Course syllabus
COURSE: COMS 151: INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to definitions, functions, properties and varieties of English
language. It also teaches students on the types, forms and factors of communication. Students
will again be introduced to the various forms of non-verbal communication.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the semester, students should be conversant with the
1. Definitions, properties, functions and the difference between speech and writing.
2. Varieties of English with emphasis on the difference between British and American
English. There will also be a highlight on some variety terms.
3. Definitions, types, forms and factors of communication and the various forms of non-
verbal communication.
MODE OF DELIVERY
Every Thursday, there will be a lecture for two hours during which students will be lectured.
There will be class discussions, presentations and other interactive activities. Students are
supposed to see their Teaching Assistants for more elaboration and clarification. Absenteeism
will not be countenanced. The attendance list will be checked every week and students who
blatantly absent themselves will face the full rigor of university rules.

COURSE REQUIREMENT AND GRADING/EVALUATION


Intermittently, there could be uninformed texts. Mid-Semester and the End of Semester
Examination will attract 30% and 70% respectively, totalling to 100%.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS
Students are supposed to read the recommended books listed below and prepare their own
notes. Notes will not be dictated in class. They are enjoined to go online to search for
requisite materials pertaining to the course.
