Week 6 Advance Differentiation Rules Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

The document provides examples and rules for differentiating exponential and logarithmic functions. It defines exponential and logarithmic functions and lists their key properties. The differentiation rules given are: 1) The derivative of a constant times an exponential function is the constant times the exponential times the derivative of the exponent. 2) The derivative of an exponential function is the exponential times the derivative of the exponent. 3) The derivative of the logarithm of a function is 1 over the function times the derivative of the function. 4) The derivative of the natural logarithm of a function is 1 over the function times the derivative of the function. The document then works through 12 examples applying these rules to compute derivatives.

What is an exponential function?

An exponential function is defined as a function
with a positive constant other than 1 raised to a
variable exponent.

What is logarithmic function?

A logarithmic function is a function of the form.
which is read “ y equals the log of x, base b” or “ y
equals the log, base b, of x.” In both forms, x > 0 and b
> 0, b ≠ 1. There are no restrictions on y.
