Notes (1): The dimension k’ is the height where the minimum value and more of e as specified in this table exist at the width across
corners of the hexagon head
(2): c is the thickness at the position of dw (min.).
(3): The diameter ds of the shank portion is approximately the effective diameter of a thread.
(4): The dimension da is the diameter of the transitional circle where the radius of underhead fillet (r2) contacts the bearing sur-
face.
(5): If a pilot point is required, a large pilot point shall be used as standard. Only in the case that the tip interferes with the internal
threaded bag boss, a small pilot point that are marked with a diamond (♦) in the table above shall be used.
(6): The items marked with an asterisk * in the table, shall be used in special situations, such as tapped holes in castings.
Remarks: 1. Screw threads shall conform to Grade 2 as defined in NES D 1402 (Metric Screw Threads).

ANNEX
This Standard was established in 1978 for “UBS” bolts. From the start these were high performance bolts, and the speci-
fications aimed for a higher level than previous ordinary standards. Following is the history of revisions of this Standard.
O Revision points at this time
(1) Olive chromate which had not been previously revised was changed to hexavalent chromium free specification that
satisfies the ELV regulation in Europe.
However, since one standardized substitute material could not be developed, it was decided that a supplier shall
select a substitute material that conforms to the surface treatment specifications prescribed in NES D2110 (Speci-
fications for Bolt).
In addition, similar to the previous revision, the specification was changed without changing the part numbers
(codes).

O Revision in 2005
(1) Since the use of hexavalent chromium will be prohibited by ELV regulations from July 2007 for all vehicles in
Europe, and by the voluntary agreement of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association from January 2008
for new vehicle models in Japan, Nissan decided to prohibit the use of it from January 2007 for all European mod-
els and from July 2007 for new models for all other destinations outside Europe. Therefore, the surface treatment
was changed as follows. Because it was confirmed that the corrosion resistance and the tightening characteristics
were equivalent to the conventional specification, the surface treatment specification was changed without chang-
ing the part numbers (codes). For olive chromate treatment, however, no changes have been made this time be-
cause the development of substitute materials has not yet been completed.

(2) The unit for proof load stress was changed from MPa to N/mm .

O Revision contents in 2000 (second)

(1) The dimensions and tolerances for flange outer diameter and contact surface outer diameter of the parts listed in
the attachment have been integrated with the flange bolt shape in the Standard.
This makes it possible to eliminate the flange outer diameter trimming process, leading to lower costs.

O Revision contents in 2000 (first)

(1) For the purpose of reducing the cost and the part weight, the depth of recess on the head that was so far up to 1/3
depth of the head height was deepened to the limit by evaluating the strength and durability. For details, refer to
NES D 3102 (Shapes and Dimensions of Upset Bolt Head).
(2) Description of yield point (or proof stress) was changed from the conventional reference value to the standard value.
Moreover, in regard to the property class 7T, the standard value was corrected by matching it to the actual value in
the current state. (550 MPa ← 490 Mpa)
(3) In regard to the hydrogen embrittlement removal treatment (baking) for the property class 9T bolts to which elec-
tro-zinc plating was applied, it was added that it can be omitted by management of plating bath (hydrogen embrit-
tlement ratio).
(4) The underhead nominal diameter length for the nominal diameter bolt series was extended from 0.5d → d.
This improvement allows use with mating thick-plate BRKT (such as aluminum BRKT). When used together with a
deep upset, there is no change in cost.
(5) Introduction of the phase three for SI units was conducted. (The previous units were deleted.)

O Revision contents in 1998
(1) The dimension of the transition diameter (da) of the underhead fillet was reduced by matching it to the actual value.
(2) It has been described that “This APPENDIX shall not be applied to new designs”

O Revision contents in 1997

(1) ZnCr-N was set to Zinc Chromate Organic Coating as a surface treatment for parts where high corrosion-resistance
performance is not necessary in order to reduce costs electro-zinc plating is not possible (as a measure to prevent
galvanic corrosion at aluminum connections, as an anti-hydrogen measure for high-strength bolts, etc.
(2) Previously, the material for M14 and smaller 9T class bolts was MnB135H. However, because it was verified that
the same performance (mechanical properties, resistance to delayed fracture) can be obtained from MnB123H, the
material was changed.
This material change makes it possible to eliminate spheroidizing annealing, helping to reduce costs.
(3) Along with establishment of NES M 0301 (Substance Use Restrictions), the note that NES M 0301 must be con-
formed to was added.
(4) In order to improve assembly productivity, the small pilot point used for internal threads of bag boss in
units was set only for M6 and M8 bolts, which are used frequently.

