Joseph’s coat
Jacob showed his love for Joseph by giving him a special gift. In Genesis 37:3, the Hebrew
word for coat or tunic is “ketonet passim,” which means “tunic of distinction,” or a “long robe
with sleeves.” Some Bible scholars suggest it differed from the coats of Joseph’s brothers
because it had long sleeves, whereas the brothers would have worn the typical “working
man” sleeveless tunic. Just as supervisors and managers are marked out today by the fact
they wear suits, perhaps Joseph was set apart by his long-sleeved coat?

We know that the coat Jacob gave him was regarded as evidence of Jacob’s greater love
for Joseph above his other sons. It was a symbol of the authority over his brothers. Jacob’s
preference for Joseph was no secret (Genesis 37:2-3). But Joseph’s brothers hated this
garment and what it symbolized. When they met Joseph at Shechem, the first thing they did
was to strip his coat from him (Genesis 37:23). Perhaps Joseph was rejected by his brothers
because of the authority he had over them, even though he was their younger brother.

1. What does “ketonet passim” mean?

2. Why do you think Joseph’s brothers hated him?

Jacob’s wives and children
According to the Bible, Jacob had two wives; Leah and Rachel (who were sisters), and
two concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah. Rachel and Leah did not object to the other women
because it was their idea for Jacob to have more children with them (Genesis 30:3,9).

These four women had twelve sons between them. The sons of Leah were Reuben the
firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. The sons of Rachel were
Joseph and Benjamin. The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali,
and the sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah were Gad and Asher (Genesis 35:23-26).
Jacob had at least one daughter, Dinah. There is little doubt that both Bilhah
and Zilpah had a lower status than Leah and Rachel; the former were
concubines, while Leah and Rachel were full-fledged wives.

Design your own silver coin
To the ancient Israelites, ‘money’ meant gold, silver, and barley.
Joseph’s brothers sold him to the traders for 20 pieces of silver. Silver was popular because
it was more durable than grain. When someone purchased an item, their silver was weighed
and checked for purity. Silver was used for trade and transactions while gold was a way to
preserve wealth. Design your own silver coin in the space below. Use your imagination!

Captain of the Guard
At the time of Joseph, Potiphar was one of Pharaoh’s officials and Captain of the Guard. He
was responsible for Pharaoh’s security, and oversaw the royal prison where people sentenced
to imprisonment by Pharaoh or an official were imprisoned. As Captain of the Guard, he was
amongst Pharaoh’s most trusted officials and was given high authority over the land of Egypt.
Potiphar purchased Joseph as a slave from the Midianite traders. When Potiphar saw Joseph was
blessed and successful at everything he did, he put him in charge of his entire property. While
Joseph worked for Potiphar, Potiphar was blessed in his house and in his fields (Genesis 39:5).
Potiphar’s wife eventually noticed that Joseph was handsome. She attempted to seduce him,
but Joseph refused her advances many times. One day, she caught him by the garment and
tried to seduce him again. But Joseph refused and fled the house. When Potiphar arrived home,
she told him that Joseph had attempted to sleep with her. Potiphar believed his wife and
had Joseph thrown into the royal prison. However, Joseph flourished in prison and
the manager eventually gave Joseph authority over the other prisoners.

Pharaoh, king of Egypt
Pharaohs were the kings of ancient Egypt, and the high priests of all temples. They were
considered the leaders of government and religion. Their job was to take care of the
people. They lived in large palace complexes that included temples for worshipping
the gods, and buildings designed to house the headquarters of power. Palace buildings
were made from mud and sun-dried brick, while temples were made from stone. These
complexes included storerooms, homes, gardens and pieces of art. Because the palace
complex was always busy, its main buildings were generally safe. However, valuable items
from the temples were often taken, including its stones.
Each palace had a window used for public appearances. A Pharaoh would appear at this
window for ceremonies, and to welcome foreign visitors. When a new pharaoh came to
power, they sometimes built a new palace complex for themselves - it was up to them.
Because they owned everything in Egypt so they could do whatever they pleased.
Every piece of land, house, animal, jewelry, statue, person, clothing, temple,
store house, and tomb belonged to a Pharaoh.

Ancient Egyptian dreams
This article explains the importance of dreams to the ancient Egyptians.
Read the text and answer the questions on the next page.

Dreams
In ancient Egypt, dreams were considered divine predictions of the future. The Egyptians used
their dreams to cure illnesses, make important decisions, and even to decide where to build a
temple or when to fight a battle. Dreams were messages from the gods that foretold disasters or
good fortune. For example, a deep well represented prison, a shining moon meant forgiveness,
and a large cat symbolized a bumper crop.

