STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Introduction
I am writing to express my sincere intent to pursue a Global Human Resource Management MSc at
your esteemed institution. My name is M. W. H. M. R. C. Batuwewegedara, a Sri Lankan citizen, born
on February 1, 2002, making me 22 years old. In my family, I am the youngest, with my brother, W.
M. R. T. U. Eriyawa, being the eldest. Our parents, J. B. Batuwewegedara and A. C. Perera, have been
pivotal figures in shaping our lives.

My father has had a diverse professional journey, serving in various capacities in different
organisations starting as a Sales Representative at Capital Maharaja Group until the head of sales and
marketing for Access Healthcare at Access Group of companies. His expertise extends to international
realms, where he has held the positions of Manager of Sales and Marketing for Agfa Gevaert Group
and Siemens Healthineers, representing Sri Lanka and Maldives. Presently he holds the position of
Chairman at United Glass Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, a service-providing limited liability company.

On the other hand, my mother, A. C. Perera, has devoted her time and efforts to being a dedicated
housewife. Also, my brother, W. M. R. T. U. Eriyawa, has ventured into entrepreneurship,
successfully operating his own business in the IT field, and is also happily married. Growing up in
such an environment has instilled in me a strong commitment to excellence and personal growth.

Academic and Employment Background

From primary to ordinary-level education, I attended the Royal Institute International School
Colombo. I did my General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination in 2018 and
obtained one Distinction (A) pass, one Very Good (B) pass, and six Credit (C) passes across various
subjects. Particularly noteworthy is my Distinction (A) pass in English Language. However, I
encountered a challenge with one subject. Demonstrating my commitment to overcoming academic
obstacles, in 2019, I successfully retook the subject, earning an Ordinary (S) pass.

After completing my ordinary-level education, I took a step towards fostering a comprehensive

understanding of international relations. In 2019, I enrolled in the Certificate in International
Relations programme at Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies. I emerged from it in 2020,
having completed the curriculum with a commendable merit grade. Building upon this strong
foundation, I pursued a Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business (Human
Resource Management) at the Human Resource Management Institute. I completed this program in
February 2023, achieving a merit grade. To further elevate my academic qualifications, I embarked on
the Top-Up BSc in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behaviour, awarded by the
University of Northampton, UK. This advanced program, awarded in November 2023, represented a
pinnacle in my academic journey, culminating in a second-class upper division.

In 2023, I embarked on an internship as a Human Resource Intern at the National Development Bank
PLC, for four months (from March to June 2023) to gain invaluable insights into the intricacies of
HRM. Currently, I am employed as a Deputy Analyst – Talent Acquisition at Accenture Lanka Pvt
Ltd, a position I have held since February 2024. At the age of 22, I proudly attained a significant
milestone in my academic journey, demonstrating not only my exceptional dedication but also
affirming my capability to ascend to greater heights.

Beyond academics, my interest spans the realms of volunteering and diplomatic affairs. I had the
privilege of participating as a delegate in the International Model United Nations online conference
46.0, an experience that deepened my understanding of international relations and fostered diplomatic

skills. In addition, I have taken an active leadership role as the Director of Community Service at the
Rotaract Club of Central Campus in RID 3220, Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Why I Chose the United Kingdom and University of Westminster for My

Higher Studies
I have chosen the United Kingdom for my higher studies for a multitude of compelling reasons. The
prospect of studying abroad has always been an enticing challenge for me, pushing me to step out of
my comfort zone and strive for personal growth and achievement. Moreover, the unparalleled quality
of education offered in the UK, surpassing the standards in Sri Lanka, played a pivotal role in my
decision. With the UK consistently ranking among the top 10 countries for education, I am confident
that the academic environment will provide me with an exceptional learning experience.

Beyond academics, the UK’s status as one of the most developed countries in the world opens a world
of diversity and cultural richness. The opportunity to immerse myself in various cultures and broaden
my global perspective is something I eagerly anticipate. On a more personal note, my admiration for
the Royal Family adds another layer to my excitement. Being a huge fan, the chance to visit
Buckingham Palace and explore the Queen’s Gallery has been a longstanding dream of mine.

I’m excited to embark on my academic journey at the University of Westminster, drawn by its

learning but also equips students like myself with real world-skills and insights, enhancing our
employability and readiness for the professional world.

Moreover, the University of Westminster’s recent Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework
(TEF) 2023 underscores its commitment to delivering high-quality education across various domains.
This recognition affirms the university’s dedication to excellence in teaching, learning, and overall
student experience, further solidifying my confidence in choosing Westminster for my higher studies.

Reasons for Selecting Human Resource Management (MA) at University of

Westminster
I chose the Human Resource Management (MA) program at the University of Westminster for several
reasons. Firstly, the program’s accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development
(CIPD) is a testament to its quality and alignment with industry standards. The fact that it maps and
aligns to the CIPD Profession Map core knowledge and core behaviour standards at Chartered Level
assures me that I’ll be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of HRM.
Moreover, the University of Westminster’s commitment to supporting its students’ professional
development is evident in its initiative to cover the joining fee and initial CIPD membership fee. This
not only grants me access to invaluable CIPD knowledge resources but also allows me to network
with professionals in the field through the strong worldwide member network.

Furthermore, being taught by accomplished professionals with specialist HR knowledge and

experience adds immense value to the program. Their dual expertise in academia and practical HR

settings ensures that I receive practical insights and theoretical foundations that are relevant and
applicable in real-world scenarios.

The workshop series focusing on essential skills such as interviewing, negotiation, counseling, and
disciplinary handling is particularly appealing as it provides hands-on training in areas crucial for HR
professionals. Additionally, the option to undertake an internship offers valuable practical experience,
further enhancing my employability and understanding of the field. This program stands out to me as
the ideal choice due to its accreditation, professional support, practical focus and flexibility in
curriculum design.

My Career Goals and Plans After the Degree Program

Upon completion of my degree program, my career goals align with my longstanding aspiration to
work as an HR Director or Chief Human Resource Officer for John Keells Holdings, a prestigious
multinational company in Sri Lanka. This organisation has always been at the forefront of my career
ambitions due to its global presence and reputation.

In the short term, I aim to collaborate with my father, leveraging my newfound skills and knowledge
to assist in managing the human capital of his business. I believe that the comprehensive education I
receive will not only equip me with the necessary skills for these roles but also enhance my
employability in companies that have been part of my professional dreams.

Furthermore, obtaining a British degree is strategically advantageous in Sri Lanka, as it not only
reflects my commitment to education but also signals a potential for success. The global recognition
of my British degree further augments my prospects for a fulfilling and successful career on an
international scale.

Conclusion
To conclude, my primary motivation for pursuing studies in the UK stems from a sincere desire to
access a world-class education, as Sri Lanka’s education system may not fully meet the global
demands. I am enthusiastic to contribute to the University of Westminster community and eagerly
await a positive response to my application for an offer letter, anticipating the opportunity to embark
on this transformative academic journey with your esteemed institution.

Thank You
Yours Sincerely,
