This document outlines an open-ended lab (OEL) for a chemical process optimization course. The objective of the OEL is to optimize the design of a chemical reactor for a specific reaction considering constraints and parameters. Students will develop a mathematical model of a reactor system using mass and energy balances and reaction kinetics, define an optimization problem in MATLAB, conduct a sensitivity analysis, run the optimization to find optimal design parameters, and analyze and visualize the results in a report. The OEL aims to enable students to solve complex optimization problems and derive valid conclusions to meet specified course learning outcomes.

The following characteristics of complex activity are targeted in this project of Chemical Process Optimization. No. CEA Attribute EA1 Range of resources EA5 Familiarity OEL Statement: Optimization of Reactor Design: Objective: To optimize the design of a chemical reactor for a specific reaction considering various constraints and parameters. Steps: Problem Definition: Choose a chemical reaction with known kinetics and design a reactor system for it. Define the objective function (e.g., maximize product yield, minimize cost) and constraints (e.g., volume, temperature, pressure, residence time). Model Development: Develop a mathematical model of the reactor system considering mass and energy balances, reaction kinetics, and any relevant physical properties. Implement these equations in MATLAB. Optimization Setup: Using MATLAB's optimization toolbox, define the optimization problem with appropriate constraints and bounds for variables like reactor volume, temperature, flow rate, etc. Select an appropriate optimization algorithm (e.g., fmincon, ga) based on the problem characteristics. Sensitivity Analysis: Conduct sensitivity analysis by varying parameters like initial concentrations, temperature, or flow rates to observe their effects on the objective function and constraints. Optimization and Analysis: Run the optimization algorithm in MATLAB to find the optimal design parameters. Analyze the results and compare different design scenarios (e.g., batch vs. continuous flow reactor, varying reactor sizes) to understand trade-offs and sensitivities. Visualization and Reporting: Visualize the optimized design parameters using plots or graphs to showcase the impact of changes. Prepare a report summarizing the methodology, results, and conclusions drawn from the optimization process.
