COMPLETE TOOLS IN SEWING

MEASURING TOOLS

SEWING GAUGE - is a handy tool for making quick and consistent

measurements. Easy to use, it guarantees symmetrical hems, evenl
y placed buttonholes, consistent seam allowances, and more. Typic
ally compact, sewing gauges are meant to make small measureme
nts to maintain accuracy for a beautiful finish.

FRENCH CURVE - A French curve is a template usually made from

metal, wood or plastic composed of many different segments of the
Euler spiral (aka the clothoid curve). It is used in manual drafting an
d in fashion design to draw smooth curves of varying radii.

TAPE MEASURE - A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible r

uler used to measure length or distance.
CUTTING TOOLS
ROATARY CUTTERS - A rotary cutter is a tool with a very sharp cir
cular blade, mainly used by patchworkers for cutting fabric with a sp
ecial quilting ruler on a self-healing mat designed for the purpose. T
hey are predominantly used for cutting straight edges of fabric.

SEAM RIPPERS - Seam rippers are tools designed to slide betwee

n sewn stitches and gently cut the thread without tearing at the surr
ounding fabric. They allow the user to cut, hook, and remove the thr
ead from a seam, and they're a life saver for tailors and seamstress
es everywhere.

EMBROIDERY SCISSORS - Embroidery scissors are a special kin

d of scissors which are used by embroiderers. They are small, very
sharp, and are pointy. Embroiderers use these scissors to snip thre
ads close to the fabric.
MARKING TOOLS
TRACING WHEEL - A tracing wheel is an instrument with multiple t
eeth on a wheel attached to a handle. The teeth can be either serrat
ed or smooth. It is used to transfer markings from patterns onto fabr
ic with or without tracing paper, this sewing tool also makes slotted
perforations.

TAILORS CHALK - Tailors chalks are used for temporary guide mar
kings on fabric to indicate where it needs to be cut or left out, shorte
ned or lengthened, or where a pleat needs to be made, and so on.
Those marks can be brushed or washed off the material when no lo
nger needed.

CHALK PENCILS - Dressmaker's chalk is an indispensable aid in d

ressmaking and sewing for marking and tracing on fabrics. A chalk
pencil can be used to make totally accurate markings on the fabric.
A plastic brush on the end of the attached cap helps later to remove
the traced chalk lines.
SEWING TOOLS
NEEDLE - To create a passage in the material for the thread to pas
s through. To carry the needle thread through the material and form
a loop which can be picked up by the hook or looper mechanism.

PIN - A pin is a device, typically pointed, used for fastening objects

or fabrics together. Pins can have the following sorts of body: a shaf
t of a rigid inflexible material meant to be inserted in a slot, groove,
or hole (as with pivots, hinges, and jigs)

PINCUSHION - a small cushion into which pins are stuck for conve
nient storage.

THREAD - Sewing thread is the yarn used to combine two or more

fabric pieces together in garments, accessories, and other textile pr
oducts. Thread may be comprised of the same construction and fibr
e content as the garment, but is often different.
SEWING MACHINE
A sewing machine is a complex machine with
many different parts. The most important part
of the sewing machine is the needle. The nee
dle is what actually sews the fabric together. T
he other parts of the sewing machine are ther
e to help the needle do its job.
PARTS OF THE SEWING MACHINE
Spool Holder
The main function of the spool holder is to control the thread
direction and hold the spool. The spool holder may be in the h
orizontal or vertical direction. Sometimes a sewing machine h
as more than one spool holder when a decorative stitch is ne
eded.
Bobbin
The bobbin is a small spindle that is wound with thread. Bobbin s
upplies the bottom thread during the stitch formation.
Bobbin Case
The bobbin case holds the bobbin. The hook of the bobbin ca
se catches the previously produced needle loop and moves o
ver the bobbin case. As a result, a stitch is formed by the inter
lacing of bobbin thread & needle thread.
Thread Guide
A thread guide is used to control the direction of the thread. It als
o helps plenty of supply of thread
Tension Regulator
It is used to control tightness or looseness of the upper thread
to avoid puckering problems.
Thread Take-Up Lever
The main function of the thread take-up lever is threading the sew
ing needle and maintaining the proper tension. If the thread take-
up lever is incorrect, the thread will knot up, broken & jam in the
machine.

Pressure Bar Lifter

The pressure-bar lifter is used for raising and lowering the pressure fo
ot.

Stitch Length Regulator

The main function of the stitch length regulator is to maintain the lengt
h of the stitch during sewing. Stitch length may vary depending on the
fabric type and sewing thread that is used on it.
Balance Wheel
The main function is to raise and lower the needle through manual lab
our. It is used when an extremely thick piece of fabric is required to be
sewn. In the domestic sewing machine, It also helps to wind the sewin
g thread to the bobbin. It is situated on the right side of the machine.
Slide Plate
It is a rectangular shape that is situated beside the pressure foot, it helps th
e removal of the bobbin case without lifting the machine.
Feed Dog
It helps to pass the cloth through the machine in a forwarding direction
during the sewing.
Needle and Needle Bar
The main function of the needle is to form the stitch during sewin
g the cloth. The needle fits in the needle bar which holds the nee
dle with a small screw.
Pressure Foot
It is used to put pressure on the fabric during sewing. It helps to p
revent wrinkles that could mess up the stitch.
Power Switch
The sewing machine is operated sometimes by electricity and ma
nual labor. A power switch is used to supply the electricity to the
machine. Normally Power switch is on the right side of the machi
ne. The main function of the power switch is to turn on and off the
machine. In the modern sewing machine, it gives light to the user
to see properly when the machine is turned on.
Foot Pedal
It controls the speed of the sewing machine. If you apply mor
e pressure to the pedal you can sew faster.
Back Sew Button
Back sew is a button that is used to restitch over a very short
area to increase seam strength.
Bobbin Winder
The bobbin winder is used to wind bobbins with thread. It is located on
the top of the sewing machine, near the spool of thread.
