Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Beans are a significant crop in the Philippines, providing a

vital `source of protein for the local population and

contributing to the country's agricultural industry. The primary

types of beans grown in the Philippines include mung beans, black

eyed peas, kidney beans, lentils, and lima beans, among others.

Beans are cultivated in various regions of the Philippines,

with some of the significant producing areas including the

Cagayan Valley, Ilocos region, Central Luzon, and Bicol region.

These regions have conducive climate conditions and fertile

soils, which are ideal for growing high-quality beans.

Moreover, the production of beans in the Philippines

contributes to the country's economic growth and development. The

local bean industry provides employment opportunities for

farmers, traders, and processors, among others, making it a

significant source of livelihood for many Filipinos.

On the nutrition front, beans are superstars. Beans play a

crucial role in the Filipino diet, with various traditional

dishes and snacks featuring them as a primary ingredient.

Examples of these include "monggo guisado," which is a popular

stew made from mung beans, and "hopia," a sweet pastry made from

beans, among others.

2
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

In fact, research has shown consumption of beans helps stave

off obesity by providing a lower fat content than animal protein

and improving satiety. Because beans are low on the glycemic

index and have slowly digestible starches, beans can assist

diabetics in controlling blood sugar levels. Beans are incredibly

high in dietary fiber, with fiber content ranging from 7% to 25%,

depending on the bean. They also pack a hefty protein punch at

20% to 30%, based on the bean you choose. In addition, beans are

high in lysine, folate, thiamine, antioxidants, and other

phytochemicals, and contain riboflavin and niacin, potassium,

calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc.

Sheller machines are agricultural machines designed to

automate the shelling process of various crops such as beans,

maize, and rice, among others. These machines aim to improve the

efficiency and productivity of the shelling process, reducing the

time and labor required to complete the task.

The use of sheller machines has become increasingly popular

in the agricultural industry due to their ability to increase

production and reduce post-harvest losses. With the advancement

of technology, there have been significant improvements in the

design and functionality of sheller machines, making them more

efficient, durable, and easy to operate.

3
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the

development of portable and low-cost sheller machines that can be

used by small-scale farmers and processors. These machines are

designed to be easy to maintain, operate, and transport, allowing

farmers to use them in the field or small-scale processing

centers.

Efficient and effective sheller machines have significant

benefits for the agricultural industry, including increased

productivity, reduced labor costs, and minimized post-harvest

losses. In addition, they can contribute to the growth and

development of the agricultural sector, providing employment

opportunities for farmers, processors, and machine manufacturers.

Beans are shelled after harvest in order to separate the

grains from the pods. The traditional way of separating beans

from pods is through manual labor, which involves the use of

hands or simple tools such as sticks or wooden rollers. In this

method, the pods are first harvested and left to dry for a period

before being threshed to separate the beans from the pods.

Threshing can be done by beating the dried pods with sticks or

using wooden rollers to crush them. The beans are then separated

from the pod debris manually by handpicking or winnowing, which

involves tossing the mixture of beans and pod debris into the air

to allow the wind to blow away the lighter pod debris, leaving
4
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

the heavier beans behind. This manual method of separating beans

from pods can be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and

inefficient, which is why there has been an increasing interest

in developing mechanical methods such as bean sheller machines to

automate the process and make it more efficient.

The idea for and creation of this machine sprang from the

requirement to lessen the strain and time involved in the manual

way of processing or "shelling beans”. The manual method of

processing beans comes with a lot of issues. These include

breaking the beans when shelling them and introducing extraneous

substances like stones and filth. Since the bean pods won't be

threshed on a bare floor when a motorized beans Sheller is

employed, they can be avoided.

Agricultural engineers from USDA (2017) created an

experimental Sheller that gently handles Beans while shelling

them. Beans with a 15% moisture content were successfully shelled

in laboratory experiments with this technology, with no obvious

damage to the kernels. The poor capacity of the Sheller, the low

belt durability, and the decline in shelling effectiveness at

high moisture levels are the system's three main flaws. Fox

created a new experimental Sheller based on the rolling and

compressing technique. However, it was said that the rubber

roller Sheller had feeding issues and did a poor job of shelling
5
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

unhusked ears. The rubber roller Sheller's shelling capability

was not disclosed by Fox.

