Build Your Space Project

The document outlines a proposed design for a high school biology classroom with a budget of $35,000. The classroom aims to create an open learning environment that engages students through various demonstration technologies. It seeks to expose students to career options in biology and narrow the gap between high school and college science education. The proposed design includes iPads, a digital whiteboard, tables and chairs, anatomy models, and an aquarium to simulate experiments and phenomena too difficult or dangerous for direct study.

Build your Space Project

Due date: Feb 18th - (25 pts.)

1. Student(s) name: Saya Oka

2. Choose your environment:

[1]
Environment: a) Mini-lab or classroom b) Conference room c) Office

Budget: $35,000.00 $15,000.00 $10,000.00

a) Classroom

3. Purpose:

Clearly define the purpose of the environment that you plan to build. Please be concise and to the
point. This should be a very short statement, anywhere between 2 – 3 sentences.

I design a classroom for a high school biology class. The design intends to create an open
atmosphere in the classroom and pull students’ interest in the biology field.

4. Project Narrative:

Describe the room/environment as you see it. What is the room/environment intended to improve or
facilitate? Why is it important to do so? How will this room/environment elicit your studying or work
activities? How is this space innovative and could it be scaled up or down in the future?

The classroom has several technologies that allow teachers and students to demonstrate/simulate
various phenomena/experiments and even do something difficult/dangerous for high school students
to conduct in the real world to pull their interest and let them expand options of their pathways after
high school. It is important to create such an environment because high school is a critical period to
explore their interests and career options, and they should be provided with a proper environment to
be able to picture themselves in the fields they are interested in. In addition, many students struggle
when they start higher education in STEM fields because of the big gap in content and teaching
styles between high school and higher education, so the classroom design also intends to narrow the
gap by allowing them to image how far higher education in the field goes more clearly. This space
could be scaled up along with students’ interest or development in the biology field since biology is
still a developing field and changes in teaching content are expected in the future; for example, if the
field of genetics further develop and become more focused, the classroom can implement more
equipment/models to learn about DNA.

5. Hardware:

● iPad (10th generation)

● Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

● Interactive Digital Whiteboard

● 1 Table & 4 Chairs Set (for students)

● Kidney Thermal Laminate Activity Table (for demonstration by a teacher)

● Task Chair (for a teacher)

● Anatomy Models Bundle

● Animal And Plant Cells Anatomy Model

● Lab-Aids Molecular Model of DNA and its Replication Kit

● Aquarium
● Solar Powered Silent Aquarium Oxygen Air Pump

6. Detailed Budget:
What is the expected cost of the project? Include startup costs, operating costs and maintenance
costs.
