3.2 Drug abuse issues and student support.
The chairperson addresses the impact of drug addiction that negatively affected students at
university and neighboring schools. He initiated that they should assist students to
implement high rate of drop out that they are experiencing. In addition, he announced that
as committee they invited the owner of rehabilitation Centre to advice on overseeing this
matter.
Botha Recovery Centre helps people battling substance abuse. The centre has doctors and
social workers who help without charge. The committee appreciate the contribution the
centre is offering. Most university students who are addicts will get help and those who did
recovered from addiction will benefit from the centre. The committee really recommend the
Botha Recovery centre. Ms Oiel emphasis on how the centre helped one of his friends, who
was very affected by the substances, she ended up stealing from her own family. Since
referred to the centre she immediately received the help she needed.
The Student Support Office together with the SRC discussed on putting more effort into the
centre, and campaign at the university and neighboring school, to volunteer and doing
fundraising for the centre. They requested that they must held seminars on drug abuse for
students to attend and invite recovered addicts and Social Work who can educate, share
their experiences with the students. Health Science Department can also share how drugs
can negatively impact you physically and mentally. They further suggested to held one
seminar per term. SRC they are willing to inform parents about the centre and the support
they are offering to affect students.
They are willing to help with extra hands needed at the centre, to make this awareness
campaign a success. We must initiate few things for students to be more involve and find
the whole thing interested. Committee agreed on using a new and profitable way on
assisting Students with drug addiction issues through Botha Recovery Centre.
The chairperson suggested that they must put more effort into this matter as is going to be a
big responsibility, also considering that the centre does need a bigger facility to
accommodate more patients. This will help the community and hopefully it will prevent the
high rate of drug addiction, school dropout and crime prevention.
All members agreed and they are hopeful, they agreed that all members would drop ideas
on how to raise funds at the next meetings.
