The question paper is divided into four sections:
(1) Section A: Q No. 1 contains Ten multiple choice type of questions carrying One mark
each.
Q No. 2 contains Eight very short answer type of questions carrying One mark
each
(2) Section B: Q. No. 3 to Q. No. 14 contains Twelve short answer type of questions carrying
Two marks each (Attempt any Eight)
(3) Section C: Q. No. 15 to Q. No. 26 contain Twelve short answer type of questions carrying
Three marks each (Attempt any Eight)
(4) Section D: Q. No. 27 to Q. No. 31 contains Five long answer type of questions carrying
Four marks each. (Attempt any Three)

(i) Where does a body weigh more, at the surface of the Earth or in a mine ?

(ii) What is beat frequency ?

(iii) Explain the sign convention of Kirchhoff's second law.

(iv) Magnetic flux of 50  Wb is linked with a coil when a current of 0.1 mA passes through it. What is the
self inductance of the coil ?

(v) Two metals, P and Q, have work functions 4 eV and 6 eV, respectively. Which metal has the lower
threshold wavelength for photoelectric effect ?

(vi) Define modulation and transducer.

(vii) Find the radius of gyration of a uniform solid sphere about its diameter

(viii) Give any two methods to increase the sensitivity of a galvanometer.

Attempt any Eight questions of the following: [16]

3. A thin ring has mass 0.25 kg and radius 0.5 m. Calculate its moment of inertia about
(a) an axis passing through its centre and perpendicular to its plane
(b) an axis passing through a point on its circumference and perpendicular to its plane
(c) a diameter.

4. Define (a) angle of contact (b) surface tension.

5. State the physical significance of moment of inertia of a body.

6. In Melde’s experiment, three loops are obtained when the tension in the string is 10 g wt. Determine
the tension in the string required to obtain four loops, if all other conditions are constant.

7. State the properties of  particles.

8. Compare the rates of emission of heat by a blackbody at 727 °C and at 227 °C.

9. Draw a neat labelled block diagram of a generalized communication system.

10. State the applications of surface tension.

11. A flat curve on highway has a radius of curvature of 400 m. A car rounds the curve at a speed of 32
m/s. What is the minimum value of coefficient of friction that will prevent the car from skidding ?

12. Distinguish between p-type and n-type semiconductors.

13. Calculate the length of an open organ pipe which resonates with a tuning fork of frequency 512 Hz if
the velocity of sound in air is 340 m/s. (Ignore the end correction.)

14. State the properties of a steady interference pattern.

SEC – C

Attempt any Eight questions of the following: [24]

15. A stone is whirled in a vertical circle at the end of a rope of length 0.5 m. Find the velocity of the stone
at (i) the lowest position (ii) a midway position (iii) the top, to just complete the circle.

16. A steel wire of cross-sectional area 1 mm2 is stretched by 10 N. Find the lateral strain produced in the
wire. [Given: Ysteel = 2  1011 N/m2,  = 0.291]

17. Two diametrically opposite points of a metal ring are connected to two terminals of the left gap of a
metre bridge. A resistance of 15  is introduced in the right gap. If the null point is obtained at a
distance of 40 cm from the left end, find the resistance of the wire bent in the shape of a ring.

18. A 100 turn rectangular coil, 30 cm  15 cm, is placed in a uniform magnetic field of induction 2  10−5
T. The coil is suspended by a phosphor-bronze wire whose twist constant is 12  10−9 N m/degree. If
the coil is deflected through 30°, compute (i) the restoring torque (ii) the current through the coil.

19. The velocity of sound in air at room temperature is 340 m/s and the length of air column in a pipe is 20
cm. Find the frequency of the second overtone in a pipe when it is closed at one end and open at both
ends, having the same inner diameter of 4 cm.

20. In a biprism experiment, show that d = d1d 2 using the conjugate foci method. Draw the necessary
ray diagrams.

21. State Einstein's equation of photoelectric effect and explain the characteristics of the effect on the basis
of the equation.

22. Explain the reflection of transverse and longitudinal waves from a denser medium and a rarer medium.

23. Explain refraction of light on the basis of wave theory. Hence prove the law of refraction.

24. Derive an expression for the energy stored in a charged capacitor. Express it in different forms.

25. From the differential equation of a linear SHM, obtain the expressions for the acceleration, velocity
and displacement of a particle performing linear SHM.

26. Obtain an expression for the period of a satellite in a circular orbit around the Earth.

SEC – D

Attempt any Three questions of the following: [12]

27. Explain the concept of de Broglie wave (matter wave).


An electron is orbiting in the 4th Bohr orbit. Find the ionizing energy for this atom if the ground state
energy is −13.6 eV.

28. Explain the terms: (i) inductive reactance (ii) capacitive reactance.
A coil of 2000 turns, each of area 0.02 m2, is kept in a uniform field of magnetic induction 4  10−2 T.
If the coil rotates with a speed of 1200 rpm about an axis in the plane of the coil and perpendicular to
the magnetic induction, calculate the peak value of the emf induced. Also, write the equation of the
instantaneous emf generated in the coil.

29. Define an ideal simple pendulum. Show that under certain conditions, a simple pendulum performs
linear simple harmonic motion.

30. Define emission power and absorptive power. State Kirchhoff’s law of radiation and give its
theoretical proof.

31. In a hydrogen atom, an electron of charge e revolves in an orbit of radius r with speed . Prove that the
magnetic moment associated with the electron is given by er/2.
Find the magnetization of a bar magnet, of length 5 cm and cross-sectional area 2 cm2, if the magnetic
moment is 1 Am2.
