MALC 1.11.2.1 Release Notes
Table 1: Supported DSL modem firmware versions on MALC and Raptor 1.11.x devices
NEW FEATURES
CES over IP
CES over an IP network transports T1/E1 circuit data over an static IP routed
network between Zhone equipment endpoints and delivers the data to the
destination T1/E1 circuit.
These restrictions take effect after the first port-access profile has been
created.
By default, no port-access profiles are created, so telnet access is not
restricted. Up to 100 port-access profile entries can be created on a MALC.
Bridge intralinks
Intralink bridging forwards traffic with unknown MAC addresses to the
configured bridge interface without attempting to learn the addresses of the
attached devices or network. Incoming broadcast or multicast traffic received
on an uplink is forwarded to all intralinks. If the intralinks are designated with
VLAN IDs, the traffic is forwarded to the appropriate interface. Unicast
packets that can not be resolved locally are also forwarded on all intralinks.
A global intralink can also be defined, which receives all traffic that cannot be
resolved locally.
ADSL+POTS card
The 48-port ADSL+POTS card is available as ADSL+POTS-TDM-48-2S for
TDM processing and ADSL+POTS-TDM/PKT-48-2S for TDM and packet
processing. This card occupies two slots in the MALC chassis and provides
48 ports of integrated ADSL and POTS service. It supports the ANSI T1.413
Issue 2, G.992.1 (G.dmt) and G.992.2 (G.lite), G.992.3 and G.992.4 (ADSL2),
GigE-2 card
The MALC Uplink-2-GE card provides high-speed GigaBit Ethernet
interfaces for resilient packet ring (RPR) networks. They include the
following interfaces:
• One 10/100 Ethernet interface for management or data.
• Two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. These interfaces can be used for RPR or
high speed data applications. The interfaces support a number of small
form factor pluggables (SFPs) that enable the card to interface with a
variety of media types.
POTS-48 card
The new 48-port POTS card is available as POTS-TDM-48 for TDM
processing and POTS-TDM/PKT-48 for TDM and packet processing. This
card provides access to traditional 2-wire analog voice circuits using tone
dialing. It supports loop start and provides echo cancellation. The POTS card
communicates with the Uplink card over the MALC TDM and control bus.
Packet voice
Select POTS 48-port cards now support both TDM and packet voice
connections. Use the card line type in the card-profile to set the type of voice
connection. For packet voice, use a card line type of adsl-pots-pv or pots-pv.
For TDM voice, use a card line type of adsl-pots or pots.
The following 48 port cards support both TDM and packet voice:
• ADSL+POTS-TDM/PKT-48-2S
• POTS-TDM/PKT-48
atmping command
The atmping command now has parameters for F5 segment and end-to-end
loopbacks.
ces command
The ces add, show, and delete commands are now available for configuring
CES over IP connections.
ds3rpshow command
The ds3rpshow command shows the real-time status of the DS3 line
connections.
dslstat command
This release adds line uptime counter to the available DSL statistics
displayed with the dslstat command. It also adds Actual Transmission
connection standard to the ADSL physical statistics.
line-red command
The line-red command sets the redundancy behavior of Ethernet lines so
Ethernet uplink cards, such as MALC GigE-2 card, switchover from an active
to a standby card when the active link goes down. The standby card must be in
a running state for the switchover to occur.
mtac-linetest
A new mtac-linetest command is available to connect a third-party device to
the MALC MTAC card to set test relays. The default baud rate is 9600 bps.
RPR commands
The following new RPR commands display information about the resilient
packet ring (RPR) topology, status, configuration, and statistics.
• rpr show
• rpr show topo
• rpr show status
• rpr show config
• rpr show status
voicestat command
The voicestat command now supports subscriber endpoint data for:
• Incoming calls completed
• Incoming calls blocked
• Outgoing calls completed
• Outgoing calls blocked
• Active calls

Problems fixed
Problems fixed in 1.11.2.1
TR 30786 Modems sync up at low rates after replacing Gige uplink card.
TR 31963 All bridged links for Internet data stop functioning, while IP video continues
to function.
TR 32449 The bridge table does not update with the correct MAC address.
TR 32957 ATM PINGs in rapid succession cause the Uplink to switch over.
TR 33253 Uplink IMA group drops when resetting the card or provisioning cross
connects on 48-port uplink card.
TR 35488 When a call is made to a POTS to VOIP customer, the MALC customer gets
hears silence for 8 to 10 seconds before the voice-path is established. The
calling party hears the normal ringback.
TR 35503 When entering a list atm-vcl or a voice show command, the CPU usage raises
to 100%, causing the uplink to stop responding to telnet or ping requests.
Known issues
This section describes known issues in this release.
General
◊ When making an ISDN/V5.2 call, the AAL2 PVC breaks between Z-Edge
and MALC devices.
Workaround: Change the adminstatus of the if-translate for the MALC
DSL port to down and then up again.
