Molecular Cloning

What is gene cloning?

The basic steps in a gene cloning experiment are:

1) A fragment of DNA containing the gene to be cloned, is inserted

into a circular DNA molecule called a vector, to produce a
recombinant DNA molecule
2) The recombinat DNA molecule is transported into a host cell

3/4) It multiplies, producing numerous identical copies

5) After a large number of cell

divisions, a colony, or clone, of
identical cells is produced. The
gene carried by the
recombinant molecule is now
said to be cloned

E. coli is the organism

commonly used for cloning
experiments
