2 PCB Descriptions
Section Title Page
2.1 Overview
The following PCB assemblies are located in the Linac Control System (LCS)
cabinet:
• Display Processor (NT) Assembly
• Control Processor (RMX) Assembly
• I/O Assembly
• Video Digitizer Card
• Signal Isolation Assembly
Each assembly is described in the paragraphs that follow.
Refer to 4513 370 1876 Service Parts Manual for the part numbers of each
assembly.
Board Assembly
All of the above are held together by the Panel Assembly (LPT Fascia) with the
use of fixings. When assembled to the LPT Fascia the Assembly is to be
inserted into these Slots of the PCB Rack:
• Slot 0 NT Processor
• Slot 1 PMC Mezzanine board
• Slot 2 LPT Fascia
A backup battery is installed on the Multibus 2 Processor. The expected
minimum life of the battery is approx. 10 years when only the PC real-time
clock is powered from the battery.
Pre-installed onto the Multibus 2 Processor is the PC Bios Firmware and the
MSA Firmware.
Connections
The video input 'CH2' connector is used on each card. All video connections
are via the 'CH1', 'CH2', 'CH3' and 'Chroma' connectors.
The signals that are routed via each pin of the HD15 (Dual VGA) connector
are given in Table 2.1.

Software Driver
The following software drivers are installed onto the Display Processor
Assembly:
• Datapath Twinfinity driver
• Transport driver 1.15b (1.16)
Board Assembly
Connections
When the Video Digitizer Card is installed, a cable connects to the Signal
Isolation Assembly (see 2.6). This cable supplies the following signals to the
Video Digitizer Card:
• MLC processed video
• MLC unmodified video
The MLC unmodified video signal is used to measure the camera black levels.
The black levels are used to indicate camera damage due to radiation
exposure.
Software Drivers
The Datacell Snapper Library software driver is installed onto the Control
Processor Assembly.
Board Assembly
All of the above are held together by the Panel Assembly (I/O Fascia) with the
use of the fixings. When assembled to the I/O Fascia the assembly is to be
inserted into these Slots of the PCB Rack:
• Slot 7 FAB060 Base Board
• Slot 8 FAB060 I/O Expansion Panel
The four sockets on the FAB060 board have the resistor packs and the TTL
devices attached as given in Table 2.3.
Connections
Two ribbon cables (A 50-way and a 3x20-way) are used to connect the Fascia
Panel to these PCBs:
• Serial Link Interface
• Parallel Interface
The jumper connections are shown in Table 2.4

3 Fault Diagnosis
Section Title Page
3.1 Overview
This section explains how to run and interpret the following diagnostic tests:
Multibus Diagnostics:
• Processor configuration checks
• SCSI bus configuration checks
• Built-in system tests (BIST)
Console Diagnostics:
• Fan Fail test
• LCD panel tests
• Reference Clock test
• Reset Key test
• RTU tests
• Snapper card test
1 Power up the cabinet, and wait for the asterisks (‘*’) to appear on the
screen. Press the u key as soon as possible.
Note: If there is too long a delay before pressing the u key, the asterisk sequence will
be missed, and the system will enter a diagnostic sequence, which cannot be
interrupted for approximately five minutes. If this happens, to avoid wasting
time it may be helpful to reset the system CPU by inserting a small probe or
screwdriver into the CPU Reset hole on the front panel of the cabinet. To avoid
missing the asterisk sequence, watch for the VGA monitor LED to change
color from flashing amber to steady green – at this stage, the asterisks should
be generated even if they are invisible until the monitor has warmed up.

This section gives detailed diagnostic information for use when fault finding
around the SIA mounted inside of the back panel of the LCS cabinet.
Note: This board is sometimes called a SIB card. However this is not to be confused
with the SIB cards located in the linac control areas.
The sync signal is also output to the snapper card on pin 8 of SK4 for (pin 9 is
the digital ground). The signal can be viewed on TP29 wrt TP30.

