He doubts that his parking permit will let him park near his own building.
He strongly prefers to park the car near his brother’s building.
He believes his brother will prevent him from parking near his own building.
학생
Hi This is university housing, right? I need to talk to someone about changing residence halls.
도우미
kay let me give you an application to fill out.
학생
I already did that last week but I haven't heard anything so I thought I should come by and see
what's going on with it.
도우미
H h okay your nameEricPalmer.
kay Eric let's see.Well the system says you're currently at 212 Harris Hall.
Is that right? Hey, didn't you and your roommate recently win the room decorating contest?
학생
wow you heard about that?
도우미
yes we keep up on all the news of residents' life. ongratulationsThank you.
Okay so I see here that you want to change toBradford Hall. Why is that? I mean you must like your
current dorm.
You went to a lot of trouble to decorate your room Yeah
학생
but my brother and I share a car and he lives inBradford. I have to walk all the way over there
whenever I need to use it.
도우미
Your parking permit should allow you to park near your building as well.
학생
Yeah that's going to happen. You don't know my brother anyway he needs the car for an evening
job off campus so it's got to be at his place overnight.
도우미
I see.Well the problem is thatBradford Hall was overbooked this semester. verbooked Yes each
year there are a lot of students who apply to the residence halls and then at the last minute end
up taking a semester off from school or deciding to go to an entirely different university.Whatever
the case anyway, usually if we don't overbook, we end up with a lot of empty rooms.
학생
But now there aren't enough rooms.
도우미
Yes once in a while more students show up than we expectThat's what happened here. We've had
to put some students three to a room until we can move them to other halls.
학생
So I can't get intoBradford Hall. What about the next building overSmith Hall?
도우미
Well, because of the overbooking, students moving out ofBradford Hall have priorityThat means
applications submitted for other reasons such as yours will have to wait.
학생
Do you have any idea how long it might be?
도우미
We hope to be able to resolve the overbooking by the end of this monthThen we can look at other
requests to change residence halls.
학생
Do you think it'll happen before the weather gets cold? I'm not looking forward to walking through
snow and ice to get to the car
도우미
Well, I can't make any guarantees. We still have to look at a lot of applications.
Tell you what. heck back in a couple of weeks and we'll see how things look then. kay
학생 thanks..

Why synthetic paints became less popular after the twentieth century

The use of synthetic paints by twentieth century artists

What is the professor's opinion about synthetic paint and twentieth century art?
Synthetic paint was not used in highquality paintings.
The impact of synthetic paint has been overlooked.
Artists should have used more synthetic paint than oil paint.
Synthetic paints were less suitable for large paintings than other paints were.

According to the professor, what were two things that using synthetic paint enabled Siqueiros to
do when making murals? Click on 2 answers.
Produce murals that were less easily damaged by weather
He Use colors that were brighter than those allowed by traditional paints
Apply the paint by spraying instead of brushing
Paint on a wider variety of surfaces
5
According the discussion, what can be inferred about how Pollock applied synthetic paints in his
work?
He needed to use several different kinds of brush strokes.
He carefully planned where paints canvas.
He mixed synthetic paints with traditional oil paints.
He incorporated techniques that he learned fromSiqueiros.
6
Why does the professor mention airplanes and radios?
To give examples of objects portrayed in a mural
To describe ways that some artists became wellknown
To point out widespread uses of synthetic materials
To describe an aspect ofPollock's point of view about art
To part of a lecture in an art history class.
참석자 2
When we talk about art, we often refer to the techniques the artists use to create their works of art.
For example, we might talk about the way an artist combines colors in a painting but doing so kind
of glosses over the role the materials play in an artist's work as we'll be talking about to day the
material.
In this case, the type of paint is important because it affects how the paint is used, how it's applied
to a surface.
Even experts sometimes lose sight of this.
참석자 2
But beginning in the early part of the 20th century, some artists began to move from using oil
based paints to synthetic paints.
I, well, I've always wondered if people really appreciated the important role that these new paints
played in 20th century art whether they fully grasped how something as seemingly simple as the
type of paint changed things.
참석자 2
With that in mind, let's look at the paints first and some of their properties.
Traditional oil paints were usually made of vegetable oils like linseed oil, which is made from a grain.
The oil holds the pigments, the coloring agents or substances in place.
Oil paints are thick and take a long time to dry.
But then in the early 20th century, synthetic paints came along, which were first developed for
things like painting houses or cars.
참석자 2
One such synthetic paint was enamel paint.
Enamel paint uses a synthetic resin to hold the pigment instead of oil.
It has a much thinner consistency but dries very shiny and tough.
It's just one of many types of synthetic paint.
So according to what you've read in your textbook, what are the different properties of oil paints
and synthetic paints?
참석자 3
The synthetic paints flow more easily but also dry faster than the thicker oil paints do
참석자 2
and what else and they were also cheaper.
Exactly the high cost of oil paints and the ease of using a namel were good reasons why many
artists turned to synthetic paints, which are still less expensive today.
In the 1940s during and after the Second World War, oil paints were also harder to get.
They just weren't as easily available.
So naturally artists turn to synthetic paints like enamel house paints.
Now let's look at a couple of artists and their choices of paint.
참석자 2
David Alfaro Siqueros, a Mexican painter of murals, those very large wall paintings and there's also
Jackson Pollock, an American who made abstract paintings on canvas.
In 1936, Cicarro set up a painting workshop in New York where he demonstrated to other artists
some of the new synthetic paints he was using.
Pollock was one of those artists to really get into the experience.
They poured paint on services and dripped it and splattered it and threw it.
They didn't just use a brush.
참석자 2
Ciceros also used these new paints for his murals.
Using paint created for cars gave him the advantage of making his murals more weather resistant
and he was also an innovator in using special paint spraying equipment to apply the paint when
he used the newer thinner synthetic paints.
And what about Pollock? What can you tell me about his work?
참석자 3
He made large paintings on canvas.
They looked splattered like he poured or dripped the paint using a brush on canvas wasn't his style.
He kept the brush above the canvas with the canvas flat on the floor.
He kind of threw the paint at it with the brush.
He also used so much paint that it was just cheaper to use house paint, the enamel paint right
참석자 2
right and it wasn't just about saving money on paint.
Pollock was someone who looked around and saw that he was living in a new age, an age of
airplanes and radios.
And synthetic paint was also something new.

What is the lecture mainly about?
The first public performance of In C
The various influences on the composition of In C
The characteristics of In c that made innovative
The impact of In on the development of minimalism
According to the professor, in what way was the first live performance of In C surprise?
The number of performers was unusually small.
The reaction of the audience was extremely positive.
The composition was performed without a conductor.
The performers used unconventional instruments.
What opinion does the professor express when he discusses the varying lengths of In performances?
45 minute performance is a good length to engage audiences.
Riley probably never intended performances to last three hours.
Audiences minutes of repetitive music.
Recordings should be shorter than live performances.