◊ The atmping command does not work on the OC12 Uplink card.
◊ Setting the loopback parameter to localloop in the ds1-profile does not work
on the T1/E1-ATM-32 card.
◊ QRSS test pattern is sent regardless of send code pattern selected for DS1/E1
interfaces.
◊ IP interfaces created by the host add command are not deleted when a
BPON-SC-1 card is deleted. Manually, delete host before deleting this card.
◊ Sometimes, GigaBit Ethernet ports on the card in slot 2 in an RPR ring show
in a OOS state in the showline command when the ports are actually up.
◊ MALC POTS-24 and MTAC cards do not boot to running when the card
profiles are added in a RPR uplink system. These cards boot to running if a
slotreboot is issued to the slot.
◊ When voice add commands are used on either a POTS or voice gateway card
for VOIP, a 3 second pause between commands is required.
◊ When CES ports are set to looptiming, the clock timing may drift slowly over
time.
◊ If port status is changed to down, outstanding alarms are not cleared. When
the port is brought back up, the alarms are still displayed in the alarm show
output.
◊ Several error messages may be routinely seen across the cards at boot time
and other times, even though no errors occurred.
◊ Changing the admin status of a GR303 or V5.2 user port to down does not
bring down the call. The call remains active on the switch.
◊ MALC 319 chassis selftest command reports failure for FAIL SHELFME
EEPROM. However, the system is working properly.
◊ Option 82 is set incorrectly when the bridge is added from ZMS. It can be set
correctly using the CLI.
◊ The showline command does not support the PON card correctly.
◊ In RPR configurations, users may be unable to clear critical alarms and traps
sent for Ethernet ports.
ATM
◊ The default values for the atm-vcl-param profile are higher than the actual
line rates supported for various interfaces. For example, the effective
throughput of a OC3/STM1 card (without SDH overhead) is 149.76 Mbps
(353207 cps). The default value in the atm-vcl-param profile is 365567.
Refer to the MALC Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide for
information on changing these values.
◊ CBR traffic does not keep priority over UBR/nrtVBR/rtVBR when max rate
(5452) is sent across G.SHDSL ports.
Workaround: Using a sustained cell rate (SCR) of 5451 maintains the priority
of CBR traffic.
◊ ATM logical statistics on SONET uplink cards do not show correct values.
◊ IMA group failed after using the host delete command on T1/E1-ATM-32
card.
DSL
◊ If the SHDSL card derives timing from a redundant trunk or Uplink card,
SHDSL lines may retrain when the trunk or Uplink cards are switched.
IP
◊ Users may be unable to provision IP services from the CLI on PON ONUs
with active cell relay connections. Remove the VCL and re-add it using the
host add interface command.
Management
◊ SNMP timeouts occur while walking the MIB, which then causes console
error messages.
Workaround: Set your browser timeout to a larger value.
◊ When the syslog profile is set to display debug level messages, error level
messages are not included.
◊ When a MALC system is powered down or rebooted, both the critical and
major alarm relay contacts trigger alarms. This differs from the LED display,
which only shows a critical alarm.
◊ An IMA failure trap will not be sent to ZMS upon IMA interface failure.
◊ Shelf controller status will report that the fan is operational when the fan tray
is removed.
◊ On a MALC 319, the system may generate a message that all fans are not
working even if there is a problem with only a single fan. In addition, the
system only sends a trap when the first fan fails, subsequent fan failures do
not result in a trap being sent.
MTAC/Ring card
◊ The MTAC/Ring-FC card on the MALC 319 always reports the 2MHz clock
reference in the E1 other mode as active, regardless of the actual state on the
interface.
◊ The MTAC/Ring card generates unnecessary linkUp and linkDown traps for
the BHS interface on the card.
◊ “Local loop” loopback does not work on T1/E1 ATM and T1/E1 12 CES card
ports.
Redundancy
◊ The single port GigE card does not function properly in redundant mode.
Statistics
◊ The system reports that DS1 and IMA links were up for 30 seconds before T1/
E1-ATM-32 card is running.
◊ The ATM statistics on the T1/E1-ATM-32 IMA card display incorrect cell
counts.
Voice
◊ The ULC card does not send ISDN D-channel LinkUp/LinkDown messages
to the console port even if trap messages are enabled.
◊ When provisioning a voice connection, use the line group ID of the Uplink
side of the connection. Although the system will accept a voice connection
using the line group ID of the subscriber-side interface, ZMS config sync will
fail unless the line group ID is from the Uplink side of the connection.
◊ Zhone does not recommend exceeding 120 AAL2-only concurrent voice calls
on the MALC.
◊ No VOIP fast-busy tone is available when the Ethernet link and path are
down.
◊ When creating subscribers with CLI, there is no warning that a CID is already
in use. For example, after configuring a subscriber, the system allows you to
create a second subscriber-voice profile, a GR303 profile with a new CRV,
and an AAL2 profile with the same information as the first AAL2 profile
(linegroup/vpi/vci/cid). The system allows this configuration to be created,
but moves voice service from the first profile to the second profile. There is
no error message that CID is already in use.
