1. Persons are gifts from God to us. That come all
wrapped so differently. Some so loosely, others
so tightly but wrappings are not the gifts…
2. I am a gift from God to me. Do I accept the gift
I see? I am a person and for this reason A
wonderful gift of love…
3. Am I a gift to others too? Willingly given to you
and you. We all are persons, we all are gifts,
So lets have a grand exchange of gifts.
How is intersubjectivity
express in the song?
Why intersubjectivity? What is its essence?
A good way to think about intersubjectivity is to
imagine how you relate to your family and friends.
Maybe your mother enjoyed playing tennis. She took
you with her when she practiced, and you always had a
good time. Growing up, you decided to join the school
tennis team. If your mother had not played tennis with
you growing up, you may not have grown to like the
sport.
Your experience with tennis can be
called intersubjective because it was influenced by
another person (your mother).
In order to better understand intersubjectivity, we
first need to define a subject and an object.
A subject is the person experiencing an action or event.
An object is what is being experienced.
When we say something is objective, we mean that it
is factually true. When we say that something is
subjective, we mean that it is based on an opinion, or
a biased viewpoint, not on hard facts.
In literature, subjectivity means that the story is told
from a biased viewpoint, whether it is told by a
character or an unnamed narrator. Everyone in the
world has their own subjective viewpoint.
Intersubjectivity means that we all influence and are
all influenced by others to some degree. The principle
of intersubjectivity can be applied to almost any
decision we make, big or small. We always have to
consider how our actions will affect others. We
ourselves are constantly affected by the actions and
words of the people around us.
➢ Who are the people that you consider
the easiest to relate with? Whom do
you find difficult to get along with?
➢ What does a meaningful relationship
mean to you?
➢ What sets people apart from each other?
Alienation –when a person ceases
to view the other as a distinct
and authentic person.
The person considers the other as
objects to satisfy ones desires /
interest
➢ What do your realizations tell you/us
about INTERSUBJECTIVITY?
❖ refers to the shared awareness and
understanding among persons.

❖ It is made possible by the

awareness of the self and the other
The notion of recognizing the self in the
other is how philosophers define inter-
personal relations.

The interaction between the self and the

other is the philosophical concept of
Intersubjectivity.
The mutual recognition of each other as
persons
The shared awareness & understanding among
persons & the interaction of the self and the
other
Which one is the “I-Thou”; “I-it” relationships?
“I- Thou” Relationship

✓ Recognizing the sacredness and spirit in each person.

✓ Treating each individual as a whole person

✓ Being with them mindfully in the present moment

✓ Accepting people as they are; allowing them to

be themselves
Martin Buber
❑ Buber’s I-thou philosophy is about the human
person as a subject , who is a being different
from things or from objects.
❑ the person experiences his wholeness in virtue
of his relation to another self.
❑ the person as subjects have direct & mutual
sharing of selves ; person-to-person, subject-to-
subject relation or acceptance, sincerity, concern,
respect dialogue and care.
POPE JOHN PAUL II
❖ Wadowice Poland
❖ 264th Pope
❖ considered as a Great
Pope, he was an architect
❖ criticized the traditional
definition of human as a
“rational animal”
❖ maintains that the
human person is the one
who exists & acts has a will
& self determination.
❖ that action reveals the nature of the human
agent. Participation explains the essence of
the human person
❖ through participation, the person is able to
fulfill oneself , is oriented toward relation &
sharing in the communal life for the common
good.
NO HUMAN BEING SHLD. BECOME AN END TO
HIMSELF / HERSELF. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO
OUR NEIGHBOR S AS WE ARE TO OUR OWN
ACTIONS” - St. Augustine of Hippo-

Definition of Disability: Federal laws
define a person with a disability as "Any
person who has a physical or mental
impairment that substantially limits
one or more major life activities; has a
record of such impairment; or is
regarded as having such an
impairment."
In general, a physical or mental impairment
includes :
➢hearing,
➢mobility and
➢ visual impairments,
➢chronic alcoholism,
➢chronic mental illness,
➢ AIDS, AIDS Related Complex,
➢ mental retardation that substantially limits one
or more major life activities.
➢Major life activities include walking, talking,
hearing, seeing, breathing, learning, performing
manual tasks, and caring for oneself.
Disability is a measurable impairment or
limitation that “interferes with a person’s
ability e.g. To walk, lift or learn.
➢ it may refer to a physical, sensory , or mental
condition
➢ the word disability has become a more
accepted word than handicapped
Handicapped is a disadvantage that result
of a disability or impairment
❖ The degree of disadvantage (the extent of the
handicap) is often dependent on the adjustment
made by both the person and the environment.
❖ Two persons may have the same disability
but not the same degree of handicapped.
❖ Negative attitude towards persons w/
disabilities (PWD) may add to their poor
academic & vocational outcomes

❖ Parents should restructure their children

w/ PWD to accommodate their
communicative and educational needs.

❖ Community sensitivity through positive &

supportive attitude.
Underprivileged Sectors of Society
Who are the underprivileged members
of society?
➢ the poor (those who don’t own any wealth)
➢ no power in society
➢ no fame / popularity
➢ no influence in society
➢ the deprived
➢ with poor health

❖ Communarization, the main principle of
intersubjectivity – is a social process where the
community of other people are seen as embedded
within the self

❖ This process initially occurs with the idea that

other individuals are extension of the self and
serve as the “alter ego” of a person’s being.

❖ The self & others are seen as a pair that shares

each others lived experiences.
The Application of Intersubjectivity To Society

❖ Intersubjectivity looks at others as embedded

within the self. This enhances the view that all
people are equal.
The Application of Intersubjectivity To Society

❖ Intersubjectivity is unbiased in effect;

1. Everyone has the power to understand
relationships and interactions within society
regardless of social and physical deficiencies

2. People who are marginalized can be seen as

significant contributors to society thru their
talents, skills and capabilities.
The following are some authentic examples
1. Stephen Hawking (cont. Relativity & Quantum Physics)
2. Oprah Winfrey (from rugs to riches)
Summary
All persons have the natural tendency to
relate with others in meaningful ways.

We must therefore strive to establish

genuine and meaningful relationships
with others.

Our relationships help us grow & develop

as persons. Our actions & interactions
also benefit other people.
Individuals strive to engage in meaningful
relationships with one another.
As persons we are driven by our shared
dignity to treat one another with RESPECT
and acceptance

Intersubjectivity refers to one’s ability to

interact with others in a reciprocal and
meaningful way.
Thank you
it’s nice to be with
