I. Introduction

Social anxiety is also known as social phobia, it is an anxiety disorder causing

considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some part of daily life. Otherwise

it defines as the fear of social situations that involve interaction with other people. It is fear of

being judge and evaluated negatively by other people or behaving in other way that might cause

embarrassment.

As set out in the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) (World

Health Organization, 1992) and in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th

Edition Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) social anxiety

disorder is a persistent fear of one or more social situations where embarrassment may occur

and the fear or anxiety is out of proportion to the actual threat posed by the social situation as

determined by the person's cultural norms.

II. Statement of the Problem

The purpose if this research is to investigate the average age of individuals who are

experiencing social anxiety.

The following are some questions that supports the topic of the research:

1. What is Social Anxiety?

2. How often individuals experience social anxiety?

3. What is the average age of individuals who are experiencing social anxiety.
III. Review of Related Literature and Related Studies

Local Literature

Anxiety was one of the most studied phenomena among western researchers. The primary

focus of the study was to determine the mediating effect of anxiety to the underlying link

between stress and aggression, A mediation analysis research design were employed to

understand a known relationship by exploring the underlying mechanism or process by which

the independent variable (X) influences the dependent variable (Y) .The technique used is

stratified sampling technique in selecting respondents. Stratified sampling involves the division

of a population into smaller groups known as strata. The respondents in the study were the

children currently engaged in formal education in the primary level, specifically ranging from

nine (9) years of age to twelve (12) years of age. The researchers preferred to use school-age

children for the gathering of data. Researchers also conclude that anxiety and aggression has

no significant effect. Children who experience anxiousness do not exhibit aggressive behavior

towards others. Thus, as there were increases in anxiety level, aggression level of individuals

remain stable; sometimes total absence of aggressive pattern in children could be manifested.

Local Studies

The study determined the respondents’ profile, the level assessment of social anxiety

disorder of the respondents and if there are significant differences in the level assessment of

social anxiety disorder when grouped according to their profile. The respondents of the study

were 306 college freshmen out of 1290 total population at the age of 17 and 27 years.

Majority of the respondents were taking Bachelor of Industrial Technology, went to public

schools for their secondary education and were living with their parents. As a whole, they have

marked social anxiety disorder (SAD), males have moderate SAD while females showed a

marked social anxiety disorder. Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Engineering and
Bachelor of Industrial Technology courses have moderate social anxiety disorder while

Education and Business courses have marked social anxiety disorder. Respondents from public

secondary schools exhibited marked social anxiety disorder while those from private schools

have moderate social anxiety disorder. Respondents regardless of their living conditions have

marked social anxiety disorder. Keywords - Risk level assessment, Social Anxiety Disorder, first

year college students, Philippines. (Reyes, Annie & Reyes, Braulio. (2015). Social Anxiety

Disorder of First Year University Students. IAMURE International Journal of Multidisciplinary

Research. 10. 10.7718/iamure.v10i1.867.)

Foreign Literature

By age 13, the prevalence of SAD increases with a greater number of girls than boys

reporting SAD (Canino et al., 2004; Costello et al., 2003; Essau, Conradt & Petermann, 2000).

Furmark (2002) has reported a female: male prevalence of 3:2. According to Essau et al.

(1999), sex differences are usually limited to situations that involve interacting with other people.

Most boys and girls are found to have an increased fear of speaking or performing in front of

others, but this was more common in females than in males (Essau et al., 1999). Similar

findings were obtained by Sumter et al. (2009), however Wittchen et al. (1999) found that

females had higher rates on all the measures in situations concerning social fear. Social fear is

said to be linked to self-consciousness, which can result in girls worrying about their physical

appearance, as well as about speaking or performing when surrounded by others. There is

however a lack of theoretical models explaining sex differences, although some are beginning to

51 emerge and these include internalizing disorders (Zahn-Waxler, Shirtcliff & Marceau, 2008).

Foreign Studies

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common mental disorder, it is often under diagnosed and

under treated. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence, severity, disability, and quality
of life towards SAD among students of Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study

was conducted among a stratified sample of 500 undergraduate students to identify the

prevalence of SAD, its correlates, related disability, and its impact on the quality life. All

participants completed the Social Phobia Inventory, Leibowitz Social Anxiety Scale, Sheehan

Disability Scale, and the WHO Quality of Life – BREF questionnaire. Of 476 students, 25.8%

were screened positive for SAD. About 47.2% of the students had mild symptoms, 42.3% had

moderate to marked symptoms, and 10.5% had severe to very severe symptoms of SAD.

Students who resulted positive for SAD reported significant disabilities in work, social, and

family areas, and this has adversely affected their quality of life as compared to those who

screened negative for SAD. Students reported several clinical manifestations that affected their

functioning and social life. Acting, performing or giving a talk in front of an audience was the

most commonly feared situation. Blushing in front of people was the most commonly avoided

situation. Since the present study showed a marked prevalence of SAD among students,

increased disability, and impaired quality of life, rigorous efforts are needed for early recognition

and treatment of SAD.

V. Research Design

The researcher will use Sample Size as the research design. The researchers find it

applicable because it helps researchers to generate and collect data. Prior to this study, it is

also based on human experiences because teens nowadays are experiencing social anxiety. By

using this design, we will be ask about how many subjects should we study? We can approach

this crucial issue via statistical approach.