◊ For ISDN connections, the voice add command does not set aal2 vcl or cids
correctly. Manually update the aal2-vcl-profile and aal2-cid-profile to
complete the configuration.
◊ In systems using the voice gateway card, the aal2proxy vcl atmping does not
function properly.
◊ For systems using the voice gateway card, the aal2proxy oper status MIB is
not working. This causes ZMS errors, but functions properly.
◊ Updates to the sip-expires-timer-cfg parameter does not take effect until the
next reboot.
◊ MALC POTS VOIP users hear silence instead of a busy tone when they call
themselves.
◊ Calling party gets secondary dialtone when a held party attempts to flash to a
call.
◊ Provisioning a ISDN user with a V5.2 user port higher than 1599 is not
allowed.
◊ When issuing the atmvcl command on the voice gateway card, the switched
VPs always shows an inactive state, even when they are actually working.
◊ Single port GigE card does not support SIP/PLAR VOIP connections.
◊ After a system reboot, a system with ULC cards may display CCRP error
messages. These messages are harmless and can be ignored.
◊ After deleting an ADSL 32 card, the system displays a large number of errors.
These error messages are harmless and do not affect functionality.
◊ The error message “sendto failed 65” may be displayed on the console and
when the system boots. This message is harmless.
◊ Harmless DHCP server error messages may appear when using the host add
command.
◊ When adding voice connections using the voice add command for the voice
gateway, a harmless duplicate ELCP port error message may appear.
Upgrading software
This section explains how to upgrade the MALC software.

splitter)
5 If desired, save the existing software images on the flash card by copying
them to a different file name. For example:
zSH> copy malcpots.bin malcpots.bin.sav
Copy the rest of the software images in the same way.
6 Download the latest system image software for the Uplink cards to the
system flash using the image command. The files you download depend
on the type of Uplink interface. Only download one set of files for the
Uplink card. The command uses the following syntax:
image download TFTPserverAddress sourcefilename [destinationfilename]
GE-2 Uplink
zSH> image download TFTPserverAddress malcrprgige.bin
zSH> image download TFTPserverAddress malcrprgigeraw.bin
UP-O12/S4/GE/TDM-ATM/IP Uplink:
zSH> image download TFTPserverAddress malcoc12.bin
zSH> image download TFTPserverAddress malcoc12raw.bin

zSH> image flash malcgigeraw.bin 1 all
9 Use the set2default command to erase the system configuration:
zSH>set2default
Ok to reset to default (system will reboot) ? [yes] or
[no]: yes
During the reboot, the system will look for the file named restore in the
onreboot directory, then use that file to recreate the configuration files in
the datastor directory. After the restore is finished, it renames the restore
file to restore.done.
The system reboots again with the new configuration.
Downgrading a system
To downgrade the system software:
1 Verify that you are at the root of the flash card:
zSH> cd /card1
zSH> pwd
/card1
3 Download the old system image software for each slot card installed in
the system using the image command. The command uses the following
syntax:
image download TFTPserverAddress sourcefilename [destinationfilename]
For example:
zSH> image download TFTPserverAddress malcxdsl48.bin
4 Initialize the flash card’s boot partition with the new image on both the
primary and standby Uplink card (if present):
DS3/E3 ATM/IP Uplink:
zSH> image flash malcds3fraw.bin 1 all
GE-2 Uplink:
zSH> image flash malcrprgige.bin 1 all
T1/E1 ATM/IP Uplink:
zSH> image flash malct1imafraw.bin 1 all
T1/E1 ATM/TDM Uplink:
zSH> image flash malct1e1tdmraw.bin 1 all
GE-2 Uplink:
zSH> image flash malcrprgige.bin 1 all
OC12/S4/GE/TDM-ATM/IP Uplink:
zSH> image flash malcoc12raw.bin 1 all
OC12/S4/GE/TDM-ATM/IP HP Uplink:
zSH> image flash malcgigeraw.bin 1 all
Note: Be sure to initialize each Uplink card in the system you are
reverting back to.
During the reboot, the system will look for the file named restore in the
onreboot directory, then use that file to recreate the configuration files in
the datastor directory. After the restore is finished, it renames the restore
file to restore.done.
4 Copy the previously saved dump file to the onreboot directory and
rename it restore:
zSH>file download 192.168.2.89 dumpfilename onreboot/
restore
where 192.168.2.89 is the hostname the restore file was saved to and
dumpfilename is the name of the restore file.
5 Use the set2default command to erase the system configuration:
zSH>set2default
Ok to reset to default (system will reboot) ? [yes] or
[no]: yes
During the reboot, the system will look for the file named restore in the
onreboot directory, then use that file to recreate the configuration files in the
datastor directory. After the restore is finished, it renames the restore file to
restore.done.
