Introduction
Teaching learning language is a process in transmitting the information or materials to be
understood the learners. The main components in teaching learning is materials, materials development
and instructional materials.

I. Objectives

At the end of the end of this module, students should be able to:
1.Point out the positive and negative trends in materials development.
2. Make a stand on the emerging issues in materials development.

II. Lecture

Positive Trends in Materials Development

1. Materials should require learners to invest for themselves and discover how a certain vocabulary or
expression on the target language is used in context
2. More materials are used as corpus data (collection of written and spoken language) reflecting the
language used
3. Produce reader series relationship between students and learning process
More extensive readers now see risks in fewer linguistics content and more provocative content
4. Increased in attempts to personalized the learning process
5. Increased in attempts to gain the affective engagement of the learners
6. Increased in the used of internet as a source of knowledge
7. There is an evidence of the movement towards the experience of spoken grammar
8. There are institution that creates their own English language materials

Negative Trends in Materials Development

1. More pronounced return of central grammar in Language curriculum


2. Greater prominence in the teaching of speaking and listening
3. Learners have short attention span
4. Learners do not gain if they are engaged in intellectually demanding activities
5. Neglect in the use of Literature
6. Predominance of analytical activities (while neglecting the different activities that cater the preferred
learning styles of the leaners)
7. Absence of controversial issues
8. We underestimate the linguistics capabilities of our learners
9. Focused English as used by native speakers
Some emerging issues in materials development.

1. Should materials be driven by theory or by practice?


2. Should materials be driven by syllabus needs, learners’ needs or market needs?
3. Should materials cater the learners’ expectations or should try to change them?
4. Should materials aimed for language development only?
5. Should materials contribute to teachers’ development and language learning?
