UNIT 2 Assignment

1. The document contains 12 problems involving calculating and drawing shear force diagrams (SFD) and bending moment diagrams (BMD) for beams with different loading and support conditions. The beams include cantilever beams, propped cantilever beams, simply supported beams, and beams with overhangs. 2. The problems involve determining reactions, locating points of maximum bending moment, and calculating the bending moment at a given point for different beam configurations loaded with uniform distributed loads, concentrated loads, or a combination of both. 3. Formulas are given relating shear force, bending moment, and rate of loading at a beam section, and problems involve using these formulas to determine beam loading based on given shear force diagrams.

UNIT-II

PART-B

1. A cantilever beam loaded by a concentrated load at the free end together with a uniform
load distributed over the right half of the beam. Plot the shear and moment diagrams
shown in figure A.
2. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown in figure – B.
3. A horizontal beam 10m long carries a U.D.L of 180N/m over its entire span and in addition a
concentrated load of 200N at the left end. The beam is supported at two points 7m apart,
so chosen that each support carries half the total load. Draw S.F.D and B.M.D.

4. Calculate the reactions in the beam shown in Figure-C. Draw the SFD and BMD. Determine
the location of maximum bending moment and mark it clearly on each of the diagrams.

Fig – C Fig - D
5. A cantilever beam is loaded as shown in the figure - D. Plot the shear force and bending
moment diagrams. Also find the reactions at the fixed support. What is the bending
moment at a distance of 0.5 m from the fixed support?
6. a) Derive the relation between Shear Force, Bending Moment and rate of loading at a
section of a beam.
b) The shear force diagram for a cantilever beam of length 3 m is varying linearly from a
value of 12 N at the fixed end to a value of zero at the free end. Determine the loading on
the cantilever beam.
7. A beam of length 10 m is simply supported and carries point loads of 5 kN each at a
distance of 3 m, and 7 m from left support and also a uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m
between the point loads. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams for the beam.
8. a) What do you mean by point of contra flexure? Is the point of contra flexure and point of
inflexion different?
b) A cantilever beam of 2 m long is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 3 kN/m run
over a length of 1 m from the free end. It also carries a point load of 5 kN at a distance of 1.5
m from the free end. Draw the S.F and B.M.
9. Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the propped cantilever as shown in Figure - E and find
the position and magnitude of the maximum B.M.
10. Construct the axial thrust, shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam loaded
as shown in Figure - F

Fig – E Fig - F

11. A simply supported beam of span 10 m carry as UDL of 10 KN/m over a length of 3 m from
left support and also from right support. Draw SF and BM diagram.

12. A beam of length 12 m has overhanging of 3 m on left and right leaving the span between
the supports of 6 m. It carries UDL of 8 KN/m over the entire length and a concentrated load
of 10 KN at the right extreme end. Draw SF and BM diagrams and find the point of contra
flexure point.
