Firma - Exercise 3 - Volume Model

The document provides instructions for using finite element analysis to model and analyze a heavy duty castor. It describes simplifying the castor geometry by removing unnecessary features. It then instructs to perform a static analysis on the full volume model with specified boundary conditions and loading. It asks to calculate displacements and stresses, and redo with a refined mesh. It also provides instructions to create a reduced symmetry model and compare results and computation time. Finally, it introduces analyzing a bolt/pin connection as another exercise.

Volume Model
3.1 Heavy duty castor
The heavy duty castor shown below shall be calculated using finite elements.

Geometry
The geometry of the heavy duty castor is available as a data file (castor.x_t)
Material
Angle bracket and axle are made of steel: Elastic Modulus E = 210000 N/mm², Poisson's ratio  = 0.3
Load
F = 10000 N

3.1.1 Preparation of the geometry

- Open the geometry data file “castor.x_t” in SpaceClaim.
- The focus of the calculation should be on the two angle brackets and the axis. Therefore, simplify
the geometry according to the image on the right. Remove
o wheel
o base plate
o drilling holes
o stiffeners
o rounded corners.

3.1.2 Full Model

- A static analysis shall be carried out for the volume model.
- Support the base plates of the angle brackets from below (rotated system as in the right picture)
with a "fixed support".
- Apply the load from the wheel as a distributed load on the surface of the axle.
- The model consists of several components. When calculating assemblies, contact areas are
automatically generated between the individual components. Look at the contact conditions
between the components and make sure that the "Bonded" contact type is selected.
- Calculate the displacements. Also look at the components of the displacements separately for the
axis and the angle brackets. What are the maximum displacements, where do they occur?
- Calculate the equivalent stresses. What is the maximum stress value, where does it occur?
- Redo the calculation with a refined mesh.

3.1.3 Reduced model using symmetry

- Reduce the size of the model in SpaceClaim by using symmetry.
- Apply the symmetry boundary conditions and the correct load in ANSYS Mechanical. For the
symmetry boundary condition, select "Remote Displacement" or alternatively a "Frictionless
Support".
- Calculate the displacements and the equivalent stresses.
- Compare the computing time between full model and reduced model.
- Take a closer look at the stresses next to the axle. How could you change the design to reduce
stresses in this area?

3.2 Bolt / Pin Connection

The bolt / pin connection shown below shall be calculated using finite elements.
