Read Genesis 37:1-11. Answer the questions below.
What did the brothers do when they saw that Jacob loved
Joseph more than them?
We know that the coat Jacob gave him was regarded as evidence of Jacob’s greater love
for Joseph above his other sons. It was a symbol of the authority over his brothers. Jacob’s
preference for Joseph was no secret (Genesis 37:2-3). But Joseph’s brothers hated this
garment and what it symbolized. When they met Joseph at Shechem, the first thing they did
was to strip his coat from him (Genesis 37:23). Perhaps Joseph was rejected by his brothers
because of the authority he had over them, even though he was their younger brother.

Jacob’s wives and children
According to the Bible, Jacob had two wives; Leah and Rachel (who were sisters), and
two concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah. Rachel and Leah did not object to the other women
because it was their idea for Jacob to have more children with them (Genesis 30:3,9).
These four women had twelve sons between them. The sons of Leah were Reuben the
firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. The sons of Rachel were
Joseph and Benjamin. The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali,
and the sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah were Gad and Asher (Genesis 35:23-26).
Jacob had at least one daughter, Dinah. There is little doubt that both Bilhah
and Zilpah had a lower status than Leah and Rachel; the former were
concubines, while Leah and Rachel were full-fledged wives.

Dreams
In ancient Egypt, dreams were considered divine predictions of the future. The Egyptians used
their dreams to cure illnesses, make important decisions, and even to decide where to build a
temple or when to fight a battle. Dreams were messages from the gods that foretold disasters or
good fortune. For example, a deep well represented prison, a shining moon meant forgiveness,
and a large cat symbolized a bumper crop.
The Egyptians often asked priests, magicians or professional dream interpreters to help them
understand their dreams. But these interpreters didn’t always agree, and similar dreams were
sometimes given different meanings. The Egyptians were so interested in the meaning of their
dreams they even had temples like the Temple of Horus in Edfu, where they would lie in ‘dream
beds’ and hope to have a dream about advice, comfort or healing.
Many dreams were recorded on pieces of papyrus known as ‘dream books’. From these books we
know that some common images included breaking stones, teeth falling out, drowning in the
Nile, drinking warm beer, and eating white bread. One of these dream books was discovered in
the village of Deir el-Medina, near the Valley of the Kings. It contained a list of dreams describing
activities such as pounding, brewing, weaving, sightseeing, stirring, and plastering. These dream
records show the importance Egyptians placed on dreams. No wonder Pharaoh was pleased
when Joseph explained his two dreams!

Joseph invited his brothers to a meal. What food do you think Joseph and his brothers ate?
The ancient Egyptians loved to eat garlic, along with green vegetables, lentils,
figs, dates, onions, fish, birds, eggs, cheese, and butter. Bread was sweetened with
