Smart Board

A smart board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for input. It

was firstly introduced in 1991 by David Martin and Nancy Knowlton. Smart boards

are connected to the computer through a projector where an image of a computer

screen is displayed. It can be connected wirelessly or through cables.

Some features of the smart boards are:

1. Touch screen

2. Human interaction

3. Zooming capabilities

4. Sensitive to human finger touch or pen and eraser

Why use smart boards:

1. Interaction increases attention span

2. Visual attention increases

3. Enhance learning for children who are more visual and tactile learners

Benefits of using a smart boards include; enhancing learning and teaching, ability to

interact and share information on the internet and ability to access online

information.
However, smart boards have drawbacks. With smart boards, students spend a lot of

time looking at the screen; with this students may be engaged only in passive

learning. Teachers use only the computer for research and stop taking students to

the library.

Smart boards can be used for students with disabilities. Smart board interactive

whiteboards paired with smart audio enhancement systems are an ideal way to

assist children who have learning impairments to comprehend lesson content more

easily.

By adding colored text, video clips, animation and images into Smart Notebook

lessons, teachers can supplement their own oral instructions which can make it

easier for dyslexic students to grasp key concepts.

Smarts boards in different aspects:

Training – one can use smart boards to learn as it is very easy to use, allow you to

store notes, view diagrams, browse the web to carry out research and also store

voice memos.

Conducting meetings – smart boards can be used to display statistical work from

computers so that a vast number of persons can see the information displayed. The
speakers allow persons to hear clearer and also touch the screen allows easy access

to information for retrieval.

Presentation – smart boards allow you to present information in a high quality

manner because of the speakers which may allow the, to hear audio works. The

touch screen of smart boards may allow for easy interactions with the user when

the need may arise.

Science – smart boards allow science to come to life and enable teaching to be done

with less difficulty. Teacher many dissect animals using smart boards, show video

clips and do research on the internet.

Spanish - smart boards can be used to teach Spanish as it can give pronunciation of

words and allow one to see the conjugation of verbs. It may connect to the internet

and as such make it easier for Spanish teacher to grammar, verbs, vocabulary, etc.
