Sample Numericals Trignometric Levelling + Curves

This document contains numerical problems related to trigonometric leveling, circular curves, and curve setting out. In the first problem, measurements are given to determine the elevation of a building above a point. The reduced level of the building is calculated. The second problem involves using angle and distance measurements taken with a theodolite to calculate the elevation of a tower top. The third problem provides data from two instrument stations and asks to calculate the reduced level of the top of a tower. The fourth problem gives observations from two instrument stations and asks to determine the reduced level of the top of a ten-storey building. The remaining problems involve setting out circular curves, calculating offsets,

Numerical Trigonometric Levelling

Q. 1
To determine the elevation of building p above point B in the figure, the following measurements
were made: b=50.00 m, hiB=1.24 m, hiA =0.94 m, angle 2 = 13.125o , angle 1 = 18.626o . The
instrument in the two positions was at the same level. Compute the reduce level of P.

Solution:
hd = hiB-hiA = 1.24-0.94=0.30
𝐷 = 0.3+50 tan(13.125) tan 18.626 −tan(13.125) =115.12
h2 = D tan(2 ) 165.12 tan (13.125) =38.50
RL of P = RL of BM + hi + h1 +CR (CR combined correction for curvature and refraction)
Q2
A theodolite was setup at a distance of 130 m from a tower. The angle of elevation to the top was
700. The staff reading with horizontal line of sight is 1.5 m. If the elevation of Instrument axis is
100, find elevation of top tower.
Hint
Staff height (hi) = 1.5
Calculate V such as
V = 130 tan 70.
Elevation of top = Elevation of instrument station + hi+ V
Q. 3
Calculate reduce level of the top of the tower from the following data
Instrument Reading on Angle
Station BM
A 1.75 m 150
B 2.10 m 110

R.L of B.M is 100.0m and observation are taken with the line of sight horizontal. AB = 50 m A,
B and the top of tower are in the same vertical plane. Instrument near the object is A and other is
B.
Self-Practice
Hint: Use formula of the case (Instrument near to the object is lower than the other)
Q4
To obtain R.L of top of a ten storeyed building following observation were taken.
Instrument Reading on Angle
Station BM
A 2.45 m 130
B 1.20 m 120

RL of bench mark is 500 m. distance between A and B is 50 m A, B, B.M and the building are in
same vertical plane.
Self-Practice
Hint: Use formula of the case (Instrument near to the object is higher than the other)
Numerical Curves
Q 1. Two straights intersect at chainage 2056.44 ft and the angle of intersection is 1300. If
the radius of the simple curve to be introduced is 50 m, set out the curve by offsets from
long chord for 5m interval. find the following:
(i) Chainage of the point of commencement
(ii) Chainage at point of tangency
(iii) Length of the long chord

Solution:
Chainage at the point of intersection = 2056.44 ft
Angle of intersection = 1300
Deflection angle ( ) = 1800 - 1300 = 500
Radius of curve (R) = 50 m.
𝑅𝑡𝑎𝑛∆
Tangent Length T= = 23.31 ft
2

Length of the curve (l) = 𝑅∆ ∗ 𝜋/180 = 43.61

Chainage at point of curve (T1) = Chainage at the point of intersection – tangent length =
2056.44 – 23.31 = 2033.13 ft
Chainage at point of tangency (T2) = Chainage at point of curve (T1) + Length of curve =
2033.12 + 42.5 = 2075.62 m
OR
Chainage at point of tangency = Chainage at point of curve + 2(length of tangent)= 2079.76
OR
Chainage at point of tangency = Chainage at the point of intersection+ Length of curve= 2079.75

Length of Long chord (L) = T1T2 = 2𝑅𝑆𝑖𝑛 ∆/2

Starting from centre of long chord, for offset distances at 5 m interval, offsets are
Q: 2 Determine the ordinates of the points on a circular curve having a long chord of 100 ft
and a versed sine of 5 ft. The ordinates are to be measured from the long chord at an
interval of 5 ft.
Solution:
Length of long chord (L) = 100 ft
Versed sine (O0) = 5 ft
Interval = 10 ft

Q 3: If the approximate perpendicular offset for the mid-point of the circular curve deflecting
through 760 38’ is 96.1 ft. calculate the radius of the curve.
