What is It

The answers you made in the previous activity is an example of a type or form of
creative nonfiction.

Let us recall the definition of creative nonfiction. It is defined as a branch of

writing which employs literary techniques and artistic vision usually associated with
fiction or poetry to report on actual persons and events.

It involves writing about personal experience, real people, or events. What do you
think is an example of personal experiences? __________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________

Creative nonfiction is writing about facts rather than fiction.

What do you mean by “writing about facts rather than fiction?”

It is about fact and truth. The truth can be about a personal experience, event, or
issue in the public eye. The following is a list of the most popular types or forms of
creative nonfiction:

a) autobiography o a written account of the life of a person written by that person

b) biography o a detailed description or account of a person’s life

Lesson Ways to Present a
2 Commentary/Critique in a text
When we critique a text, we evaluate it, asking questions. Most of us tend to think of
criticism as being negative or mean, but in the academic sense, doing a critique is not
the least bit negative. Rather, it is a constructive way to better explore and understand
the material we are working with. The word’s origin means “to evaluate,” and through
our critique, we do a deep evaluation of a text.
Below are guiding tips or ways to being a better critic for non-fiction:

1. First, have at the back of your mind that the essence of the activity is to offer
constructive advice and professional opinion. So, even if it is not the finest work
you have read, ensure your contributions are invaluable and true.

2. Know and understand the target audience. This way, your assessment is
accurate. Don’t critique a children’s book and assume the readers will be adults.

3. Get a good grip of the message and how it is conveyed. Now, reflect on your
understanding of the message, have an idea how the reader will understand it,
and then be the judge of whether the message was well conveyed. Are there grey
areas? If there are, say so.

4. Look out for spelling errors, arrangement of words, ambiguous sentences, and
then point them out nicely. Before the negative criticisms begin to pour in,
however, do the positives first; generally, it is natural for one to be disposed to a
rebuke, after they have been commended for one thing or the other.

5. Do not go personal on the author. Deal with the work and not its writer. You are
entitled to your opinion of the person of the author, but it is highly unprofessional
to let this opinion come between you and the work. No personal attacks.

6. Do a follow up on the work, not necessarily with the author. Ask to know how well
the work is coming up if your contributions have been helpful and all that. This
way, you show that your criticism was genuine.

NOTE:

Your comment or critique should end with an overview of the article’s argument,
your conclusions, and your reactions.

Activity 1: “THE TESTIMONY”
The selection you are about to read is a testimonial narrative in the form of a letter and
addressed to a nongovernment organization. The letter writer narrates the abuses a big
company is committing against its own workers.

A CALL FOR ASSISTANCE

Atilla Roma

To the Kilusan para sa Pambansang Katarungan:

Peace!
I would like to bring to your attention the labor malpractice that we, the Filipino
workers of Konjata Ship-Building Company, have been experiencing for several years.
First, I would like to share with you some details on Konjata. The company in question is
engaged in ship building and ship repair, and its owned by a foreigner, Mr.K who wields
and enjoys enormous influence in Central Luzon. Because of his wealth, there is little
wonder why he has connections with some of the local politicians in the area. We would
see Governor J, Mayor S, and Representative G in the shipyard especially on special
occasions such as our big boss’ birthday celebrations. That the owner can spend
excessively on such occasions, spending cold cash for food and wine, among others,
while his workers are treated almost like slaves is beyond me.
No less than the president of the country came to Konjata to become the guest of honor
in one of the company’s anniversary celebrations. This was last year when the president
enthusiastically praised Mr.K for supposedly generating jobs for the residents of our
province (this was covered by a local media station and you can check a video recording
his speech on YouTube). The president’s presence did not create a sense of pride among
the lowly workers; instead, it sent shivers down our spine. This suggests that should we
decide to fight for our labor and human rights, we should be ready to battle a formidable
enemy, and it is for this reason that we are appealing to your organization for immediate
assistance.
I have been a worker of Konjata for six and a half years already. I was able to attend
only one semester of college, so I had a tough time applying for a job. Prior to my
employment at Konjata, I worked as a casual construction worker in different towns and
cities in the province as well as in Metro Manila, but there were times

City of Good Character 9

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
when I would have no work. Because I have a family – my wife and three children -to
support, I accepted the invitation of an acquaintance to work in the shipyard as a
welder. Not long after I was hired, I realized the difficulties of working in the shipyard.
For six years, I put up with the abuses being committed against me and my fellow
workers because I am afraid that I have nowhere else to go because of my lack of
education. I feel, however, that it is about time that we brought these abuses to public
attention.
I shall now go to the details on how our rights as workers and as human beings are
trampled on. First, we are all contractual workers although many in our ranks work
continuously in the shipyard for five years or more. Labor Code provisions require that
those who have worked continuously in a company for more than six months be
regularized – that is, they should be made permanent employees with security of tenure
and benefits.
Second, our workers receive wages that are lower than the prescribed minimum wage.
While the minimum wage is already Php 488.00 per day, the rate each Konjata worker
receives, regardless of the length of service, is only Php 395.00. Worse, we work for more
than 8 hours a day, but we do not receive anything for overtime work. We do have days
off, but we are required by Mr.K to report even on non-working holidays. As far as I
know, a worker is entitled to additional pay if he/she is told to report even on holidays.
Third, many of my workers have already met accidents in the workplace. This I ascribe
to the lack of proper safety equipment. There are times, for instance, when workers
would paint the hull of a ship without the proper harness. Just last year, six of our
workers suffered serious fractures while on duty, and three years ago, one of us had a
fatal fall. Furthermore, our workers are not even provided with face masks at least to
protect their lungs from the harmful chemicals that they are exposed to while working.
Finally, some of the workers have experienced being physically and sexually harmed by
Mr.K and the other foreigners in the shipyard. I, myself, have been slapped and kicked
by the foreigner boss in my department. As if not contented with the physical harm he
inflicts on the male workers, the same foreigner has also made sexual advances toward
one of my female co-workers.
We request for immediate assistance. Please help us end the abuses being committed
against the Filipino workers.

What I Have Learned

In this module, you have studied about presenting a commentary/critique

on a chosen creative nonfictional text. Express what you have learned by
answering the questions below.

Creative Nonfiction involves writing about personal experience, real people,

or events. It is writing about fact, rather than fiction. The writer can write about
anything, such as a personal experience, current events, or issues in the public
eye. The writer can also inject personal thoughts, feelings, or opinions into the
writing. Often, the writer uses the first person “I.”

Additional Activities

On Your Own

You are a freelance writer and blogger who wishes to join an international
blogging contest. The contest requires a creative nonfiction piece on one’s native city or
town (Example: Marikina), with not less than five paragraphs. It should revolve around
the theme: “The soil of their native land is dear to all the hearts of mankind,” a quotation
from Roman scholar and politician Cicero.

The instruction is for one to give not just the positive characteristics, but also the
unpleasant side of the place (including the writer’s painful or terrible experiences), as
well as his/her personal reflections. Pictures may also be added. Your blog is for
netizens who will choose the winning blog among the entries on the basis of creativity,
clarity, and accuracy. The final output will be a combination of the different types of
creative nonfiction that was discussed such as the personal essay, reflection essay, and
blog.

Share it online to your family members, friends, and classmates.

Since you will give some negative sides, be aware on how you will present your
commentary/critique by following the tips or ways that was discussed before.
