Questioned Document

This document contains instructions for four activities related to analyzing handwriting characteristics and identifying disguised writing. The objectives are to: 1. Create standard and disguised handwriting samples and compare them to determine common authorship. 2. Identify handwriting characteristics like slant, letter formation, connections between letters. 3. Analyze how writing implements and paper types can impact handwriting analysis. Students will write three short passages - one in normal handwriting, one attempting to disguise their handwriting, and one personal note. They will then try to match samples to identify common authors and look for similarities and differences between standard and disguised writing. The goal is to understand how document examiners analyze

II. The Case:

Various documents were found at the crime scene strewn inside and outside the
victim’s vehicle. It was determined that a majority of these documents were betting slips.
Other documents contained handwriting not consistent with Fred’s writing style. The crime
lab is analyzing the documents to determine where the betting slips may have come from and

identify handwriting characteristics and match documents to a specific writer.

III.Materials:

The following materials will be needed:

 Three different writing utensils (pens, markers, pencils, crayons, etc.)
 Disguised writing activity worksheet

IV. Procedure:

2. Obtain all the necessary materials from your teacher.
3. When instructed, use white copy paper and one writing utensil to write the text your
teacher will dictate to you using your normal handwriting.
4. After the dictation is complete, flip over and set aside that document and grab the second

placed on separate tables. When instructed, go pick up one of the dictated texts written in
normal handwriting for your group. Make sure you do not grab your own.
7. Try to match the handwriting on the standard you chose to one of the dis-guised writing
documents and one of the notes for your group.
8. When you have found matches, answer the questions on the following page.

V. Questions:
