Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: Remember the basic theories of Convergent divergent nozzle design.

CO2 :: Understand the operating principles of various rocket propulsion system.

CO3 :: Explain the applications and principles of Ram jet engine.

CO4 :: Examine the performance Scramjet engine.

CO5 :: Differentiate he advanced propulsion technique used for interplanetary mission.

CO6 :: Illustrate the Fundamental parameters of Combustion theory.

Unit I
Nozzle for jet engines : Theory of flow through nozzles, Convergent / Convergent – divergent
nozzles, Nozzle throat conditions – Nozzle efficiency – Losses in nozzles, Over expanded and under –
expanded nozzles, Equilibrium flow and frozen flow in nozzle, interaction of nozzle flow with adjacent
surfaces- thrust reversal.
Unit II
Fundamentals of Rocket Propulsion : Operating principle – Thrust equation - Rocket nozzle
classifications, Rocket and propellant performance parameters, specific impulse, specific thrust, total
impulse, mass ratio, propellant mass fraction, actual velocity, effective exhaust velocity, characteristic
velocity, propellant consumption, weight flow coefficient, thrust coefficient, Numerical problems
Unit III
Ramjet Propulsion : Ramjet operating principle - Subcritical, critical and supercritical operation,
Combustion in ramjet engine, Ramjet performance, ramjet design Calculations, Flame stability
problems in ramjet combustor.
Unit IV
Scramjet Propulsion : Ramjets at high speeds – Limitations, Need for supersonic combustion,
Introduction to scramjet, Preliminary concepts in supersonic combustion, Combined Cycle Engines,
Integral Ram Rocket (IRR), Air Turbo Rocket (ATR)
Unit V
Advanced propulsion techniques : Introduction to nozzle-less propulsion and basic concepts,
Electric rocket propulsion, Ion propulsion, Nuclear Rocket, Comparison of performance of these
propulsion systems with chemical rocket propulsion systems, Solar rocket propulsion system
Unit VI
Fundamentals of Combustion : Heat of reaction- first, second and third order reactions, premixed
flames – diffusion flames, measurement of burning velocity – various methods, effect of various
parameters on burning velocity, flame stability –deflagration – detonation, Rankine -Hugoniot curves,
radiation by flames
