The document discusses two types of crust: continental crust and oceanic crust. Continental crust is thicker and less dense, located under continents, and primarily made of granite. Oceanic crust is thinner and more dense, located under oceans, and primarily made of basalt. It also introduces the theory of plate tectonics which provides context for understanding geological processes and Earth's formation.

Two types of crust

CRUST What is Crust?

Outer and solid part of the Earth is called CRUST and it has two
kinds.

Continental Crust
Thick and less dense
Not located under the ocean
Primary granite

Oceanic crust
Thin and more dense
Located under the ocean
Primary Basalt

PLATES what is plates?

Large pieces of the upper few hundred kilometers of the Earth that
move as a single unit as it flows above the mantle
PLATES
what is plate tectonics?
TECTONICS
Theory dealing with the dynamics of Earth’s outer shell, the lithosphere,
that revolutionized Earth’s sciences by providing uniform context for
understanding the geological process and the formation of our planet

LAYER OF THE EARTH

Crust - the thinnest layer
Mantle - a semi-fluid where density increases with depth
Outer Core - made of liquid iron
Inner Core - made up of mainly solid iron

EARTHQUAKE - VIBRATION OF THE EARTH PRODUCED BY THE RAPID RELEASE OF ENERGY

FOCUS the point where the energy is released

EPICENTER the point directly above the focus

INTENSITY degree of shaking

1.

MAGNITUDE amount of energy released

The richter scale expresses the size of the earthquake as recorded by the
seismographs

The modified mercalli scale of earthquakes intensity describes the effect of an

earthquakes on humans and the spatial vibration of these impacts

TYPES OF SEISMIC WAVES

BODY WAVE - ARE waves that travel through the Earth’s inner layer
sURFACE WAVE - ARE WAVES THAT CAN ONLY TRAVEL THROUGH THE SURFACE
LAYER

TYPES OF PRIMARY WAVE (P-WAVE)

BODY causes the ground to compress and expand
WAVES moves back and fourth in the direction of travel
they are called primary waves because they are the first wave to a
arrive at seismic recording station
can travel through solid and liquid

SECONDARY WAVE (S-WAVE)

shakes the ground in sheering or cross wise motion
moves up and down from side to side
it is called secondary waves because they always arrive after P-
WAVE
can only travel through solid materials

TYPES OF LOVE WAVE

SURFACE have a horizontal motion that moves the surface from side to side
WAVES perpendicular to the direction of the wave is travelling
out of the two surface waves, love waves move faster

RAYLEIGH WAVE
cause the ground to move in elliptical pattern
out of all the seismic waves, surface waves spreads the most giving
them long duration on seismograph recordings

1 wavelength = ( 1 crest to another crest

Frequency = Wave/Time
( trough to trough)

Waves with shorter wavelengths has

way more frequency 2.
pacific ring of fire - referred
also as circum - pacific belt is a
path along the pacific ocean
characterized by active
volcanoes and frequent
earthquakes
edges of the continents - mostly where the mountain and volcanoes
and earthquake is located
hot spot volcanoes - middle of the continent
