I
Hi! My name is Phong. I’m sixteen years old and I live in Ho Chi Minh City in
Viet Nam. I live with my parents and my younger sister – she’s thirteen. I’m a
high school student in Grade 11, and English is my foreign language and I have
four lessons a week.
I’m a huge fan of Manchester City FC. I think we can have many things to
exchange because you’re a fan of Manchester City too.
I’m interested in chatting with you or your friends in English using Facebook or
Messenger. Please send me a message and tell me a little about yourself, your
family and your hobbies. I’m waiting to hear from you.
II
There are several reasons why I would like to have a penfriend in other countries.
First, writing to my penfriend allows me to feel connected and appreciated. I think
having a penfriend is a good way to keep in touch with peers around the world.
Next, chatting with my pen pal allows me to understand areas of the world other
than my own. We can’t travel all over the world during our lives. Then, writing
with someone who share my interests is very interesting. It can open me up to new
ideas and make me motivated to go to my next projects. Finally, my penfriend can
make me feel more confident. They can realise my strength and give me pieces of
advice.

Last Sunday morning, we organised an introductory meeting of the English Club
in our school this schoolyear. The event took place at the school auditorium from
8 o’clock in the morning with over 40 members.
An English Club is a place for students to use English in a casual setting. We get a
chance to practise many different skills in a setting that is more like real life. In
addition, we feel more comfortable using English with friendly students from
other classes and we’ll certainly have a lot of fun.
At the first meeting, members learned each other’s names and discussed the way
to organise the club. We organised the club by voting and choosing the boards of
leaders, putting in the agenda the themes (music, travel, food …) and skills

Baøi taäp Tieáng Anh 11 (khoâng ñaùp aùn) -- 399

(reading, writing, listening …). At the meeting, we also discussed the rules and
routines the club should have. For example, our English Club would have an
‘English only’ rule, what about bringing a friend, conducting each club meeting in
a similar way …
In my view, the day was a great success. Everyone seemed to have a good time.
We will post the agenda of the coming meeting on the library bulletin board with
the email address at the top so that our school friends can email us with any ideas
they might have. We may even want to find a fluent English speaker who will
volunteer to come to our meetings.

To stay healthy, children should do at least 60 minutes of exercise or activities
daily. There has been a decline of physical activity among teenagers and now only
20% of children in our country are meeting the recommendations.
We should change the way children use screen time because many children have
become addicted to computers, tablets and mobile phones. We can encourage
children to use their gadgets and apps in a positive way, and use trackers to limit
the time spent on the screen.
Support and encouragement from family members is a really important factor in
increasing children’s activity levels. In other words, family members should set a
good example of how to live an active life for children.
Getting outdoors can be a great way to get children to see the benefits of being fit
and healthy. This can include visits to green spaces, parks, playgrounds, walks
and cycle tracks as part of your everyday family life. Families can also find ways
to be active indoors, including dancing and active video games.
To conclude, a few changes to daily routines can make all the difference. Small
changes can have / make a big impact on children’s health and well-being.
III
Many students tend to combine their studies with sport activities. However, does
playing sports deter students from studying, or on the opposite help them aim
higher and achieve more at school?
Sports teach students never to give up and keep on moving forwards, and most
students carry on this attitude to their school lives. Believing in yourself and doing
everything possible to achieve goals in sports also helps students build their self-
confidence to go through school well. For example, some students with poor
performance at school who can play sports well start showing some positive
results in their studies.
Doing sports at school regularly can take a lot of time. Therefore, a busy schedule
may leave little time for them to study and do well at school. However, good
organizational and time management skills can help students combine their sports
with studying without affecting any area.
IV
‘Are Extracurricular Activities a Distraction from School Work?’
Most students who participate in extracurricular activities at school consider
school clubs and their activities fun and interesting. However, a lot of the
activities can take up time after school.
406 - Löu Hoaèng Trí
Many parents hope their children are involved in academic activities as much as
they can, and some believe extracurricular activities will be a distraction for their
children from schoolwork and other tasks at home.
I think the matter really depends on the type of school club they choose and how
they spend their time on these activities. Many people believe it is important for
their children to become a well-rounded person who has good academic grades
and involvement in one or two sports. If one divides their time wisely, the sports
may not be a distraction. Most clubs take up less time than joining a sports team.
Moreover, universities prefer students with involvement in activities outside of
just academics.
To conclude, if students have good time management, participation in clubs or
sports won’t become difficult. They are more likely to succeed in both
academically and physically to become a well-round individual.