When comparing the effectiveness of mechanical and

traditional techniques of deseeding, Hiregoudar and Udhayakumar

(2017) found that the mechanical deseeder produced the most

production (16.07 kg/h) while causing more mechanical damage to

the pulp and seed (2.31 kg/h). It was noted from previously

evaluated research that the majority of the earlier produced

shelling machines were either not particularly efficient or

viable enough to be commercialized. This research focuses on the

design and development of a commercially viable, locally

manufactured bean shelling equipment.

According to Adewunmi (2000), separating seed from its pod

are being done manually particularly in some rural areas of

developing countries. Obena and Del Rosario (2008) also added

that in their analysis of beans production, the most tedious part

is the shelling and the cleaning of dried pods. This process

requires manual process like hand pressing, crushing or beating.

And since this process requires a lot of human effort, this

causes extreme fatigue to producers and harvesters of beans. Not

only that, the manual process for beans has led to lower quality

of production.
6
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

According to NSRL (2010), the careless shelling can also

reduce the quality of the products and foster subsequent losses

form the action of insects and post-harvest diseases. Production

for beans deals with much higher challenge especially for small

scale business making such. Bean shelling machines has recently

gained significance however, most of the commercially-available

shelling machines are imported and also expensive.

The problem that this paper wants to tackle is how to lessen

the inefficiency and production cost brought about during

production using the traditional procedure. In pursuing the

solution for the manual process of shelling beans, the

researchers aim to provide an enhanced design and concept for a

more synchronized shelling of beans to provide innovative support

to small scale farmers in Cagayan valley in a much affordable

execution.

In response to this challenge, this research aims to develop

a portable and efficient beans sheller that can improve the

shelling process of beans in Cagayan Valley. The objective is to

design a device that can be easily transported and operated,

allowing farmers to shell beans quickly and efficiently in the

field.

This study will involve a thorough exploration of the

existing technologies and methods of beans shelling, as well as

7
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

an investigation of the specific needs and requirements of local

farmers and bean producers. By identifying the challenges and

limitations of traditional shelling methods, this research seeks

to develop a solution that can significantly improve the

productivity and profitability of the agriculture industry in

Cagayan Valley. The threat of the bean shelling machine to

overheat on a longer time of production is still to be

considered. Finally, all the major parts are expected to be

economical compared to the imported bean shelling machine since

the machine will be fabricated in the Philippines and the

functions of the machine is better. This will limit the ability

of the modernized bean shelling machine compared to the present

bean shelling machine used.

Background Information

Cagayan Valley, located in the northern part of the

Philippines, is a significant producer of beans, contributing

significantly to the country's agricultural industry. However,

the traditional method of shelling beans in this region is labor-

intensive and time-consuming, resulting in inefficiencies in the

shelling process. Taken to a next step in innovation, researchers

are conducting several researches in order to identify the root

solution to the difficulty in shelling and separating operation.

Statement of the Problem

For a long time, Bean Shelling has been a time-consuming,

tedious (by using energy in all processes to get beans), and

mind-cracking process, especially for many small-scale formers in

the country

Shelling takes a lot of time even with some hand-operated

simple tools. It is labor intensive and time-consuming work.

The existing machine is too large and costly to acquire for

small-scale farmers. A beans sheller will reduce processing time

and cost while improving ergonomics for small-scale farmers.

The design considers increasing the efficiency of the

method used to remove beans from the pod, reducing safety risk,

improving separation rate, and quality control, and decreasing

loss of the losses. This led to the design and fabrication of

beans Sheller which will save time and increase the efficiency of

the process.

