1. VERBAL TENSES: FROM PAST SIMPLE to PAST CONTINUOUS

2. VERBAL TENSES: By the time


By the time + Subject + PAST SIMPLE …., Subject + PAST PERFECT (had/3ªed)….

1. I missed the start of the film because I arrived late

3. The concert finished before I arrived there.

3. VERBAL TENSES: FROM PRESENT PERFECT to PAST SIMPLE.


(Be careful, there is ONE exception at the end of the page!)

GROUP 1: FROM Subject + STARTED/BEGAN + ING + period of time AGO to


Subject + HAVE/HAS BEEN + ING + FOR/SINCE + period of time
(It also works the other way round!) Examples:

- I started swimming five years ago / I began swimming five years ago
I have been swimming for five years.

- Lucy began studying English in 2018.


Lucy has been studying English since 2018/for two years

- She has been working here for two years.


She started working here two years ago.

GROUP 2: THE LAST TIME + Subject + PAST SIMPLE + WAS + period of time + AGO
Subject + LAST+ PAST SIMPLE + period of time
to S + HAVEN’T/HASN’T + 3rd column/-ED + FOR + period of time
(It also works the other way round!) Examples:

- The last time Mary went to the cinema was three months ago
Mary hasn’t gone to the cinema for three months

The last time they ate Chinese food was three years ago.

GROUP 3: Subject + HAVEN’T/HASN’T + 3rd column/-ED + FOR/SINCE + period of time

IT’S + period of time + SINCE + Subject + (LAST) + PAST SIMPLE + complements


(It also works the other way round!) Examples:

- She hasn’t studied maths for seven years.


It’s seven years since she (last) studied maths.

- It’s two days since she (last) went to the swimming pool.
She hasn’t gone to the swimming pool for two days.

GROUP 4: Subject + HAVEN’T/HASN’T + 3rd column/-ED + BEFORE


to IT’S/THIS THE FIRST TIME + Subject + HAVE/HAS + 3rd column/-ED
(It also works the other way round!) Examples:

- I have never been here before.


It’s the first time I have been here.

- This is the first time Stephen has eaten snails.

Sam has never travelled abroad / Sam hasn’t travelled abroad before.

4. The last time we went to the cinema was two months ago.
We haven’t gone to the cinema for two months.

5. I have been studying English since 5 o’clock


I started studying English ---hours ago.

6. It’s two days since I visited my aunt.


I haven’t visited my aunt for two days.

7. They have never worked in this place before.


It’s the first time they have worked in this place.

8. She hasn’t celebrated her birthday since 2010.


She last celebrated her birthday 13 years ago.

9. They haven’t travelled abroad since 2005


It’s 18 years since they (last) travelled abroad.

10. This is the first time John has eaten sushi