Dear Mai,
You will be happy to know that we have purchased a new house in the suburb of
the city. The place is very calm and quiet. The roads are quite wide and spacious.
The house itself is located on a nice plot of land. It is a corner plot and opens on
three sides.
It is a double-story house. There are three rooms in the front and three in the rear
of the house. All the rooms are airy and well-ventilated. The living room is the
largest room, and we have tried to decorate it beautifully. But I think it needs
many more things to add to its beauty. The kitchen is also a big space with all
facilities for cooking and cleaning. It has a small dining table for quick ready
dining and all the gadgets required for a good cooking place.
We are happy to have some good neighbours. All of them are very friendly; they
have helped my family so much since we moved here.
Now I invite you and your parents to have a visit to our new house and stay with
us for a few days. I hope you will soon plan to come.
Best wishes
Laura

How to Improve Your House in the New Year
You can begin to make a fresh start in the new year by adding a fresh coat of paint
to the walls. It is not only one of the easiest ways to improve your house, but it is
also a great way to make your house seem bigger and brighter.
Cleaning the windows also makes your house sparkle and shine. You can spray
the windows with a vinegar and water mixture or a window cleaning product.
Then wipe the windows with a clean paper towel.
In order to save on energy bills in the new year, you should replace the lights with

414 - Löu Hoaèng Trí

LED light bulbs to save energy and money. You should also check any air leaks in
every room for better air conditioning, and not wasting energy.

How Social Media Helps Students Study
Many people think that we learn best when we interact with people, so we can use
social media in studying. Social media can help you in many ways if you use it
wisely.
422 - Löu Hoaèng Trí
When we have projects, social media allows us to make communication more
efficient. We can build a community where everyone contributes with their piece
of knowledge.
Social media is a good means of sharing. You can share links to resources,
experiences, or even your problems.
You can use social media to find additional content that will reinforce what you
have learned in class. You also get opinions, ideas and assistance from YouTube
videos or other social media channels.
To conclude, there are also some drawbacks of using social media. Being
responsible students, we will take full advantage of the resources that the media
offer us. Using social media well and having meaningful connections will help us
get through our education successfully.

III
Graduating from high school, the young often wonder whether they ought to keep
on studying further or not. Many people suppose that continuing to study at
university or college can be the best way to guarantee their successful career,
whereas others believe working right after school is much better.
Working straight after graduation is beneficial in some ways. Firstly, young
people are able to earn money as soon as possible. When they finish high school,
they will be mature enough to live independently on their own income. It is
common sense that having a job can prove one’s maturity. Secondly, a person
who chooses to get a job instead of studying higher is likely to progress rapidly in
their career. This may bring about a good chance to obtain a lot of real experience
and skills for their chosen profession.
On the other hand, there are a variety of reasons why people have a tendency to
choose to continue education after high school. First, a college education will
provide young people with more qualifications, which is what most employers
expect these days. University graduates will probably get a much higher salary
than those without university education. Furthermore, the job market is becoming
more and more competitive. In fact, people would be well-advised to get a degree,
as hundreds of applicants often chase the top jobs. It is an obvious advantage for
university graduates. For example, graduate engineers in Vietnam are highly paid
and find it easy to get a top job.
In conclusion, it seems evident that both working right after school and choosing
to continue higher study are advantageous in their own ways.
IV
Nowadays, it is popular to go to colleges and universities abroad, which is a highly
controversial issue among students and their parents. There is no doubt that choosing
to study abroad is extremely beneficial and its advantages might outweigh its
drawbacks. On the other hand, there are also a plenty of drawbacks of choosing to
study overseas.
There are several advantages of studying abroad. Firstly, being abroad can offer
students higher skills, qualifications in the field, and the expansion of social and
professional networks. Therefore, students can get job offers more easily when they
have an international background and a network of social connections. Secondly,
students become more familiar with the new cultures, which is crucial in the modern
global world. For example, when students come to England, they can get familiar
with the English history, weather, cuisine and lifestyles, which would be an exciting
experience.

