Module Objectives:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature and processes of child development.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the major theories of development and learning, particularly in relation to children 0-
8 years of age.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, cognitive, moral and language development in young
children.
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of social and emotional development in young children.
5. Analyze the influences of families, and social and cultural contexts on young children’s development

Module outcomes:
At the end of the module the students demonstrate an ability to:-
1. Know the factors in nature and nurture that influence development.
2. Acquire knowledge regarding the different domains of development: Physical, Social, Cognitive, Emotional and
Language.
3. Recognize normal development with the development of children with special needs.
4. Understand the basic theories which may influence child development.
5. Conduct observation of children and relate the information collected to child development.

Synopsis:
In this module, students are expose to the developmental domains of children 0-8 years. The domains emphasized
on are physical, language, cognitive, social and emotional. Students are given an insight into the biological and
environmental factors related to children’s development, the milestones to be identified in different domains and
ages. Students are also exposed to strategies in promoting children’s developmental domains and the importance of
developmentally appropriate practices. Theories related to children’s development are visited to enable students to
have a better insight into factors that promote and those that inhibit development in young children.
