The purpose of the Report Card is to inform parents and guardians of their child’s progress, in a course, at the
time of publication. The marks and comments will reflect a student’s demonstrated understanding of the
Learning Standards (Curricular and Content), as organized through the sets of Core Competencies which include
communication, thinking, and personal and social proficiencies.

This report contains the final mark for Semester 1 (previously published) and the second of three reports for
linear courses.

In the Grade 8 rotation of Arts Education, students are introduced to the elements and principles of art. Our
projects focused on pattern, balance, value, and colour. Notable creations included a rose window and a
monochromatic abstract painting. Students constructed a digital portfolio of their artwork throughout the
rotation by photographing their final designs and posting their pieces on our Google Classroom platform. Louis's
overall performance regarding the learning goals in Art Education 8 is at an extending level. He demonstrated
good work habits in class. Louis's Two-Point Perspective street drawing was very well done!

CAREER EDUCATION 8
Sentinel Secondary
Ian Braidek
https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/career-education/8
The Careers 8 program is broadly directed into 3 streams: self-assessment and understanding, membership in
larger society, and pre-employment skills. The streams are not mutually exclusive and frequently intersect or
overlap. For instance, the assignment called "Terry Fox had a Super Power - So do you!" asks students to consider
their personality trait inventory and consider more deeply their personal goals and values. With respect to self-
assessment they completed personality surveys and created a first resume that required them to look at places in
their lives where they have already developed skills. We've had two groups of guest speakers and at least two
additional assignments where students were introduced to topics which can be sensitive but are important to
their eventual entry into a larger society: mental health, gender issues, and sexual violence prevention.
Interwoven with these are skills and topics in self-care, leadership and inclusion all of which help these students
move with confidence (and time) into a new world of working people. Pre-employment skills have been
represented so far in our initial resumes and a goal-setting exercise. This stream will be more directly targeted in
the last 3 assignments of this course. Assessment for Career Education 8 will not include either a percentage
mark or a letter grade. Student progress in the course will be communicated using the descriptors: emerging,
developing, proficient or extending. So far students have been given ten assignments to complete and have met
seven times in person.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 8 C+

Sentinel Secondary
Mr. Hugh Wilson Joseph Huh Ms. Megan Gray

This term in Grade 8 Language Arts, we completed our unit on "The Land" with a "verbal-visual essay" that had
several goals. Each piece of writing from the unit was discussed in a brief paragraph, with a focus on succinct,
controlled writing that had one or two big ideas. The assignment also asked the students to choose meaningful
quotes, find or create symbolic images, and write a "synthesis" paragraph. The purpose of the latter was for the
students to find a new understanding of the concept of land based on their previous writings. Did they learn or
realize something new from the unit?

Following, this we did a unit on "October Sky" a film based on the experiences of NASA rocket scientist Homer
Hickam. Here, our focuses were on summarizing, setting and conflict in literature. Again, the final product was a
project that asked for three succinct paragraphs and symbolic images (in other words, images that represented
ideas and not simply places, people or events.) We have since begun a unit on poetry which will focus on analysis,
response and original work by the students. Later in this final term we will transition to essays.

I encourage a few overarching skills in my grade 8 classes: writing with an understanding of sentence and
paragraph structure, appreciating the value of note taking, and writing succinct paragraphs. Although we do not
assign marks for work habits or behaviour, each is crucial to learning. I ask my students to take notes (even if they
may appear later in Google Classroom.) I also want them to understand when to get down to work and use their
class time effectively. I encourage each student to approach me with first drafts of their work and to use valuable
X-block time to hone their writing. Very few of us are good first draft writers and we can all can benefit from
editing and re-writing. That said, it takes many students some time to understand this habit of mind.

As always, I truly enjoy teaching Louis. He always brightens my day when he walks in the class. However, it was an
inconsistent term for Louis. His level of achievement remains the same. He often handed his work in late and did
not come to me for help with early drafts so he could receive feedback. Please make a point of doing that over the
next few months! Let's have a great final term, Louis!

Work habit: S

During this reporting period, we completed units of study on proportional reasoning, and linear
relations/equations. Louis has shown an extending level of ability to analyze and apply mathematical ideas over
the past few months. He has been able to utilize a variety of strategies to problem solve in abstract and
contextualized situations. Louis is beginning to represent their mathematical thinking through providing
reasoning and supporting diagrams. He very seldomly perseveres to pose new mathematical problems and
questions. I recommend making a stronger effort to communicate mathematical thinking by providing clear
explanations and accompanying visuals to represent ideas.

While instructed by Mr. Huh, the Social Studies 8 class finished their studies of the Silk Road with an inquiry-based
project. This project challenged students to consider how the Silk Road affected humanity in the context of
Globalization. The course then transitioned to a brief unit on the Age of Exploration, overviewing the effects that
European colonization had on the regions of Africa and the Americas especially.

Work Habit:

assignments in a more timely manner.

CHOIR 8 B

Though this course is named Choir, it was more of a music appreciation course. The focus was on the
fundamentals of music theory, including note values, names, dynamics, and music history. Students did a series
of worksheets, a presentation on a musical artist, drew their musical interpretation of a piece of music, studied
musical genres, and learned sign language. In so doing, the goal was to have students gain a better appreciation
of music and all it has to offer physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Though very social and off-task at times, Louis was a pleasure to teach. Louis demonstrated good attitude, skill,
and overall participation in this course.

Louis could improve his work habits remaining quiet and focused during instruction as well as working time. He
is a kind and pleasant student.

Students in the ceramics rotation worked on ideation and design, creating sketches and plans for two projects: a
cake box and pinch pot head or face. Students used the applied skills and technologies of ceramics in addition to
learning how to operate safely in a studio environment.

Louis produced a cake and pinch pot this quarter. With more care and attention to the task at hand, his work
could have held together better and have been finished in a more polished manner.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT 8: INTERMEDIATE

Sentinel Secondary
Mr. Hugh Wilson

In ELD 8 this semester, we continued to focus on structured writing -- structured sentences and paragraphs. The
students were asked to read and view sources and answer questions that reflected content and showed
understanding. I asked the students to practise integrating quotes into their answers. We finished reading the
book "Seedfolks" about a community garden and the students completed a project that focused on the characters
and their contributions to the community. We watched the Pixar film "Bao" an animated short video about "empty
nest syndrome" and asked the students to respond. We also read part of a short biography of Shakespeare which
introduced the students to some of the material and ideas they will encounter in future grades. In all cases, the
students practiced reading, note taking, answering and responding.

It has been a pleasure getting to know Louis in summer school and this semester in our ELD 8 class. Louis has a
warm personality and a great sense of humour -- I very much enjoy having him in class. Louis has a strong grasp
of English. He writes with depth and detail, but he does need to take the time to re-read and edit his work to look
for small errors in spelling and sentence structure. Louis's writing, listening, speaking and listening levels are all
bridging (5).

Louis's work habits are satisfactory and I would like to see him ensure he uses his class time well and gets all his
work in on time. He will not have a dedicated language learning class in semester 2, so I strongly encourage him
to come for assistance on Thursday X-blocks in portable 1 where Mr. McLean and I will be available to offer
language learning help. Have a great semester 2, Louis :)
