Build Your Space Project
Build Your Space Project
[1]
Environment: a) Mini-lab or classroom b) Conference room c) Office
a) Classroom
3. Purpose:
Clearly define the purpose of the environment that you plan to build. Please be concise and to the
point. This should be a very short statement, anywhere between 2 – 3 sentences.
I design a classroom for a high school biology class. The design intends to create an open
atmosphere in the classroom and pull students’ interest in the biology field.
4. Project Narrative:
Describe the room/environment as you see it. What is the room/environment intended to improve or
facilitate? Why is it important to do so? How will this room/environment elicit your studying or work
activities? How is this space innovative and could it be scaled up or down in the future?
The classroom has several technologies that allow teachers and students to demonstrate/simulate
various phenomena/experiments and even do something difficult/dangerous for high school students
to conduct in the real world to pull their interest and let them expand options of their pathways after
high school. It is important to create such an environment because high school is a critical period to
explore their interests and career options, and they should be provided with a proper environment to
be able to picture themselves in the fields they are interested in. In addition, many students struggle
when they start higher education in STEM fields because of the big gap in content and teaching
styles between high school and higher education, so the classroom design also intends to narrow the
gap by allowing them to image how far higher education in the field goes more clearly. This space
could be scaled up along with students’ interest or development in the biology field since biology is
still a developing field and changes in teaching content are expected in the future; for example, if the
field of genetics further develop and become more focused, the classroom can implement more
equipment/models to learn about DNA.
5. Hardware:
● Aquarium
● Solar Powered Silent Aquarium Oxygen Air Pump
6. Detailed Budget:
What is the expected cost of the project? Include startup costs, operating costs and maintenance
costs.
*Besides the listed hardwares, the cost for maintaining the aquarium (estimated: $25/month) and the cost
for fish ($25-100), water plants($30), and fish food must be considered.
7. Visuals:
Provide images that clearly depict selected technologies or ideal technology environment set-up.

Mini-lab or classroom should be designed for 10-15 students, including an instructor station.
