INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

1. Answer ALL questions using the MAPLE software. Start each answer on a new page.

1
QUESTION 1

Find

a)
(3 marks)

b) the principal value of

(3 marks)

SOLUTION

Maple Command
Explain and write a conclusion based on the results obtained from the Maple command

a)

The definition of log(z) is log(z) = ln |z| + i arg(z) and we let z=√ 5−2i
Then we obtain answer for log(z) is

2
b)

Using the formula z c =e cLn(z ) and we let z=i∧c=−1+2i . We obtain the answer
c −7
z =−1.5873 ×10 −0.0432141

QUESTION 2

Find

a) a value of such that

(6 marks)

b) some possible solutions for

(6 marks)

SOLUTION

Maple Command
Explain and write a conclusion based on the results obtained from the Maple command

a)

In this equation, identities that was implied involving the real and imaginary parts are

sinh z= sinh x cos y + i cosh x sin y. Based on the result the solution for sinh z = is
.

4
b)

Let z = x + i y, the function viewed in terms of its real and imaginary parts, where cos z = cos
(x + iy) and sin z = sin (x + iy). Elementary trigonometric identities was applied to the
function which are
1. cos z = cos x cosh y – i sin x sinh y
2. sin z = sin x cosh y – i cos x sinh y
Based on the maple output we can see that the real and imaginary parts compared into two
equation and the possible solutions for the function is as the above.