Objective

The primary objective of this research is to design,

develop, and evaluate a cost-effective and efficient beans

sheller machine.
10
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

The study aims to investigate various fabrication

techniques, materials, and mechanisms to optimize the

performance, durability, and affordability of the machine.

Additionally, the research seeks to assess the machine's

functionality in terms of shelling capacity, speed, energy

efficiency, and user-friendliness.

Through experimental testing and analysis, the goal is to

provide insights into the feasibility and practicality of

implementing the fabricated beans sheller machine in agricultural

settings, ultimately addressing the challenges associated with

traditional shelling methods and enhancing productivity in bean

processing industries.

Assumption/Hypothesis

The Fabrication of Beans Sheller Machine represents a

significant advancement in bean processing technology, offering

an unprecedented level of speed and efficiency that is expected

to surpass existing shelling machines. With its innovative design

and potential to improve productivity and profitability for

farmers and processors, this sheller has the potential to

transform the industry and enhance sustainable economic

development.

Scope and Delimitations

This study focuses on the development of a beans sheller

machine that is designed for use with mungo beans, black-eyed

peas, kidney beans, lentils, and lima beans, which are the only

available types of beans in the region. Our scope is limited to

these beans due to their regional availability and importance in

the local economy. The researchers were suggested to attempt

shelling peanut on the machine as a potential avenue for future

development, but this is not a primary focus of the study.

Should be considered. Firstly, the project will not cover

the production or cultivation of beans, as this falls outside the

scope of the project. Secondly, the project will not include an

analysis of the regulatory environment or market demand for beans

shellers in the Cagayan Valley region. Thirdly, the testing and

evaluation of the prototype will be conducted on a limited scale

and may not reflect the performance of the machine in all local

conditions and situations. Finally, the study will not address

other aspects of the research project on the Beans Sheller

Machine has several delimitations that bean production or

marketing, and will not provide a comprehensive evaluation of the

entire bean production system. These delimitations suggest that

the research project will have a narrower focus, and may not

provide a comprehensive overview of the entire bean production

and processing industry.

12
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

These scope and delimitation statements help to clarify the

specific focus and limitations of the research project. They

define the boundaries of the study and help to ensure that the

research objectives are achievable within the given constraints.

It's important to clearly state the scope and delimitations in a

research project to avoid confusion and ensure that the study is

conducted in a focused and efficient manner.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

After a thorough and in-depth search by the researchers,

this chapter covers the related literature and studies. It also

provides a summary of the art to fully comprehend the research

for a better understanding of the study.

A. S. Waghmode et al. (2020), which focused on the

development of a power-operated pea sheller. The machine operates

on the principle of friction generated by the rubbing of pea pods

between two rollers and is made from low-cost materials available

in the market. In their testing, the researchers found that a

roller speed of 50 rpm and a clearance between the two rollers of

2-3 mm, with blanched peas at a temperature of 98°C for 1.5

minutes, was best suited for depoding of peas from pods.

Meanwhile, for unbalanced peas, a roller speed of 1200 rpm and a

gap between the two rollers of 3-4 mm, with an average throughput

capacity of 69 kg/h, was the best configuration. The shelled bean

weight for blanched peas was 72 kg/h (67.8 kg whole bean & 4.002

kg damaged pea beans), with a shelling efficiency of about 95.8%.

However, for unblanched peas, the shelled bean weight was 69 kg/h

(64.9 kg whole pea beans & 6.64 kg damaged), with a shelling

efficiency of 90%.
16
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

The researchers plan to further optimize machine parameters,

such as peripheral speed of rollers, for blanched and unbalanced

peas to improve efficiency. The researchers found this study

interesting as it provides insight into the development of a

machine that can shell beans quickly and efficiently.

H. Mugabi (2019), the study Design and construction of a

motorized bean thresher-cum winnower it was stated that Cotton

bean is an important crop in Uganda due to its nutritional value,

but post-harvest losses are high due to traditional threshing

methods. The project aims to design, construct, test, and

evaluate an affordable and efficient bean thresher-cum-winnower

to improve production and productivity for medium-scale farmers.

