1 Power up the cabinet, and wait for the asterisks (‘*’) to appear on the
screen. Press the u key as soon as possible.

Note: If there is too long a delay before pressing the u key, the asterisk sequence will
be missed, and the system will enter a diagnostic sequence, which cannot be
interrupted for approximately five minutes. If this happens, to avoid wasting
time it may be helpful to reset the system CPU by inserting a small probe or
screwdriver into the CPU Reset hole on the front panel of the cabinet. To avoid
missing the asterisk sequence, watch for the VGA monitor LED to change
color from flashing amber to steady green – at this stage, the asterisks should
be generated even if they are invisible until the monitor has warmed up.

2 When prompted to Enter number: ?, enter 2 within six seconds (else

system will default to option 1 and run BIST tests).
3 Check the display is as follows, indicating that all the power on tests have
been successful:

3.4 Signal Isolation Assembly (SIA) Diagnostics

This section gives detailed diagnostic information for use when fault finding
around the SIA mounted inside of the back panel of the LCS cabinet.

Note: This board is sometimes called a SIB card. However this is not to be confused
with the SIB cards located in the linac control areas.

3.4.1 MLC Video Signal

The key circuit diagram showing the MLC signal processing is the sheet 4 of
the 130 sheets of 4513 390 5514.
A standard 50 Hz, 625 line, interlaced sync pulse train is generated on the
board, it is then buffered and converted to a differential signal and output via
Sk7 pins 4 and 5 (TP24/25). The MLC camera receives this signal and
synchronizes to it, ensuring that the returning video synchronizes to the on
board timing reference.

The sync signal is also output to the snapper card on pin 8 of SK4 for (pin 9 is
the digital ground). The signal can be viewed on TP29 wrt TP30.

Figure 3.2 MLC Sync to snapper card (TP29)

If this signal is missing no video frames will be grabbed and:

• The MLC video display will be black (Red after a key reset)
• 7999 and 7804 inhibits will be displayed.
• The following messages will appear at start up on the debug terminal.

The video signal from the MLC enters the SIA on socket 3 and can be
observed by connecting an oscilloscope to TP37. The signal should resemble
Figure 3.3

Figure 3.3 Video from MLC (TP37)

Note: Fault-finding on the MLC video chain requires an oscilloscope with a

minimum 20 MHz bandwidth and with TV triggering function.

A buffered version of this signal is passed on to the snapper card (via SK4 pin
4) for calculating the black level at start up. The value can be read via item
2198, part 101. It is also displayed on the debug terminal (e.g. the 00009
value below).

Note: 9 is a typical value for a new camera and 0 for a disconnected line from the
SIA

The MLC Video signal passes through some signal processing on the SIA to
clean up the waveform and set a consistent black level.
The signal is output on SK4 pins 1 and 2 (view on TP 31). The cable from SK4
runs to the input of the snapper card attached to the control processor.
The signal is also output on sockets SK1 and SK2, these are connected to the
display processor for displaying the live image on the console and TRM’s.

Note: The live image is no longer displayed from release 2.01. Only the processed
image is shown which is sent via the backplane from the control processor to
the display processor.

The output signal from SK1 also appears on TP32. The applied waveform
should consist of a black level of 0.3V from the bottom of the sync pulse and
a peak white video component of 0.9V.

3.4.2 Timing Reference Signal

There is a 40 mS period (20 ms interrupt signal then a 20 ms gap) square
wave generated on the board, this is used to generate a software interrupt to
the control processor for use as a timing reference for the Linac control
system. The timing reference is converted to RS232 levels and drives the Ring
Indicator input on CH 0 (pin 9) of the control processor, from which the
interrupt is generated. The signal goes through PL9 pin 11 and can be seen on
TP45.

When the signal is missing the clock test fails on the console start application.
In addition, the RMX process will not start without this signal.

Figure 3.5 Processed Time (TP45)

3.4.3 Treatment Room Monitor Video Signals

These are industry standard VGA signals. In order to ensure sufficient signal
is present at the monitor (which can be up to 30 metres from the LCS
cabinet), a video driver circuit is used on each channel. The output is driven at
twice the line level, and back terminated with the Zo impedance of the output
coax. The two sync signals associated with these outputs are also driven by
low impedance MOSFET devices and back terminated, in order to guarantee
a sufficient signal with low reflection at the receiving end.
The three TRM channels enter the board on PL1, PL2 and PL3, and exit on
PL13, PL12 and PL11 respectively.

3.4.4 Debug Terminal RS-232 Signal

The signal isolation is provided in case the signal line remains in the
Treatment Room during radiation, although this is not a recommended mode
of operation. The signal runs to and from CH1 on the control processor
through PL9 then PL10 on the SIA.

3.4.5 Power Supply Signals

The supply voltages on PL4 should fall within the limits shown in table below.

