Yousef Salman Poor - T5 Worksheet 5

This document is a student worksheet that discusses secondary storage devices and technologies. It contains tasks about identifying different storage devices as magnetic, optical, or solid state; the three main storage methods; how hard disk drives work; similarities and differences between vinyl records and CDs; and labeling parts of a flash memory cell. The student provides explanations for each task, identifying drive components, describing the hard drive reading process, noting vinyl and CD characteristics, and labeling the flash memory diagram.

Worksheet 5 Secondary storage

Unit 3 Computer architecture and storage

Name: Yousef Salman Poor. Class: 10U

Task 1
1. Look at the storage devices in the table below. For each one, tick whether it is magnetic,
optical, or solid-state.

Storage device Magnetic Optical Solid state

Hard disk drive X

Blu-ray X

CD ROM X

USB flash drive X

DVD RAM X

SSD hard drive X

SD card X

Floppy disk drive X

Backup tape drive X

2. There are three different methods that are used to store data.
Name the three different methods.
Method 1: File storage.

Method 2: Block Storage.

Method 3: Object Storage.

Task 2
Magnetic hard disks use a solid disk to store data.

(a) Complete the table below to explain the different parts of a magnetic hard disk.

Hard disk part Explanation

Drive head The driving mechanism for a conveyor.

Actuator A part of a device or machine that helps it to

achieve physical movements by converting energy,
often electrical, air, or hydraulic, into mechanical
force.
Drive spindle Which holds the hard drive's platters in
place.
Platter A circular magnetic plate that is used for
storing data in a hard disk.
Track A physical division of data in a disk drive

Sector The smallest physical storage unit on the disk,

(b) Describe the process involved in reading data from a hard disk.

The hard drive contains a spinning platter with a thin magnetic coating.
A "head" moves over the platter, writing 0's and 1's as tiny areas of
magnetic North or South on the platter. To read the data back, the head
goes to the same spot, notices the North and South spots flying by, and
so deduces the stored 0s and 1s.

Task 3
Music used to be commonly sorted on vinyl records before CDs. Both are still in use today.

Research both vinyl records and CDs. Make notes of the similarities and differences between
the two in the table below. The first similarity between the two has been given as an example.

Vinyl records CDs

Similarities

Task 4
The following shows a diagram of one memory cell inside a flash memory unit.

(a) Label the diagram to show:

● The isolation layers

● The floating gate

● The control gate

1st Box = Control Gate.
2nd Box = Isolation Layers.
3rd Box = Floating gate.
4th Box = Isolation Layers.

(b) How is it possible for such a flash memory unit to store data?

Information is stored in Memory Cells.