The MLC Video signal passes through some signal processing on the SIA to
clean up the waveform and set a consistent black level.
The signal is output on SK4 pins 1 and 2 (view on TP 31). The cable from SK4
runs to the input of the snapper card attached to the control processor.
The signal is also output on sockets SK1 and SK2, these are connected to the
display processor for displaying the live image on the console and TRM’s.
Note: The live image is no longer displayed from release 2.01. Only the processed
image is shown which is sent via the backplane from the control processor to
the display processor.
The output signal from SK1 also appears on TP32. The applied waveform
should consist of a black level of 0.3V from the bottom of the sync pulse and
a peak white video component of 0.9V.
If this signal is missing, the observed symptom on the system is that the MLC
video appears black with only the grid and reference reflector squares
displayed. In addition, a 7102 inhibit will be displayed. However, a normal
black level will be reported on the debug terminal, e.g.

When the signal is missing the clock test fails on the console start application.
In addition, the RMX process will not start without this signal.

Note: These waveforms were taken at 400pps. The pulse rate will vary with the
selected PRF.
The PRF_Enable signal enters the LCD assembly through the 50-way
connector PL1 pin 21 and drives the Linac Interlock A LED. It is then passed
out on PL1 pin 5 to the SIA. The signal enters the SIA through the 20-way
socket PL6 pin 5 and drives RL1. The output contacts are across SK6 (Linac 2
serial link) pin 4 to pin 5. When the signal goes to the inactive state, the PRF
interlock chain is broken. See circuit diagram 4513 330 7021 for details.
The datalink enable signal is used to stop serial communications between the
LCS and the Linac. The signal enters the LCD assembly through the 50-way
connector PL1 pin 23 and drives the Serial link LED. It is then passed out on
PL1 pin 7 to the SIA. The signal enters the SIA through the 20-way socket PL6
pin 7. It is then routed into the FPGA where it is used to gate the serial
communications, which pass though the chip.
The 22V_Enable signal enters the LCD assembly through the 50-way
connector PL1on pin 19 and drives the Linac Interlock B LED. It is then
passed out on PL1 pin 9 to the SIA. The signal enters the SIA through the
20-way socket PL6 pin 9 and drives RL2. The output contacts are across SK5
(Linac 1 serial link) pin 4 to pin 5. When the signal goes to the inactive state,
the HT Contactor and movements contactor interlock chains are broken. See
circuit diagrams 4513 330 7054 and 4513 330 7053 for details.
The FPGA on the SIA produces an MLC Locked signal to indicate that the
camera in MLC has locked to the sync signal sent to it. The MLC Locked
signal is sent from PL6 Pin 13 to PL2 pin13 on the LCD and drives the MLC
Camera LED. The signal is also sent to the to SBX 350 card for use by the
control processor.
The SIA has comparators to monitor the 5V and ±12V supplies. If one of the
comparators detects a supply problem a logic 1 is asserted on pin 15 of PL6.
This is routed to the LCD assembly PL2. The signal passes through a buffer
and the PSU LED is turned off.
The power conditioning module in the PSU Rack in the bottom of the LCS
cabinet produces a fan fail signal when the one or more of the cooling fans
malfunctions. In failure mode, the signal puts a low impedance between PL7
pin 7 and PL7 pin2 (+12V) on the SIA. The signal is output as a logic 0 signal
on PL6 pin17 and therefore PL2 on the LCD assembly. The FANS LED will
then turn off. The signal is then output on PL1 pin 11 and sent via the 50-way
ribbon to the FAB 060 card.
On the LCD assembly a pull-up resistor is placed between the 5V supply and
PL3 pin 9. The reset switch is connected between PL3 pin 9 and pin 3.
PL3 pin 3 is connected to PL1 pin 13 (not as 4513 335 2000 says PL2 pin 19,
that is the CPU reset signal).
The 50 way ribbon cable from PL1 goes to the 3 row 50 way D-type on the
front of slot 8 in the multibus rack.
From there, it goes to the SBX 350 card on the I/O assembly (FAB 060).
On the LCD Assembly the CPU reset button (hole to the right of the LEDs on
the front panel) short-circuits pins 19 and 20 of PL2. The 20 way ribbon cable
goes to PL6 (pins 19 and 20) on the SIA, and are passed directly to PL7 pins
10 and 9 which connect direct to the backplane.
The following table contains a summary of the signal paths within the LCS
cabinet.
