Quiz Solution

The document contains the solutions to 10 math problems from a quiz covering topics like functions, graphs, equations, and calculus. It provides the work shown to solve each problem, including determining domains and ranges of functions, performing algebraic operations on functions, and graphing functions from tables of values. The solutions reference two textbooks on multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.

MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 1

Math’s QUIZ solution

Firstname Lastname

Name of institution
MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 2

Problem 1. Find the domain of the following function. f ( x )= 2
x + 4 x−5
(5 points).

solution
¿ find the domain
2
x + 4 x−5 ≠ 0
Solving for x , we find

(X +1)(x−5)≠ 0

Hence

(x +1)≠ 0 which means x ≠−1

¿ x−5 ≠ 0 implies that x ≠ 5

Hence the domain−1 ≤ x ≤ 5

Problem 2. Sketch a graph of the following function by making a table of values.

2
f ( x )= ( x −2 ) (5 points).

Expanding we get x 2 – 4x + 4

X 0 1 2 3 4
F(x) 4 1 0 1 4
MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 3

Problem 3. Sketch a graph of the following function by making a table of values. g ( x )=−√ x
(5 points).

Solution

x 0 4 9 16
g(x) 0 -2 -3 -4
MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 4

Problem 4. Determine if the following graph represents a function. Then, give the domain
and range.

(5 points).

The graph represents a function because any possible vertical line drawn only intersect the

curve at one point. This proves that it’s a function.

The domain is represented by the range of value of x that are between -1 and 3.

The range is represented by the values of y which are between 0 and 4

Problem 5. Determine if the following graph represents a function. Then, give the domain

and range.
MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 5

(5 points).

The graph does not represent a function. This is because a line draw through point x -1 touches

two points of the curve. This disqualifies it from being a function. However, we are in a position

to extract the domain as the values between x= -4 and x= 2.

The range is between values of y which are between y =-1 and y= 4

Problem 6. Determine whether the following equation defines y as a function of x .

4 x+7 y=−3 (5 points).

Solution

Expressing y∈terms of x we get 7 y=−3−4 x

−3 4 x
Y= −
7 7

This indicate that any input in the value of x gives a unique value of y hence therefore y is a

function of x

Problem 7. Determine whether the following equation defines y as a function of x .

√ x−1= y (5 points).

Solution

¿ this case , if we pick x ¿ be 5 thenwe get two values of y as−2∧+2. This indicatesthat y isnot a function of x since o

therefore , √ x−1= y , does not define y as a function of x ,because some value( s)of x have more than one y

Problem 8. Henry is trying to plant enough trees along his property line to block view of a
highway that is being built. Henry can afford to buy and plant 3 trees per month, and he
already has 2 trees planted along the property line.
a) Write a function T representing the total number of trees he will have along his
property line after n months.
(2 points).
MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 6

Solution

T =2+3 n

b) Graph T. (2 points).

c) How many months will it take him to have 14 trees along his property line?
(1 point).

Solution
T =2+3 N
MATHS QUIZ SOLUTION 7

Replacing T with 14 ,
14=2+3 N
12=3 n
n=4 months

Problem 9. Let f ( x )=2 x−1 and g ( x )=x 2−3 x . Perform the following operation.

(f + g)(−2)
(5 points).

solution
( f +g ) ( x ) =x2 −x−1
substituting x with−2
( f +g ) (−2 )=x 2−x−1= (−2 )2−(−2 )−1=5

Problem 10. Let f ( x )=2 x−1 and g ( x )=x 2−3 x . Perform the following composition. Give
the domain.
g
f ()
( x )(5 points).

Solution

() x ( x−3 )
2
g
( x ) ¿ x −3 x =
f 2 x−1 2 x−1
finding domain
1
Findingundefined singularity points , x=
2
1 1
therefore domain becomes x< ∨x >