O Revision contents in 1995

Beginning from about 1992, bolt types were integrated and reduced as part of activities aimed at reducing the number
of part types. The expanded use of flange bolts has been taken up as part of this policy.
However, the NES did not specify the bolts where the use of flange bolts was appropriate. Therefore, under the guid-
ance of the Reliability Engineering Center (KO4), and with the cooperation of the design-related divisions and the bolt
manufacturers, development tests utilizing quality engineering were performed. New parts were added based on the
results of these tests.

(1) Type
- Based on the test results, the current conditions of use were investigated and two types of bolts were specified:
effective diameter bolts and nominal diameter bolts. The lower-price effective diameter bolts were recommended
as bolts for general widespread use.
- The conventional bolts will be eliminated in the future. Here, they have been moved to the APPENDIX, and it was
decided that “they should not be used for new designs”.
(2) Basic concept for determining specifications
- The flange shape and dimensions shall be determined based on the results of tests utilizing quality engineering,
and cost shall be given priority over compact size and light weight.
- In order to avoid the use of unnecessarily higher specifications, reference was made to the specifications of
competitors in Japan and overseas, and ordinary specifications for a general-use part were selected.
(3) Bolt types
- Initially, for all bolts except full-thread bolts, the length of underhead 0.5d that was approximately equal to the
thread diameter and unification to a type with an undercut at the underhead fillet were considered, in order to
avoid increasing the number of bolt types.
- As a result of a study of the actual conditions of bolt use, it was found that 80% or more of bolts in use were so
called effective diameter bolts with a narrow underhead shank.
On the other hand, some connection locations used bolts with a shank diameter that was approximately equal to
the thread external diameter, while other locations used other types of bolts, such as bolts with an undercut
added.
- Because of the above, the effective diameter bolt series was specified as recommended parts, and the use of the
nominal diameter bolt series was restricted.
- The conventional types are used in some parts, however it was decided that they will not be used for any new de-
signs in the future. Those types no longer in circulation were deleted from the Standard and moved to the AP-
PENDIX.

