yours, socks, wise, bust, busty, juice, day, savage, band, can, ear, heart, noun kid, aces,
love, ball, peace, kinds, wiser,
F D A Y Q W E D
B N O U N C A N
A C E S R D V A
O J I B U S T B
D K E A R E W Z
H A H G T S O K
I E S I W I E I
L L Y O U R S D
Scanning – this reading strategy’s purpose is to look for specific fact or information without reading
everything. You use your eyes rapidly from the top forward to bottom and gaze for information. For example,
if you want to search for the meaning of the word ‘rendezvous’ from a dictionary, you will turn the page
searching the letter R first, then E; by then probably you will find the word.
Purposes of Scanning
To search for a word in a dictionary or index
To find a phone number or an address in a directory
To check the time schedule of a program in an agenda
To check the price of a specific item in a catalog
To know a particular information from a text
How to Scan?
1. Use your hands – as you go through the text use your hands in focusing your attention and keeping your
place. Learning to do this is helpful in locating specific information.
4
2. Use your peripheral vision – as you use your hands, let your eyes work for you when searching
information. Keep the main words in mind while scanning.
3. Disregard unnecessary information. Don’t read every word in the text.
Skimming – a reading strategy referring to only look for general ideas. For example in reading the newspaper,
if you do not have enough time to read the whole paper you just read the headlines to know the main news of
the day. Skimming provides the overview of the text, remember when you skim you don’t read every word of
the text. You must prepare yourself to move rapidly through the pages. Pay attention to headings, bold and italic
text, indenting, bullet points and numbered lists.
Purposes of Skimming
To see what is in the news on a website or on a paper
To look through a text to decide whether you want to read it or not
To look through the television guide/program schedule to plan your evening
To see through a catalog to choose an offer
To go through the options after searching something on Google
Skimming Tips
1. Read the table of contents to identify the main ideas covered.
2. Read the topic sentence and closing sentences or paragraphs. Disregard unnecessary paragraphs.
3. Read the main headings as well as the subheadings.
4. Understand the illustrations or graphic features.
5. Don’t overload your mind with information not needed, go after your special purpose.
Close Reading – unlike the first two reading strategies which was done rapidly, this one is serious. You have to
read thoroughly and intensively to learn from a chosen reading material. It requires high comprehension
and deeper analysis - breaking down of ideas to simpler ones.
1. Use guide questions for you to better understand the text you are reading.
2. Keep yourself away from anything that might disturb you.
3. Think only of the things related to the text because other thoughts might bother you which may
result to lack of focus.
4. If you do not have a good retention ability, taking important points from the text is a big help.
5. If you still do not understand the text, read it again. Remember, it’s intensive!

Points to Ponder
Active readers use reading strategies to help save time and cover a lot of ground. Your purpose for
reading should determine which strategy or strategies to use. Skimming is reading rapidly in order to get a
general overview of the material. Scanning is reading rapidly in order to find specific facts. While skimming
tells you what general information is within a section, scanning helps you locate a specific fact. Another
strategy is close reading, when students “close read,” they focus on what the author has to say, what the author’s
purpose is, what the words mean, and what the structure of the text tells us. This approach ensures that students
really understand what they’ve read.

others.
“What a miracle! A giant squash!” Mang Kanor exclaimed. “This is the first time I saw a giant squash in my
farm.”
The farmer took the squash and brought it home.
“How big is the squash?!” uttered Aling Tikang. “Go, get a knife, open it so we can cook and taste the squash.”
“Please take care of your cutting.”
“Who is talking?”
The couple looked around but there was no one.
Again, a voice was heard.
“I am inside the squash. Don’t be afraid.”
“A devil, there is a devil inside the squash,” said the wife.
Carefully, the husband cut the squash. A very beautiful tiny lady appeared.
“I am Maria. I was punished by the King of land because of my naughty times. I can go back to my normal size
if my repentance is accepted. May I stay with you? I would like to repent here.”
“Yes, of course,” answered the couple.
“I will help you in planting. Please ponder me as your daughter. I have no place to go. I am now alone!”
The couple happily acknowledged Maria for they do not have a child.
