Science7 Q1 WK5

This document provides a student learning guide about separating mixtures. It discusses several methods for separating mixtures, including simple separation methods like filtration and more complex methods such as evaporation, distillation, magnetic separation, chromatography, and centrifugation. Students are tasked with identifying these separation methods from jumbled letters, separating mixtures found around their home using these techniques, and answering questions to assess their understanding of separating mixtures.

National High School STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE IN SCIENCE 7

Quarter I, Week 5

Lesson 5: Separating Mixtures

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

S7MT-Ie-f-4: Distinguishing mixtures from substances based on a set of

properties.

In this set of activities, you should:

1. identify methods used to separate the components of a mixture; and
2. separate mixtures using simple separation or other methods in separating
components of a mixture.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER

Good day future scientist! I hope all is well. Prepare yourself because today you are
going to prove that you are practical and resourceful.
Sand and water, blood, air, wine and many more. There are many examples of mixtures
everywhere. Did you realize that? For domestic purposes, industrial purposes and research
work mixtures are separated to obtain pure substance. Today, we will discuss some of the
techniques in separating mixtures.

Simple Separation Method - heterogeneous mixtures can be separated into their respective
constituents by simple physical methods.
1. Filtration- process used for the separation of one substance from another, such as solids,
liquids, and gases, with the aid of an object known as filter.

Other Methods in Separating Components of a Mixture

Heterogeneous mixtures can be specially separated into their respective constituents by complex methods.
1. Evaporation is process used to separate the liquid in a solution from a soluble solid by quickly or slowly
applying heat to the mixture.
2. Distillation is process of heating a mixture of two liquids with different boiling points.
3. Magnetic separation is process used to separate a mixture of metals and non-metals using a magnet.
4. Chromatography is a process used to separate liquid substances in a solution. The separate substances
form bands of color called chromatograms.
5. Centrifugation is a process that spins the sample very rapidly, that denser materials go to the bottom.