(4) Primary specifications
Following is an explanation of newly added parts.
Item Description of contents
Range of nominal - Restricting the range to M6 to M12 was considered, however M14 is placed on the drawings, and in considera-
size d tion of its future incorporation into NES, M14 was also specified.
Thread pitch P - According to standard practice, course threads are standard for M8 and smaller, and fine threads are standard
for M10 and larger. However, coarse threads are currently used in the casting tap holes for M10 and M12,
therefore this practice was adopted for this revision. In relation to this, there are many cases of other compa-
nies in the same industry in Japan that have decided to use fine threads for all bolts. However, the U.S. Big
Three and others use course threads for all bolts.
Width across flats s - The small-size series was used as before, without consideration for conformance to ISO.
Width across cor- - as specified in JIS B 1021 (conforming to ISO). emin ≥ smin
ners e
Total height k - Total height was calculated as follows. Total height = Height of hexagon head (A) + Height of angled part at top
of flange (B) + Flange thickness (C)
where, A = k1 + k1 tolerance (k1 x 0.1), B = tan25° x (dw - e)/2, C = C (min) + C tolerance (C x 0.3)
Height of hexagon - A review was conducted from the dual perspectives of reducing size and improving tightening workability. With
head k1 consideration for past performance and the conditions of other standards, it was decided to set the standard
dimension as 0.6d or larger (d = nominal diameter) for sizes M8 and larger, and as the height of the hexagon
head for size M6.
Effective height k′ - This was set to 2/3 of k1, as the minimum height that satisfies the width across corners requirement.
Flange thickness - In order to lower the head height as much as possible, the thickness of the thin test piece at the development
c test was set to the minimum value. In addition, to clarify measuring position of the flange thickness, the thick-
ness at the position of dw (min) is specified. Along with this, thickness values are reviewed.
Angle of flange top - The test result data showed that an angle of 20° to 25° was best, followed by an angle of 10° to 15°.
surface For reasons including the desire to lower the head height and the desire not to dramatically increase flange ri-
gidity, and, with consideration for production variation, the angle was set at 15° to 25°. (This matches ISO.)
Flange outer di- - Ordinarily with cold heading, a fillet occurs around the outer periphery of the flange. Therefore, in order to en-
ameter sure the effective bearing surface diameter, it is necessary to make the flange larger by an equivalent amount.
dc As a result, the flange sizes were determined for each bolt size, with consideration for reducing size and for
cost performance. M6, M8 and M10, M12 and M14 shall be dw + 1.5 mm, dw + 1.8 mm, dw + 2 mm, and dw +
2.2 mm respectively.
Effective bearing Because reducing the size of the head is also an issue, this was determined from a calculation using the bear-
surface diameter ing surface pressure, so that the area near the second test level is the minimum dimension. In this case, the
dw bearing surface pressure were considered not to exceed 2,000 MPa when tightened to the torque equivalent to
ordinal 9T bolt.
Seat angle - Judging from the torque coefficient, 0° results in larger variation and affects the tightening accuracy. Therefore
(Concave) the minimum value remains 10'. The allowable range was set at 10' to 60', with consideration for production
variation.
Undercut - Using no undercut was considered, for reasons including diversity of locations where general-use parts are
used and cost. However there is strong demand for specifications where the underhead shank equals the
thread diameter and therefore it was determined that the nominal diameter bolt series shall include the under-
cut.
Undercut diameter - The undercut fillet and depth were determined based on the precondition that sufficient flange surface area
db must be secured so that the surface pressure does not exceed 200 MPa when tightened with a 9T bolt.
- If this diameter is increased, the flange becomes larger. Therefore it was made as small as possible.
- As a result, this diameter for M8 and M10 was reduced by 0.5 mm from the previous value.
Undercut fillet - This dimension should not be too large, however if it is too small the lifetime of the heading die is significantly
r2 shortened.
Based on the sizes of the flange diameter and undercut diameter, this dimension for M8 and M10 was reduced
by 0.1 mm from the previous NES value. In addition, only the minimum value is decided to be specified.
Undercut depth - This value was previously the same for all bolts M8 and larger, however due to the relationship with the seat
v surface area, the value was reviewed for M8 and M10 and was reduced by 0.05 mm.
Seat side shank - Because it is not possible to use a dimension approximately equal to the effective diameter for all bolts, the
diameter length 0.5d from the bearing surface side was set to a dimension equivalent to the thread external diameter.
ds However this type is only used for limited applications.
Intermediate shank - This dimension is equivalent to the roll formed base diameter. It is described as “approximate”, however the
d1 notes specify it as “approximately equal to the effective diameter”.
Underhead fillet r2 - Shall be as per JIS B 1005 (ISO 885). This value assumes that the bolt hole diameter is a heavy type class.
Diameter of
transitional circle da
Coaxiality, Perpen- - Determined by the provisions for existing NES parts.
dicularity The inclination of the head side was previously specified at 1°, however this value was too small and there was
no sense in managing it, therefore it was no longer specified in this revision.
However the APPENDIX was left unchanged.
Threaded end - Pilot point and chamfering end were specified.
It is expected that it will not be possible to use this pilot in many cases with blind tap holes in unit body. There-
fore, it is necessary to consider an integrated-type pilot point for all of the B Division in the future.
Property class - Unification of mechanical properties (either 8T or 9T) is an issue, however because these bolts will be used in
current-model vehicles and units, the 4T and 7T series are also necessary, and the mechanical properties were
left unchanged.
- Unification is desired to be executed in the future.
Surface treatment - Previously, MFZn5C was the standard for M6-size colored chromate zinc plating, however the surface treat-
ment added here is often used in areas such as the engine compartment where anti-corrosion capabilities are
required. Therefore, the standard was changed to MFZn8C.
