FACE-TO-FACE COMMUNICATION
Some people want to meet each other in person to communicate, while others want to
telephone instead of making face-to-face communication. In my opinion, I prefer face-to-
face communication to telephone communication.
First of all, we can understand each other's feelings. In-person meetings provide the
opportunity to observe non-verbal signs, such as facial expressions, body language, and tone
of voice, which can convey emotions and intentions more effectively than words alone. This
ability to perceive and interpret the emotional context of a conversation allows individuals
to respond more empathetic and be more supportive of each other. Furthermore, face-to-face
communication can help to build trust and create a safe space for the open sharing of
emotions, leading to more meaningful and satisfying relationships. In contrast, telephone
conversations may lack the visual signs necessary for fully understanding the emotions of a
conversation, making it more difficult to develop a deep understanding of each other's
feelings. Therefore, face-to-face communication plays an essential role in building
emotional understanding and forming close connections between individuals. For instance,
during the COVID-19 pandemic, my best friend and I experienced a misunderstanding
during a phone conversation. The lack of direct expression of emotions and body language
made it difficult for us to truly understand each other's feelings and intentions. However,
once the pandemic restrictions were lifted, we were able to meet in person and discuss the
situation more clearly. Through face-to-face communication, we could better convey our
emotions and opinions, resolving the misunderstanding. This example highlights the
significance of in-person interactions in building a deeper understanding of each other's
feelings and enabling more effective communication.
Second, we can easily say what we want to say. In-person meetings allow for immediate
feedback and clarification, enabling individuals to adjust what they want to say in real-time
to ensure clear understanding. This dynamic exchange promotes effective communication
because it reduces the possibility of misunderstandings or misinterpretations. Moreover,
body language, such as facial expressions and gestures, can provide additional context and
emotion to our words, allowing for a more accurate delivery of our intentions. In contrast,
telephone conversations may have miscommunication because they lack these vital signs.
Furthermore, when we talk face-to-face, we can express our feelings and opinions
comfortably without worrying about our Internet connection or running out of phone
battery. On the other hand, talking on the phone is difficult for us to express with only
words, so we may misunderstand each other. Sometimes, our calls are interrupted at the
moment we are saying something important because of weak signals. Therefore, face-to-
face communication allows for a more effective exchange of ideas and emotions, making it
easier to say what we truly want to convey. For instance, during a month-long business trip,
I only relied on telephone communication to stay in touch with my girlfriend. I wanted to
share with her the details of my experiences and daily life, but I encountered difficulties due
to having a poor phone signal. As a result, I was unable to tell the full extent of my stories,

which would have been more easily communicated through face-to-face interaction. This
example demonstrates the limitations of telephone conversations and the value of in-person
communication for effectively expressing our thoughts and feelings.
Finally, we can impress other people. When we communicate with other people in person,
we can present ourselves more by showing our personality, behavior, and interpersonal
skills. Our appearance, body language, and facial expressions will contribute to the way we
are perceived, allowing us to create a more memorable and impactful impression. In
contrast, telephone conversations do not provide the same level of personal impression and
may make it more challenging to leave a lasting impression on others because we rely only
on our voice and choice of words. Face-to-face communication enables us to present
ourselves more effectively and make a powerful impact on those we interact with, creating
opportunities for personal and professional growth. For instance, my aunt, who frequently
conducts interviews, has expressed her preference for in-person communication with
candidates over telephone interviews. By meeting the candidates face-to-face, she can
observe their body language and overall behavior, which allows her to gain a more
throughout understanding of their attitude and professionalism. This example highlights the
value of face-to-face interactions in evaluating and forming impressions of others,
particularly in professional environments.
TELEPHONE
Some people want to meet each other in person to communicate. Others want to telephone
instead of making face-to-face communication. In my opinion, I prefer telephone
communication to face-to-face communication.
First of all, it is more convenient. The ability to communicate via telephone anytime and
anywhere is a significant advantage over face-to-face interactions. There is no need to spend
time traveling to meeting places because all it takes is picking up our phones, dialing a
number, and speaking to others within seconds. Furthermore, modern technology has made
phones smaller, lighter, and equipped with video calling capabilities, which enable us to see
each other while talking. This creates a sense of meeting in person, even though we are only
virtually connected. Furthermore, we can establish connections with numerous individuals
without the need for physical visits. In emergencies, a phone call is often the most efficient
method of communication because it does not require any prior planning or travel
arrangements. In contrast, face-to-face communication demands careful consideration of
when and where to meet, often involving time-consuming travel. For instance, a close friend
of mine at university lived a considerable distance from her parents. Due to her hometown
being far from Ho Chi Minh City, meeting them in person frequently is not possible.
Instead, she relied on telephone calls to stay in touch and maintain their close relationship.
The convenience of telephoning relieved her homesickness significantly, allowing her to
feel connected to her loved ones despite the distance between them.
Second, we can save money. The most significant and obvious benefit of using the phone in
communication is getting messages across quickly in the cheapest way. Information can be
transferred in just a few minutes without meeting each other and spending a lot of money
because our phones use radio waves to communicate and the fees are cheap. Nowadays, free
applications for telephoning are increasingly common. Besides direct telephoning, we can
use free applications, such as Messenger, Zalo, Skype, etc., to communicate with each other.
Talking to each other through applications may be less expensive than meeting in person.
On the other hand, face-to-face communication means that we have to spend money on
traveling, outfits, food, and drinks. Money spent on these things for only one meeting or
date can be higher than one spent on telephoning. For instance, I have a best friend who
lives 30 kilometers away from me. Whenever we plan to meet up, we usually choose a cafe
or restaurant as our meeting place. As a result, each of us typically spends around $20 per
meeting. However, since we switched to telephoning as our primary method of
communication, we have saved a significant amount of money while still maintaining our
close connection.
Last but not least, telephone communication is safer. Telephone conversations allow
individuals to interact with others without exposing themselves to potentially dangerous
situations, such as meeting unfamiliar people or having a traffic accident while traveling to
Prepared by Ngô Tấn Hoàng Khoa TN Trâm TOEIC - IELTS
the meeting place. Furthermore, during contagious disease outbreaks, like the COVID-19
pandemic, telephone communication reduces the risk of spreading disease by eliminating
physical contact. This communication method also provides privacy and anonymity,
enabling individuals to engage in conversations without revealing their location or personal
information, protecting themselves from potential harm. Moreover, telephone
communication can offer emotional safety because it allows for more comfortable and
controlled interactions in situations where face-to-face encounters may cause stress or
discomfort. Therefore, the safety benefits of telephone communication make it an attractive
choice for staying connected in today's world. For example, during the three-month social
distancing period in Ho Chi Minh City, I only communicated with others via phone. This
method helped protect me from potential exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast,
my best friend contracted COVID-19 after meeting with a client who did not know they
were infected. This experience emphasizes the importance of choosing telephone
communication to ensure personal safety.
In conclusion, it is more convenient and safer for us to telephone. Moreover, we can save a
lot of money when we telephone. Therefore, I prefer telephoning to meeting each other in
person. I encourage everyone to make telephone calls.
