3 Synopsis: Valve timing and port timing diagrams using timing diagram and dial gauge;

Determination of rotation and firing order with the help of valve overlap; Valve clearance
adjustment and Influence of valve clearance to valve timing and engine performance; Study of
hydraulic, electrical and eddy current dynamometers; Engine performance testing and emission
analysis; Determination of fuel properties; Determination of the center of gravity location and
brake force distribution; Performing vehicle inspection based on the regulation Ethiopian
transport authority.

Course Learning Outcome ( CLO): At the end of the course the student will be able to do:

CLO1 Develop a valve timing diagram of the four and two stroke engine, and adjusting the valve timing

CLO2 Determine the rotational direction and firing order of an internal combustion engine
CLO3 Evaluate the performance of the engine using an engine dynamometer
CLO4 Determine the properties of fuel
CLO5 Perform annual vehicle inspection and prepare center of gravity and brake performance of the vehicle
Chapter 1: Valve timing and port timing diagrams using timing diagram and dial gauge

 Measuring the four stroke and two stroke engine valve timing
 Developing the valve timing (four stroke) and port timing (two stroke) diagram

Chapter 2: Determination of rotation and firing order with the help of valve overlap

 Identifying the rotational direction of the engine


 Determining the firing order and engine valve overlap

Chapter 3: Valve clearance adjustment and Influence of valve clearance to valve timing and engine
performance

 Measuring and adjusting the valve clearance


 Understanding Influence of valve clearance to valve timing and engine performance

Chapter 4: Study of hydraulic, electrical and eddy current dynamometers

 Understand the types of dynamometers


 Understand the operation of each types of dynamometers

Chapter 5: Engine performance testing and emission analysis

 Performance and emission test on automotive multi-cylinder engine


 Morse test on multi-cylinder engine
 Motoring test for indicated power
 Retardation test on I.C. Engines.
 Heat balance test on automotive multi-cylinder engine.
 To prepare variable speed performance test of a multi-cylinder/single cylinder petrol engine/diesel engine
and prepare the curves (i) bhp, ihp, fhp vs speed (ii) volumetric efficiency & indicated specific fuel
consumption vs speed.
 To prepare the graph between curves (i) bhp, ihp, fhp vs speed by using variable compression test rig.
 Measurement of HC, CO, CO2, O2 and NOX using exhaust gas analyzer
Chapter 6: Determination of fuel properties

 Study of International and National standards for fuels and lubricants,


 Measuring calorific value, density, viscosity, specific gravity, firing point, pour point,
cloud point, Study of Octane and Cetane Number of fuels.,
 ASTM distillation test of liquid fuels, Copper strip corrosion Test, etc.

Chapter 7. Determination of the center of gravity location and brake force distribution.

 Determine the vehicle center of gravity


 Determine the brake force distribution

Chapter 8: Performing vehicle inspection based on the regulation of Ethiopian transport authority

 Overall physical damage of the vehicle


 Testing the brake performance
 Inspecting the lighting system
 Testing the side slip
 Testing the suspension system
 Measuring emission
