Topic 1 – Pets and animals

Part 1
1. What’s your favorite animal?

Hm... I would have to say whales. I’ve been fascinated by them ever since I
was a child. There’s just something so majestic about them, maybe it has to
do with (is related to) their size. Plus, they are highly intelligent and
family-oriented creatures. It’s believed that they even speak their own
languages!

2. Do you like to see animals in the zoo?

Not really. Sure, it’s interesting to see them, but I also feel sad seeing them
in cages. In my opinion, wild animals should not be in captivity
(caged) unless they have some sort of injury. Actually, I think it’s a shame
that humans feel the need to see nature so badly that they cage them and
charge people to enter.

3. Do you keep a pet?

Not currently. I would like to, but I’m actually not allowed to because of my
apartment regulations. Additionally, I live in a small studio apartment so it
wouldn’t be the best environment for a pet, unless it were a cat or small
animal. Moreover, I work full-time so I wouldn’t have a lot of time to tend to
the pet.

4. Did you have a pet when you were young?

Yes, I did. My parents were both animal lovers (people who love
animals), so we always had a house full of pets. My first pet was a lizard
named Charlie, then onto my very own black kitten named Pal. Although I
played too hard with my pets and made them annoyed, I still got a lot of joy
from them. Additionally, I also learned a sense of responsibility from a
young age.

5.What pet will you have later?

Hmm. I think I want a dog and a cat. When I think about it more, I cannot
imagine having a family without a dog for my children one day. I can
envision them playing with a Golden Retriever or a Labrador retriever, as
they have a friendly demeanor (way of being). On the other hand, I’m
more of a cat person (a person who prefers cats to dogs), so I would
like to have one as well.

6. If you raise children in the future, will you allow them to keep a
pet?

Yes, for sure. I would like to make their dreams come true of having a pet,
as many children want. Moreover, I feel a pet is a great addition to a family.
Lastly, I think allowing them to have a pet is a good opportunity for them to
begin to have a sense of responsibility when it comes to walking their pet,
changing the litter box (the box where cats go to the bathroom),
feeding them, cleaning the cage, etc.

Sample Answer

When I was little, my grandmother’s home was my second family as I came

to visit her every day without fail. Of course, I love her so much, but another
reason why I loved coming to see her was her little puppy. My grandmother
got the puppy from her neighbor as far as I can remember. The first time I
saw it, I fell in love with the puppy’s adorable eyes. I named it Jerry because
I like Jerry Mouse. Since the day Jerry came to me, my life was turned
upside down.

As I went about my normal routine, I decided to leave aside at least one

hour a day to play with Jerry. Also, I tried to change my daily schedule to fit
Jerry’s. Every day after school, instead of going home and watching TV, I
headed to my grandmother’s house and took Jerry outside. Jerry was
an outgoing and a little bit scrappy puppy so whenever we went out, many
people would come and greet her.

As many other dogs, Jerry loved to chew so I needed to help my

grandmother put everything out of her reach. It was a bit annoying at first,
but then when our home became “puppy-proof”, nothing happened with our
stuff. I even joined the local dog lovers’ community at my town and
attended meetings every other week.

To be honest, my life was completely reversed for the better because of

Jerry. Even though Jerry left us a long time ago, I still miss her so much and
really want to get another cute puppy like her in the near future.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Animals

1. In what ways are humans different from other animals?

Humans and other animals vary primarily in our capacity for complex
reasoning, our use of complex language, and our capacity for problem-
solving. Only humans possess the capacity for creation or the capacity to
experience joy or sorrow. Humans can perform many of these tasks because
of our highly evolved brains.

2. What are the main roles of animals in your country?

I have to say that animals play a crucial role in our society. We have
many mythological animals that you can see in ancient tales. They are part
of our religious beliefs and perspectives on life. For example, people’s
longing to be liberated from constraints and limitations is reflected in the
dragon. The lunar calendar’s 12 months are also represented by pictures of
the 12 zodiac animals.

3. Do you think modern farming methods are cruel to animals?

I believe so. In an effort to increase productivity, animals are mistreated and

crowded together in factory farming. Factory-farmed animals
are jammed together in barren pens, crates, or cages in order to save space,
which prevents them from engaging in typical behaviors like nesting or
foraging. As a result, the animals frequently hurt each other to relieve their
boredom, irritation, and stress.
