The concept and characteristics of the project
There have been many definitions of the concept of the project,
according to the background of the person as well as the purpose for
which the project will be established, and we will mention them, for
example, but not limited to:
 A project is a temporary organizational duty undertaken to
create a distinct product or service.
 A project is a set of interrelated actions carried out in an orderly
manner with a clearly defined starting point and end point so as
to achieve some specific outcome required to meet the strategic
needs of the organization at the present time.
 An integrated set of activities and operations that consume
specific resources, from which other returns, monetary or non-
monetary, are expected.
 The project is a goal to be achieved, with the involvement of
several parties within a specific framework, during a certain
period of time using limited means and requires the adoption of
appropriate methodology and tools.

The Whatever the size of the project, it always has the
following components:
1. Specific outputs (products or outcomes).
2. Clear start and end dates, which are the start and end dates
of the project's work.
3. Specific estimated budgets, which are the amount of
funding, personnel, equipment, facilities and information
required.

Figure (2) shows that each of the elements affects the other.
Increasing the required outputs may require an increase in time (late
end date) or more resources. Providing the completion date may
necessitate reducing the results achieved or increasing the project
expenses (to exceed the established budgets) by paying additional wages
to project workers, and within the framework of this three-part
definition of the project, you perform the work to achieve the desired
results.

The projects vary greatly in terms of shape and size.
Projects may be large or small:
1. The construction of a new subway line, which may cost more than one billion
dollars and take 10 to 15 years, is considered a project.
2. Preparing a report with monthly sales figures, which may take one day, is
considered a project.
The project may include a large number of individuals or only one person:
1. Training the 10,000 company workers on a new policy of affirmative action is a
project.
2. Rearranging furniture and appliances in your office is also a project.
The project may be formally or informally planned:
1. Some projects are included in the company's annual plan and need to agree on
everything that will be done, all the people that will be hired and all the resources
that will be utilized.
2. Some other projects are given to you orally, with no mention of budget or
additional staff, and you are expected to do whatever is necessary to finish these
projects.
The project may be followed up formally or informally:
1. On some projects, all hours worked are recorded on timesheets and all
money spent is identified separately in the company's financial system.
2. There are some projects, where no working hours are ever recorded and
any expenses are considered part of the company's operating budget.
Projects may be implemented for external or internal clients:
1. As it is legitimate to repair a part of a machine that your company sold to a
customer.
2. Writing an article for the company's internal newspaper is also a project.
The project may be defined by a legal contract or an informal agreement:
1. The contract signed between you and a customer to build a house for him
indicates the existence of a project.
2. An informal undertaking that you will introduce a new set of software to
your colleague's computer also denotes a project.
