Solution & Scheme of Evaluation

Q. No. 1a With a neat circuit diagram, explain the operation of VDB amplifier.
Circuit Diagram : 2M,
Max. Marks 05 Equations : 2M,
Explanation : 1M.
VDB is a type of Emitter biasing of a transistor and is used as an amplifier.
VDB amplifier Circuit :

The values are required in the general circuit of VDB amplifier circuit. The input and voltages and
current equations can be deduced and the equations are :
VB = ( R2 / (R1 + R2) ) * VCC.
VE = VB –VBE
IE = VE/RE
IE = IC
VCE = VCC – IC (RC + RE).
Q. No. 1b Brief about the effect of variation of RE on ‘Q’ point on the DC load line.
Deducing output equation from circuit : 1.5M
Max. Marks 05 Dc load line graph : 2M
Effect of RE : 1.5M

For an Emitter biased circuit, the output voltage equation can be written by applying the KVL to the
output part of a circuit as follows. VCE = VCC –IC RC ------------------(1)
The DC load line can be drawn by using obtaining one point along VCE line and one point along IC
line. These two points can be obtained by using equation (1) as follows.
A point on VCE line can be obtained by making Ic =0 in equation (1). Hence, VCEQ = VCC.
Other point on IC can be obtained by making VCE=0 in equation(1). Hence, ICQ = VCC/RC. Hence the
resultant Dc load line graph will be as shown below.
The Q point is lying at the center of DC load line. Hence, VCEQ = Vcc/2 and ICQ = VCC/2Rc.

Effect of RE on Q point :
As Ic= IE. From equation (1), Increase in the value of RE, decreases the IE value, which in turn
decreases the Ic. If Ic decreases there is an increase in VCE from equation (1), hence Q point moves
downward for higher value of VCE, which is shown in above graph.

Q. No. 1c. i) Determine re' for the following Base Biased Amplifier circuit (βdc = 100).
To find IB: 1M
Max. Marks 04 To find IC : 1M
To find re' : 2M
re' = (25mV/ie ) -----------(1)
IB = Vcc / RB = 30µA
IC = βIB =3mA
IC = IE = 3mA
re' = 8.33Ω

For the following circuit shown below, with R G = 50Ω, determine amplified output
voltage.

Q. No. 1c. ii)

Max. Marks 06
Av = Vout /Vin ---------------------------------------------- (1)
Vout = Av Vin ---------------------------------------------- (2)
Vin = (Zinstage / (Zinstage + RG) ) Vg ---------------- (3)
Zinstage = R1 || R2 || Zinbase -------------------------- (4)
Zinbase = βre' --------------------------------------------- (5)
re' = (25mV/ie ) -------------------------------------- (6)

ie = VE/ RE = [(VB –VBE ) / RE ] ------------------- (7)

VB = [R2 / (R1 + R2)]VCC --------------------- (8)
Hence by using all these equations :
VB = 1.8V
VE = 1.1V
ie = 1.1mA
re' = 22.72Ω
Zinstage = 1.42 KΩ
Vin =1.93mV
Av = 117

Vout = 225.8 =226mV

Q. No. 2a Analyze an TSEB amplifier circuit and write equivalent AC models.
TSEB amplifier circuit : 1.5M
Max. Marks 06 Analization : 1.5M
AC equivalent models : 2M
TSEB amplifier circuit :

Analyzing TSEB amplifier : VBE = -0.7V

VE = VBE = -0.7V
VRE = 1.3V
IE = VRE/RE = 1.3mA
VC = VCC - ICRC = 5.32V

VCE = VC – VE = 6.02V

AC Equivalent Models :
Q. No. 2b Explain the operation of Emitter follower with waveforms.
Circuit diagram : 2M
Max. Marks 06
At Base, Emitter, Collector, Final output across RL : 1M (Each)
Emitter Follower Circuit :

The voltage waveform at the base is the addition of both AC and DC. Hence Waveform at the
base can be as shown below :

The voltage waveform at the emitter is the addition of both AC and DC. Hence Waveform at the
Emitter can be as shown below :

The Voltage waveform across RL is purely ac component of voltage across emitter, as DC

component is blocked by Capacitor C2. Hence,
The voltage waveform at the collector terminal is purely DC, as collector terminal is AC ground.
Hence,

Determine input impedance of the base for the following circuit shown below with β
= 200. What is the input impedance of the stage.
