Course Description
English Academic Paper Writing is a course intended to teach students about the structure of an academic research
paper and how to write one of their own. This course will teach students about the different parts of an
academic paper, the process of writing a paper, and the important skills needed for good academic writing.
This course will incorporate the use of the writer’s workshop format so that students are able to apply what
they learn in practice. The assignments in this course are also designed, with the same purpose, so that students
can gain more practical experience of the theoretical knowledge learned in class.
Teaching Objectives
At the completion of the course students will be able to identify and define the characteristics of an academic
research paper. Students will also be able to explain the structure of a research paper and produce different
parts of the paper as needed. Finally, students will develop the skills needed to write and construct their own
research papers.
Course Policies
As this is an English course, the working language of the course (and also the classroom) is English. Students
should use English when communicating with the teacher. Also, assignments are to be handed in on time
as required. If not, 5% will be deducted each day for late submission.
Attendance Policy
Since attendance represents 10 percent of your grade and we meet only once a week, attendance is mandatory.
You can’t learn to be a better writer if you aren’t present and active in class. Please inform me if you do miss a
class due to an emergency or serious illness.