Baøi taäp Tieáng Anh 11 (khoâng ñaùp aùn) -- 431

On the other hand, studying abroad may bring about some difficulties, which can be
harmful and destructive. One problem is the cost of going abroad to study can be too
high for the average citizen. For instance, in some countries, accommodation and
tuition fee may be as high as the minimum salary of that country. Another drawback
is that students may experience culture shock and adaptation issues, which is quite
common among newbies. The culture and the lifestyles of the country where they
study may be different from their own culture.
In conclusion, while studying abroad may bring some disadvantages in terms of high
costs of education and culture shock, it proves to be beneficial for most students
because it enables students to become more familiar with new cultures and expand
the social and professional networks.

One of my favorite books is 3The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a novel
written by Mark Twain. Published in 1884, it’s set around 1840 in various
locations along the Mississippi River. The novel is written in the first person.
Although it’s a kind of adventure story, it follows 1the moral development of
young man surviving difficult circumstances.
The main character is the narrator, 2Huckleberry Finn. He’s a wild teenager from
an impoverished family that has abandoned him. He is adopted by a widow,
who does her best to turn Huckleberry into a respectable citizen. Although the
hero of the novel finds his new lifestyle unbearable, he puts up with it.
There is a turning point 2when Huckleberry’s aggressive father takes him away
from his new home. Huckleberry manages to escape from his father and sets
off on a journey of exploration down the Mississippi River. On his travels he
meets Jim, a man escaping from slavery. They share a lot of incredible
adventures and Huckleberry starts questioning the values of a society that
treats fellow human beings as inferior.

440 - Löu Hoaèng Trí

All in all, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is 4an appealing story. And
although it is full of light-hearted moments and gripping action, the author also
uses the novel as a vehicle to expose the stupidity of prejudice. This makes it 4an
entertaining and thought-provoking story that I would thoroughly recommend
to anyone who is a fan of the classics.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a Disney cartoon film. It is directed by Gary
Trousdale and Kirk Wise. The main character is a scientist named Milo Thatch.
Milo’s voice is played by Michael J. Fox.
A rich man gives Milo a submarine and a team of people to help him find the Lost
Empire of Atlantis. After some exciting adventures, Milo and his team find
Atlantis. But Atlantis is in trouble. Milo has to save it.
The music in this film is amazing and some of the characters are very funny. The
film is sometimes scary, but it is very exciting.
If you like action films and cartoons, you will love Atlantis: The Lost Empire. It’s
a fantastic film.
V
I have recently watched a film called Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass. It is
based on Nguyen Nhat Anh’s best-seller in the same title.
The main characters are the two brothers: Thieu, a 12-year-old boy, and his little
brother, Tuong, a 7-year-old boy. The plot is about the memories of the poor
childhood. The brothers do everything together: playing in rice paddles, playing

Baøi taäp Tieáng Anh 11 (khoâng ñaùp aùn) -- 441

games, etc. Their days are filled with curious adventures. Then one day, Man,
Thieu’s classmate comes to stay at their house for a while because her house is on
fire. Because of jealousy, Thieu does physical harm to Tuong, so Tuong can’t
stand up. In order to meet his classmate, Nhi, Tuong tries to walk again, and one
day he runs to find Nhi.
I particularly enjoy the characters and the theme of friendship. Many of the scenes
are memorable because they are filmed in the beautiful countryside of Phu Yen
Province.
All in all, I really enjoyed the film. I’d like to recommend this film to everyone
because I think all of us want to recall our childhood.
