1 Scope
This standard defines quality requirements on final coatings for uncoated and coated steel and alu‐
minum materials used in body construction, so-called prelubes, prelubes 2 and hot melts according
to the VDA 230-213 definitions.
With restrictions or extensions with respect to material or usage, this standard is also valid for
sheet metal blank washing oils, drawing compounds, and general-type slushing oils.
NOTE 1: The agents mentioned above are used as temporary corrosion protection and for tribolog‐
ical support during the forming process of coated and uncoated sheets, assembled sheet metal
blanks made of steel or aluminum, and other semi-finished products; they also find application as
temporary corrosion protection for individual parts and assemblies.

2 Description
Forming lubricant according to QP A001

3 Requirements

3.1 General requirements

Coated and uncoated sheets made of steel or aluminum, assembled sheet metal blanks, and semi-
finished products that are delivered to the Group must be provided with corrosion protection.
The final coating must not disturb the processes when applying it, e.g., in the steel mill, or in the
downstream production stages during the manufacture of vehicles and vehicle parts.
The composition must meet the requirements of Volkswagen standard VW 91100.
The steel suppliers must use only prelubes and hot melts that have achieved status 4 (recommen‐
ded for introduction into production by the Press Shop Forum and VDA "Forming Lubricants" Work‐
ing Group (Presswerksforum und VDA-Arbeitskreis "Umformschmierstoffe")
Page 3
QP A001: 2013-03

3.1.1 Sequence (for prelubes and hot melts only)

3.1.1.1 Status 1
Verification of fulfillment of the requirements listed below, tested by the lubricant supplier according
to VDA 230-213. See appendix A.

3.1.1.2 Status 2
Recommendation for experimental use by the Press Shop Forum and VDA "Forming Lubricants"
Working Group.

3.1.1.3 Status 3
Testing under operating conditions including compatibility with locally specific adhesives and mate‐
rials for cathodic electrocoating by automobile manufacturers.

3.1.1.4 Status 4
Recommended for introduction into production by the Press Shop Forum and VDA "Forming Lubri‐
cants" Working Group.
Until revoked, the standard oils that can be used are "Anticorit PL 3802-39 S" from Fuchs Europe
Schmierstoffe GmbH in Mannheim and "Multidraw PL 61" from Zeller+Gmelin in Eislingen.
For auxiliary drawing agents that are used in the press shop for forming purposes, the sequence
applies analogously. Status 1 must be fulfilled by the supplier before further compatibility examina‐
tions are carried out with locally specific adhesives, cathodic electrocoating materials, or cleaning
agents. Further application-related tests must be carried out if required.

3.2 Physico-chemical properties

The physico-chemical data, such as density, viscosity, melting range (for hot melts only), flash
point, degree of purity, and water and aromatics content, must be specified by the supplier of the
lubricant.

3.3 Anti-corrosion properties

In order to ensure that the subsequent process chain will go by smoothly, it is absolutely necessary
that a corrosion-free surface be maintained throughout the entire period from production, transpor‐
tation, and storage, during and after forming, to complete removal during pre-treatment.

3.3.1 In the sheet-stack

Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.4.7,
Test duration: 90 test cycles.
Requirements:
– Surfaces free of discoloration and corrosion.
– Characteristic values better than or, at a minimum, equal to standard slushing oil.
Page 4
QP A001: 2013-03

3.3.2 In the condensed water test climate

Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.4.8,
Test duration: 4 test cycles (based on DIN EN ISO 6270-2).
Requirements according to section 3.3.1.

3.3.3 During indoor weathering with average load

Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.4.9,
In Central European temperate climate without sea vicinity as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section
5.4.9.3.1,
Test duration: 12 weeks.
Requirements according to section 3.3.1.

3.3.4 During indoor weathering with increased load

Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.4.9,
e.g., in a Mediterranean area in the South of Europe with a warm sea climate according to
VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.4.9.3.2,
Test duration: 9 days.
Requirements according to section 3.3.1.

3.3.5 During so-called open-air weathering (as an alternative to Section 3.3.3)

Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.4.10,
Test duration: 12 weeks.
Requirements according to section 3.3.1.

3.4 Miscibility
Prelubes are tested as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.5.
If the prelube or hot melt is mixed with products of the same type and/or with sheet metal blank
washing oils and drawing compounds, no irreversible sedimentation, turbidity, gelatinous deposits,
solidification, etc. must occur. Changes of viscosity are only permitted to occur within the scope of
mixed viscosity resulting from differing viscosities of individual components (determination by a
mixture table in the viscosity/temperature diagram, for example). Further viscosity changes must
be indicated.