1 -5 V ±0.1 V
2 +12 V ±0.15 V
3 -12V ±0.15 V
4 +5V_REF ±0.1 V

3.4.6 Serial Link Signals

The serial link signals start at the SBX 1553 cards on the I/O assembly. They
are then routed via the 25-way ribbon to PL8 on the SIA, then to the machine
via:
• SK5 - Linac 1
• SK6 - Linac 2
• SK7 - MLC
The function of the serial link signals is described in 4513 370 1869 - Elekta
Precise Corrective Maintenance Manual. However, the following waveforms
may be useful for diagnosis. These waveforms should be similar for both linac
serial links and the MLC serial link. Table shows the test points for looking at
these signals for each serial link.

3.4.7 Blanking Signal

The purpose of the blanking pulse is to halt serial communications between
the LCS and Linac at times when noise interference from the machine is likely.
The Blanking Signal is active at the time when the thyratron is firing (also just
before and just after). The signal is produced on the PPG card in the HT
control area. The signal is routed through the Linac serial link cables to the
SIA. The signal is then buffered in the FPGA before transmission through PL8
(50-way ribbon) to the SBX 1553 cards on the FAB 060 card. The signal is
used to inhibit communications.

3.4.8 LCD Assembly Diagnostics

3.4.8.1 Linac Interlock A LED

The PRF_Enable signal enters the LCD assembly through the 50-way
connector PL1 pin 21 and drives the Linac Interlock A LED. It is then passed
out on PL1 pin 5 to the SIA. The signal enters the SIA through the 20-way
socket PL6 pin 5 and drives RL1. The output contacts are across SK6 (Linac 2
serial link) pin 4 to pin 5. When the signal goes to the inactive state, the PRF
interlock chain is broken. See circuit diagram 4513 330 7021 for details.

3.4.8.2 Serial Link LED

The datalink enable signal is used to stop serial communications between the
LCS and the Linac. The signal enters the LCD assembly through the 50-way
connector PL1 pin 23 and drives the Serial link LED. It is then passed out on
PL1 pin 7 to the SIA. The signal enters the SIA through the 20-way socket PL6
pin 7. It is then routed into the FPGA where it is used to gate the serial
communications, which pass though the chip.

3.4.8.3 Linac Interlock B LED

The 22V_Enable signal enters the LCD assembly through the 50-way
connector PL1on pin 19 and drives the Linac Interlock B LED. It is then
passed out on PL1 pin 9 to the SIA. The signal enters the SIA through the
20-way socket PL6 pin 9 and drives RL2. The output contacts are across SK5
(Linac 1 serial link) pin 4 to pin 5. When the signal goes to the inactive state,
the HT Contactor and movements contactor interlock chains are broken. See
circuit diagrams 4513 330 7054 and 4513 330 7053 for details.

3.4.8.4 MLC Camera

The FPGA on the SIA produces an MLC Locked signal to indicate that the
camera in MLC has locked to the sync signal sent to it. The MLC Locked
signal is sent from PL6 Pin 13 to PL2 pin13 on the LCD and drives the MLC
Camera LED. The signal is also sent to the to SBX 350 card for use by the
control processor.

3.4.8.5 PSU LED

The SIA has comparators to monitor the 5V and ±12V supplies. If one of the
comparators detects a supply problem a logic 1 is asserted on pin 15 of PL6.
This is routed to the LCD assembly PL2. The signal passes through a buffer
and the PSU LED is turned off.

Fault Diagnosis
Signal Isolation Assembly (SIA) Diagnostics

3.4.8.6 Fans LED

The power conditioning module in the PSU Rack in the bottom of the LCS
cabinet produces a fan fail signal when the one or more of the cooling fans
malfunctions. In failure mode, the signal puts a low impedance between PL7
pin 7 and PL7 pin2 (+12V) on the SIA. The signal is output as a logic 0 signal
on PL6 pin17 and therefore PL2 on the LCD assembly. The FANS LED will
then turn off. The signal is then output on PL1 pin 11 and sent via the 50-way
ribbon to the FAB 060 card.

3.4.8.7 Reset key switch

On the LCD assembly a pull-up resistor is placed between the 5V supply and
PL3 pin 9. The reset switch is connected between PL3 pin 9 and pin 3.
PL3 pin 3 is connected to PL1 pin 13 (not as 4513 335 2000 says PL2 pin 19,
that is the CPU reset signal).
The 50 way ribbon cable from PL1 goes to the 3 row 50 way D-type on the
front of slot 8 in the multibus rack.
From there, it goes to the SBX 350 card on the I/O assembly (FAB 060).

3.4.8.8 CPU Reset

On the LCD Assembly the CPU reset button (hole to the right of the LEDs on
the front panel) short-circuits pins 19 and 20 of PL2. The 20 way ribbon cable
goes to PL6 (pins 19 and 20) on the SIA, and are passed directly to PL7 pins
10 and 9 which connect direct to the backplane.
