COURSE: INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING (SENG 107)

LECTURER: Dr. HAYFORD

DUE DATE: 23rd February, 2024.

Summary of Discussions with The Biomedical Engineering Team.
On February 12, 2024, Dr. Hayford and his team delivered a comprehensive
presentation on the field of Biomedical Engineering, with the aim of
providing a fundamental overview, and informative guide to help students
navigate through the biomedical engineering program. Although the
presentation seemed specific to those in the biomedical field, it contained
information that would be beneficial to students studying other engineering
disciplines. The presentation covered various aspects of Biomedical
Engineering, ranging from its multidisciplinary nature to its applications in
solving problems in biology, medicine, and other areas.
Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles to solve
biological and medical problems to improve healthcare. Outlined in the
presentation were several specific fields of expertise a biomedical engineer
can venture into. These are Rehabilitation Engineering, Tissue Engineering,
Bio-materials, Bio-informatics, Bio-instrumentation, Medical Imaging,
Diagnostics, and Pharmaceutical Engineering.
Below is a brief explanation of some of these fields.
. Diagnostics: Involves identifying diseases and medical conditions
through patient data analysis, encompassing clinical and imaging
diagnostics.
. Bio-informatics: Application of computational techniques to analyze
biological data.
. Rehabilitation Engineering: Applies engineering principles and
technology to improve the quality of life and independence of
individuals with certain disabilities.
. Bio-materials: Designing artificial materials to interact with biological
systems for medical purposes.
. Tissue Engineering: Combines principles of engineering, biology, and
materials science to regenerate, repair, and replace damaged or lost
tissues.
. Bio-instrumentation: Development and application of instruments and
devices for measuring, monitoring, and analyzing biological signals and
phenomena.

The team then discussed the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into
Biomedical Engineering and its significance, highlighting that it can be
implemented to enhance almost every aspect of biomedical engineering
such as its applications in biomechanics, drug discovery, bio-
instrumentation, medical imaging, rehabilitation, and diagnostics.

Furthermore, Dr. Hayford emphasized various career paths in Biomedical

Engineering, including roles such as Biomedical Engineer, Clinical
Engineer, Rehabilitation Engineer, Research Engineer, Biomedical
Researcher, Physician, Consultant, and Software Engineer.

Lastly, he cautioned against pursuing the field solely for financial gain,
stressing the importance of passion and interest due to the demanding
nature of the program. He also advised us to form study groups to
enhance studying performance and reduce stress.

In conclusion, the presentation delivered by Dr. Hayford and his team

provided a comprehensive understanding of Biomedical Engineering, its
diverse applications, and the mindset required for success in the field.
The insights shared by Dr. Hayford and his team underscored the essence
of Biomedical Engineering as a catalyst for transformative change in
healthcare.