The Egyptians often asked priests, magicians or professional dream interpreters to help them
understand their dreams. But these interpreters didn’t always agree, and similar dreams were
sometimes given different meanings. The Egyptians were so interested in the meaning of their
dreams they even had temples like the Temple of Horus in Edfu, where they would lie in ‘dream
beds’ and hope to have a dream about advice, comfort or healing.

Many dreams were recorded on pieces of papyrus known as ‘dream books’. From these books we
know that some common images included breaking stones, teeth falling out, drowning in the
Nile, drinking warm beer, and eating white bread. One of these dream books was discovered in
the village of Deir el-Medina, near the Valley of the Kings. It contained a list of dreams describing
activities such as pounding, brewing, weaving, sightseeing, stirring, and plastering. These dream
records show the importance Egyptians placed on dreams. No wonder Pharaoh was pleased
when Joseph explained his two dreams!

Food in Canaan
Famine is a situation where people don’t have enough food to eat. In the land of Canaan, famine was not
unusual. The Hebrews often experienced famines that could last for many years (Genesis 12:10, 41:27
and Jeremiah 14:1-6). During famines, people were so hungry they often ate things like wild vines, animal
heads, garbage, and animal dung.
The Hebrews worked hard to grow food to feed their large families. They used items like hoes, mattocks, and
plows (pulled by oxen or donkeys) to break up the soil and plant crops. Grain was then sown in the ploughed
fields. Planting took place in late fall and harvest in early summer, and involved the entire community. The
main crops were wheat, barley, legumes, figs, grapes and olives.

Did Joseph build a canal?
Did you know there are still signs of Joseph’s influence in the land of Egypt? For
example, the oasis town of Medinet-el-Faiyum, situated 80 miles south of Cairo,
is surrounded by lush gardens due to an ancient canal called Bahr Yusuf.
In Arabic, ‘Bahr Yusuf’ roughly translates as ‘the waterway of Joseph’.

An American engineer named Francis Cope Whitehouse discovered ‘Bahr Yusuf’ in

the late 19th century while investigating the source-water for a small freshwater
lake (Lake Qarun). He discovered the ruins of ancient dams, ditches, and aqueducts,
and a canal system that paralleled the Nile River for several hundred kilometers.
The engineer also came across evidence that the great depression of el-Faiyum was
converted into an artificial lake from which stored water was fed to the Nile in lean
years. Local legends attribute the lake’s construction to Joseph. Click here to learn

A special meal
“They served Joseph by himself and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate
with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for
that is an abomination to the Egyptians… Portions were taken to the brothers from
Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times more than any of theirs.”
(Genesis 43:31-34)

Joseph invited his brothers to a meal. What food do you think Joseph and his brothers ate?
The ancient Egyptians loved to eat garlic, along with green vegetables, lentils,
figs, dates, onions, fish, birds, eggs, cheese, and butter. Bread was sweetened with
dates, honey, figs or dates, and made with barley and wheat. Beer was the most common
drink in ancient Egypt. Fish was eaten after being roasted, or dried and salted.

Twelve tribes of Israel
The twelve tribes of Israel were named after sons or grandsons of Jacob (Israel). Jacob and
Leah had six sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulon. Leah’s maidservant
Zilpah bore Gad and Asher, and Rachel (Jacob’s second wife) had two sons, Joseph and
Benjamin. Rachel’s maidservant had two sons; Dan and Naphtali. While no tribe was named
after Joseph, two “half tribes” were named after Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Read
Deuteronomy 27:12-13. Write the names of the twelve tribes of Israel in the rocks below.

Joseph’s tomb discovered?
Have archaeologists found Joseph’s tomb in Egypt? Recent excavations of Tel el-Daba,
located in the Nile Delta area and referred to in the Bible as the land of Goshen revealed it to
be the ancient city of Avaris. It’s here that archaeologists discovered a large Egyptian-style
palace with a garden and cemetery, containing a number of tombs. The largest tomb (built
in the shape of a pyramid) had a single chamber with a small chapel in front of it. It had been
robbed but archaeologists found a damaged statue. The statue had been smashed, but
enough of it was found to piece together a possible identification.

The statue was that of an important official in the Egyptian government. The skin was
yellow, the traditional color of male Asiatics in Egyptian art. It had a mushroom-shaped
hairstyle, painted red, typical of that shown in Egyptian artwork for Asiatics, and the statue
was clean-shaven and wore a coat of many colors. A throwstick, the Egyptian hieroglyph for
a foreigner, was held against the right shoulder. This man must have been a Canaanite of
some kind, and an important official in the Egyptian government.
