• involves starting with an assumption,
comparing it to measured values, making corrections, and repeating the process
until convergence
Not used in commercial scanners initially due to limitations:
• Difficulty obtaining accurate ray sums (quantum noise, patient motion).
• Time-consuming as iteration after obtaining all projection datasets.
• Need for more projection datasets than pixels.

• Filtered back-projection, also
known as convolution method,
removes starlike blurring in
images by generating filtered
profiles, back-projecting, and
canceling negative and
positive components.

• Used in MRI but not in modern CT scanners due to its more
complex mathematics.
• It transforms a radiograph into a frequency domain image, which can
be manipulated and used for digital image processing.

• The image reconstruction algorithms for single-slice conventional CT
use a filtered back-projection algorithm with interpolation for a 360-
degree rotation, requiring a planar section computation before
image generation.

• MSCT uses multiple detector rows for larger volume coverage and
faster speed, requiring new algorithms. For CT scanners with four
rows, MSCT algorithms include spiral/helical scanning,
longitudinal interpolation, and fan beam reconstruction.

• 3D imaging applications are gaining popularity due to the use of
surface and volumetric reconstruction algorithms from
computer graphics and visual perception science.
