The king pin was put onto the open lock. trailer was adjusted too high for the tractor. By the
force of the imposed load the king pin has deformed the lock jaw and the lock is jamming.

Cause of Fifth Wheel Damage

Uneven Road:
The 5th wheel can only turn front and rear. So there are high forces between Fifth wheel plate
and trailer plate when the vehicle is driving an uneven bent. When the trailer is lower than
the tractor, the effect occurs in every bent.
Cause of Fifth Wheel Damage

Uneven/ weak Trailer Plate

A weak or uneven trailer plate causes deformations or crack on the
fifth wheel, which may lead to fatigue breaks.
Cause of Fifth Wheel Damage

Wear by overloading on sides

Trailer Plate
- a good trailer plate should even or not be more than
Worn-out Trailer Plate pressing

- Vehicle XB9728E was coupled to a trailer that is badly and thus handle cannot be pull out

Deformation by high temperature

The slide washers enlarge,

when they are heated by the sun. It
is possible, that it deforms in the
center. The deformation vanishs,
when a trailer is coupled. This has
no influence on the function .
Fifth Wheel Low Maintenance

Damaged by sharp edge at the trailer plate

Coupling and Uncoupling Procedures

COUPLING PROCEDURE
A. Inspect the Fifth Wheel
1. The ramps must be tilted down (see figure 1)
2. The locks must be opened.
3. The fifth wheel must be lubricated

B. Prepare the Trailer

1. Back up close to trailer centering kingpin on
fifth wheel.
2. Block trailer wheels.
3. Connect air lines and light cord.
4. Set trailer brakes.
5. Adjust the trailer height (if require). The
trailer should contact the fifth wheel approx.
6” behind pivot.

IMPORTANT! When Coupling, the fifth wheel must pick up the trailer (see figure 1)
Coupling and Uncoupling Procedures
Attempting to Couple at the wrong height may cause improper
coupling, which could result in damage or personal injury!

C. Couple Trailer
1. Back under trailer
2. After picking up trailer, STOP (stopping prevents hitting the kingpin
too hard).
3. Continue backing until fifth wheel locks
4. Pull forward to test the coupling as an initial check.

0 - 50 mm
Coupling and Uncoupling Procedures
Attempting to Couple at the wrong height may cause improper
coupling, which could result in damage or personal injury!

D. Visual Inspection
1. Check that there is NO GAP between the trailer bolster and the fifth wheel (see
figure 2)
2. Check that the KINGPIN is INSIDE the LOCK (see figure 2)
3. Check that the release HANDLE is INSIDE the NARROW SLOT (see figure 3)

Locking mechanism
The king pin locking mechanism should have a
longitudinal play of at least 0.3mm
The adjustment of the locking mechanism has to be
carried out with a properly dimensioned kingpin (total
maximum wear 0.25mm as follows:
1. Loosen the lock nut (17) on adjuster bolt (18),
screw adjuster bolt out, then tap the operating
handle lightly so that the locking bar is all the way
in.
2. Screw adjuster bolt in until any play between the
levers is eliminated and the locking bar just starts
to move outward.
3. Screw adjuster bolt a further one turn in and
tighten the lock nut,
(1 turn means 0.3mm play)