3.5 Friction properties

Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.6.
Coefficients of friction of the prelubes, hot melts, and auxiliary drawing agents must be better than
or, at a minimum, equal to those of the standard oil.
For the Prelube 2 product class, VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.6.4.
Page 5
QP A001: 2013-03

3.6 Inhibition of running (not for hot melts)

Inhibition of running must be proven by means of suitable test methods (e.g., VDA 230-213:
2008-11, section 5.7).
In practice, oil running when stored in the coil or in the sheet stack (especially in summer) must be
minimized by inhibition of running.
The accumulation of oil on the lower edge of stored pressed parts must not exceed 3,0 g/m2, as
this might disturb bonding (assembly) or the painting process by oil running from folds, laps, or
beads.

3.7 Compatibility with adhesive

3.7.1 Preliminary testing

The oil supplier must conduct preliminary tests as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.8, and as
per PV 12.30, and document that these tests "have been passed".

3.7.2 Specific testing

Because of the multitude of bonding materials used, specific compatibility with locally used adhe‐
sives must be verified, possibly with special test methods, in cooperation among the oil supplier,
adhesive supplier, and adhesive processor (see also section 3.1.1.3, status 3).

3.8 Compatibility with cathodic electrocoat

3.8.1 Preliminary testing

Residues of forming lubricants, e.g., in cavities or flanges, that were not removed during the pre‐
treatment must not impair the downstream painting process.
Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.9.
The number of spreading defects per dm2 (blisters and pinpricks are considered equivalent to cra‐
ters) must be less than or, at most, equal to that for the standard prelube.

3.8.2 Specific testing

Because of the multitude of cathodic electrocoating materials used, specific compatibility with local‐
ly used cathodic electrocoating materials must be verified, possibly with special test methods, in
cooperation among the oil supplier, cathodic electrocoating material supplier, and the party respon‐
sible for cathodic electrocoating (see section 3.1.1.3, status 3).

3.9 Ban on substances that impair the paint wetting ability

The products concerned here (general-type slushing oils) must be free of substances (e.g., sili‐
cone, polytetrafluoroethylene) that lead to disturbances, e.g., in the form of craters, during paint
wetting or spreading.
Testing is performed according to PV 3.10.7.
Page 6
QP A001: 2013-03

3.10 Removability
All auxiliary process materials used must be removed from the surface to the extent possible in or‐
der to avoid disturbances in the downstream process steps, e.g., during phosphating.
Testing as per VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.10.
After the following three load types, the evaluation must not reveal any negative results:
– After new oiling
– After completion of the corrosion-protection tests (12 weeks of open-air weathering)
– After 13 min at (165 ±2) °C object temperature.

3.11 Suitability for application

It must be verified that the oils in question are applicable under real-world conditions with electro‐
static application methods. The locally used oiling systems in each case must be taken into consid‐
eration.

3.12 Degree of oiling

In principle, the total quantity of all oiling operations must not exceed 3 g/m2. In exceptional cases
and following consultation, this limit may be increased to 4 g/m2. This applies to all areas of the
product and must not be seen as an average value. Further restrictions to the (overall) degree of
oiling are defined in sheet labels, Technical Supply Specifications or component drawings and
must be considered with priority.
The application methods and film weight/the products' degree of oiling must ensure that the parts
being protected will have a uniformly continuous oil film on their surface. They must also ensure
that processing will not be obstructed or made more difficult due to the oil film being too thick (e.g.,
adhesion, oil vapors during welding, etc.).
Always observe and evaluate all effects relating to the resulting properties (e.g., a low film weight
can impair corrosion protection and friction behavior, and a high film weight can lead to undesired
oil running from the stored coils as well as impairment of compatibility with adhesives and remova‐
bility).

3.13 Trouble-free water treatment

When the hot melt is introduced into production, the hot melt supplier must prove trouble-free water
treatment using ultrafiltration (UF), VDA 230-213: 2008-11, section 5.11.
Verification can take place at the supplier of the UF membrane, the supplier of the cleaner chemi‐
cals, or in a suitable separate test facility. The test conditions must be agreed upon with the corre‐
sponding using plants.

3.14 Product lists of released materials

Appendix B contains the product lists of released materials for the Audi, Skoda, and Volkswagen
brands.