The design process involved analyzing forces, selecting

appropriate materials, and creating engineering drawings before

constructing the machine parts.

A fully functional prototype resulted after all the above

operations yielded results of optimum machine performance. At a

feed rate of 0.06Kg/s, the prototype achieved a threshing and

cleaning efficiency of 79.9% and 57.8% respectively, with seed

damages of 8.3% and a machine output of 101kg/hr of bean seeds.

However, it was found out that the threshing and cleaning

efficiencies decreased with an increase in feed rate from 79.9%

to 78.6% and 57.8% to 56.5% respectively. Mechanical seed damages

17
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

also decreased with an increase in feeding rate from 8.3% to

7.5%.

The cleaning efficiency was low because the testing of the

prototype was done using beans of small properties compared to

design specifications. This was due to the difficulty of

obtaining beans of large sizes (NABE4, K132, NABE3) yet the

concave sieve hole diameter was big. This compromised the blower

efficiency because it allowed heavy chaffs to pass through the

sieve, which the blower couldn't handle. To maximize the cleaning

efficiency of the blower, the sieve hole diameter should be

reduced, and appropriate conclusions should be drawn. The machine

has a total cost of 2,536,650 UGX, which includes all taxes, the

cost of materials, machinery, and hired labor to construct the

machine, as well as overhead costs.

Overall, the study shows that the designed bean thresher-

cum-winnower prototype has the potential to improve production

and productivity for medium-scale farmers in Uganda by reducing

post-harvest losses caused by traditional threshing methods.

However, further modifications and improvements are needed to

optimize the cleaning efficiency of the blower, such as reducing

the sieve hole diameter to prevent heavy chaffs from passing

through the sieve.

18
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

Karthickumar et al. (2017) created a deseeder and assessed

it. The machine, which had a capacity of 75 kg/h-1, included a

mechanism for separating seeds as well as separate exits for

seeds and deseeded fruits. Experimental evaluation was carried

out under various operating circumstances, such as various wooden

roller speeds, feed rates, and horizontal clearance. Results

indicate that as compared to a manually operated machine, the

machine has a maximum deseeding efficiency of 89.15%, which

results in time and cost savings of 93.34% and 74.9%,

respectively.

Synthesis

Various design factors influence the efficiency and

effectiveness of beans sheller machines, including the type of

beans being processed (e.g., soybeans, black beans), throughput

requirements, power source (manual, electric, or mechanical),

size, weight, and portability. Designs often aim to maximize

shelling efficiency while minimizing damage to the beans and

reducing processing time. Fabrication methods vary widely

depending on factors such as available resources, budget,

expertise, and desired outcomes. Common fabrication techniques

include welding, machining, and using off-the-shelf components.

Modular designs and interchangeable parts can enhance flexibility

and ease of maintenance. Performance metrics for beans sheller

19
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

machines typically include shelling efficiency (percentage of

beans successfully shelled), processing speed (beans shelled per

unit time), damage to beans (broken or split beans), and energy

consumption. Evaluation methods range from laboratory testing to

field trials, with some studies incorporating user feedback and

real-world performance data.

Recent innovations in beans sheller machine fabrication

include the use of automated sorting mechanisms, adjustable

shelling chambers to accommodate different bean sizes, and

energy-efficient designs. Advances in materials science, such as

the use of lightweight and durable materials, can improve

portability and longevity. Challenges in beans sheller machine

fabrication include balancing cost-effectiveness with

performance, optimizing design for different bean varieties, and

ensuring safety and reliability. Limited access to resources,

technical expertise, and infrastructure can hinder the

development and adoption of beans sheller machines in certain

regions. Future research in beans sheller machine fabrication

could focus on optimizing designs for specific bean varieties,

improving energy efficiency, and enhancing user-friendliness.

Collaboration between the researchers, engineers, farmers, and

end-users can facilitate the development of practical and

sustainable beans sheller machines tailored to the needs of

different communities.
