Reading is an essential skill that is closely connected to other skills like writing,
speaking, and listening. To improve their learning outcomes, students need to read a
lot and understand what they read. Reading comprehension can also boost vocabulary
and writing skills. According to Nuttall (2018), there are four aspects of reading
comprehension that students should master - determining the main idea, finding
specific information (scanning), making inferences, and understanding the meaning of
words or detailed information. These aspects are often challenging for students to
comprehend. Grabe & Stoller (2013) suggest that reading can be taught as a way to
extract information from text and interpret it. This means that reading is a gateway to
gaining knowledge in the educational process. Students who enjoy reading and spend
a lot of time reading also tend to write well. By reading, students can improve their
vocabulary and writing skills. On the other hand, students with poor reading abilities
will struggle with their academic progress and may feel embarrassed in their school
environment. A good teacher should have a command of grammar and vocabulary to
help students develop their reading abilities and understand the reading material. A
storybook is a book with colorful pictures that support a story, which encourages
students to understand literature through imagination. According to Chavarro (2012),
a storybook is a colorful picture story that helps students comprehend the literature by
imagining the images. Heinsbergen (2013) identified four benefits of storytelling for
students' reading skills - building vocabulary, inspiring visual thinking, increasing
engagement, and providing enjoyment. Thus, a storybook is a book intended for
children that contains colorful pictures to help students comprehend the story better.
The primary objective of this research is to help Grade 7 learners at Tabon Integrated
School improve their reading comprehension by using Picture Story Books.
