Title Mikrotik Practice No. 6

Introduction

In the world of networking, MikroTik stands as a powerful and

versatile solution that has earned a reputation for its robust capabilities.
It's like having a Swiss Army knife for network management at your
disposal. MikroTik is a Latvian company that offers a range of
networking products and software solutions. Their flagship product is the
MikroTik RouterOS, an operating system designed to transform standard computer hardware into
dedicated network routers. It's like giving your computer a new purpose – directing data traffic and
managing connections.

The possibilities with MikroTik are vast. With RouterOS, you can create complex networks
tailored to your needs. It's a bit like building a customized road system, with MikroTik allowing you to
set up routing, firewall, and wireless capabilities exactly as you envision.

One of the standout features of MikroTik is its flexibility.

Whether you're setting up a home network, managing a small
business, or even building complex networks for service providers,
MikroTik offers tools that adapt to various scenarios. Think of it like a
toolkit that lets you craft the network architecture that suits your
specific requirements. At the core of MikroTik's appeal is its routing
functionality. It's like the central command center for network traffic. You can manage data flow,
prioritize certain types of traffic, and even apply security measures to keep your network safe from
potential threats.

Experiment Result
Trial 1
The MikroTik hAP (home Access Point) router is a versatile device that offers a range of features to help
you manage and control your network. Here are some of the common features you can find on a
MikroTik hAP router:

1. Wireless Access Point (AP): The hAP router can function as a wireless access point, providing Wi-Fi
connectivity to devices within its range. It supports various Wi-Fi standards (e.g., 802.11n, 802.11ac) and
allows you to configure multiple SSIDs and wireless security settings.

2. Router/Firewall: The hAP can serve as a basic router and firewall, allowing you to establish network
boundaries and control traffic between your local network and the internet. It supports Network
Address Translation (NAT), port forwarding, and firewall rules.

3. DHCP Server: The router can act as a DHCP server, automatically assigning IP addresses and network
configuration settings to devices on your local network.

4. Bridge: MikroTik routers support bridging, which allows you to combine multiple network interfaces
into a single broadcast domain. This can be useful for creating a seamless network for both wired and
wireless devices.

5. VLAN Support: The hAP router can create virtual LANs (VLANs) to logically segment your network. This
is useful for isolating different types of traffic or creating separate networks within a single physical
infrastructure.

6. Quality of Service (QoS): QoS settings enable you to prioritize certain types of traffic over others,
ensuring that important applications (such as VoIP) receive sufficient bandwidth and minimizing latency.

7. VPN Support: MikroTik routers can function as VPN clients or servers, allowing you to establish secure
connections over the internet. They support various VPN protocols like PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, and OpenVPN.
8. Hotspot: The hAP router can create a Wi-Fi hotspot with captive portal functionality, which is useful
for providing guest access to the internet while requiring authentication or acceptance of terms.

9. Web Proxy: MikroTik routers can act as web proxies, caching frequently accessed websites to reduce
bandwidth usage and improve browsing speed for clients.

10. Remote Management: MikroTik routers offer remote management options, including a web-based
user interface (Winbox and Webfig), as well as command-line access (SSH and Telnet).

11. Monitoring and Logging: The routers provide tools for monitoring network activity, bandwidth
usage, and system health. You can also configure logging and notifications for important events.

12. Dynamic DNS: The hAP router supports Dynamic DNS (DDNS), allowing you to associate a domain
name with your router's changing IP address, making it easier to access your network remotely.

13. Wireless Client Mode: The router can also operate as a wireless client, connecting to another Wi-Fi
network as if it were a device. This can be useful for extending the range of your network or providing
connectivity to a remote location.

Remember that the exact features available on your MikroTik hAP router might vary based on the
specific model and firmware version. Always refer to the official MikroTik documentation for your router
model for detailed information about its capabilities and how to configure these features.

Reflection

Sir Wahyu’s teaching style is just to let us explore everything ourselves and he’s present just to
give us clues to find the solutions. Sir Wahyu’s teaching style taught me to be independent and critical in
thinking. The Mikrotik router proved the vast capabilities of the internet and the software industry, I
thought being able to control bandwith, and blacklist keywords to certain devices are advanced already,
turns out there’s more advanced things that I haven’t tried or even heard of. Everything starts from the
basics, being advanced is in a way is just simply combining basic principles.

Conclusion

In conclusion, MikroTik stands as a versatile networking solution that empowers you to shape
and manage your network infrastructure. Whether it's about setting up a basic home network or
creating complex setups for businesses, MikroTik's hAP lite Router gives you the tools to craft a network
tailored to your needs. Its flexibility, combined with powerful routing capabilities, allows you to build
efficient, secure networks that keep data flowing smoothly, have the most control of the network, and
testify the reachability of the internet. With MikroTik, it’s not just connecting devices – it’s orchestrating
a seamless digital experience.
