M3 Quiz 1 Syllabus

This document contains lecture slides on the topics of complex variables, Laplace transforms, and z-transformations. The slides define the Laplace transform, provide examples of taking the Laplace transform of common functions, discuss properties like linearity, and include tables and exercises for finding Laplace transforms. Examples of functions presented include 1, t, t^2, e^at, sin(wt), and unit step functions. Properties covered include using s-shifting and applying transforms to piecewise functions.

Laplace Transform I

definition
If f (t) is a function defined for all t ≥ 0, its Laplace transform is the
integral of f (t) times e −st from t = 0 to ∞. It is a function of s, say,
F (s), and is denoted by L (f ); thus
Z ∞
F (s) = L (f ) = e −st f (t)dt
0

Examples I

Problems
1 Let f (t) = 1 when t ≥ 0. Find F (s) = L (f ).
2 Let f (t) = e at when t ≥ 0, where a is a constant. Find L (f ).
3 Let f (t) = t when t ≥ 0, where a is a constant. Find L (f ).
4 Let f (t) = t 2 when t ≥ 0, where a is a constant. Find L (f ).

Linearity of the Laplace Transform
The Laplace transform is a linear operation; that is, for any functions f (t)
and g (t) whose transforms exist and any constants a and b the transform
of af (t) + bg (t) exists, and

L {a · f (t) + b · g (t)} = a · L {f (t)} + b · L {g (t)}

Example
Find the transforms of cosh at and sinh at.
