Assignment 4 Spring2024

This document provides instructions for Assignment #4 in the MECH 412 Machine Design II course. It states that the assignment is a group project but each group must complete the work independently. Copying solutions is considered cheating. The assignment contains 5 multi-part questions relating to design and analysis of worm gears, including calculations of lead angle, speed ratio, forces, and bearing loads. Students must show all work clearly with sketches, equations, and units.

MECH 412- Machine Design II

Spring 2024
Assignment # 4 (CLO 3)
Due: Monday February 19, 2024

Notes and Instructions:

• This is a group assignment. Students in a group must contribute equally in completing the
assignment problems. Intergroup discussion is allowed but at the end, each group must
complete the assignment independently.
• Copying from the textbook solution manual, from another group’s work or from elsewhere is
strictly forbidden and it will be considered as cheating and will be penalized heavily.
• All details of calculations, including intermediate sketches and well-labelled free-body
diagrams, as needed, together with equations of equilibrium and other necessary equations,
must be clearly presented.

Questions:

1. A double-threaded worm gear has a worm pitch diameter of 50 mm, a pitch of 10 mm, and a
speed reduction of 25:1. Find the lead angle, the worm gear diameter, and the center distance
2. A 2-tooth case hardened steei worm has a lead of 20 mm and a 16 mm pitch diameter. It
rotates with a speed of 1800 rpm and drives a bronze worm gear having a 8 mm in face
width, 20 teeth and 20 normal pressure angle. Find:
(a) axial pitch of the worm
(b) the speed ratio
(c) centre distance and
(d) angular speed of the worm gear
(e) If the worm drive transmits 8 kW power, compute force
components on the worm and on the gear. Assume no
friction
(f) Repeat question (e) taking the friction into consideration
and your answers with those obtained in (e).

3. A wormgear set has a single-thread worm with a pitch diameter of 1.250 in, a diametral pitch
of 10, and a normal pressure angle of 14.5°. If the worm meshes with a wormgear having 40
teeth and a face width of 0.625 in.
(a) Compute the gear pitch diameter, the center distance, and the velocity ratio.
(b) If the wormgear set is transmitting 924 lb.in of torque at its output shaft, which is rotating
at 30 rpm, compute forces on the gear, efficiency, input speed, and input power,
4. For a worm gear speed reducer shown in the Figure, the lead angle is 10 and the pressure
angle is 25. If the tangential worm gear force is 2000 N, find (a) the axial and radial forces
on the worm and gear, and (b) the bearing loads. Assume the friction coefficient is 0.05.
5. A right-hand single-tooth hardened-steel worm has a catalog rating of 2000 W at 600 rev/min
when meshed with a 48-tooth cast-iron gear. The axial pitch of the worm is 25 mm, the
normal pressure angle is 14½°, the pitch diameter of the worm is 100 mm, and the face
widths of the worm and gear are, respectively, 100 mm and 50 mm. Bearings are centered at
locations A and B on the worm shaft. Determine which should be the thrust bearing (so that
the axial load in the shaft is in compression), and find the magnitudes and directions of the
forces exerted by both bearings.
