Model Solution of Mini Test Section M1, ME 323

The document contains a mini test for a manufacturing processes subject. It includes 6 multiple choice questions related to topics like selecting cutting fluids, EDM processes, slab milling cutters, and chip formation. The questions assess understanding of key variables that impact machining operations and abilities to calculate relevant metrics like machining time and material removal rate. Responses require identifying appropriate assumptions, justifying answers, and showing calculations to demonstrate comprehension of underlying machining concepts.

MINI TEST (15.02.2024)
Subject: Mfg. Processes -2 Subject code: ME 323
Semester: VI & Section: M1 Time: 60 Min. Max. Marks: 50 on the scale of 10
Note: Mention the assumptions and missing data, if required.

Question Marks
Q.1: You have been given task to select the cutting fluid for a metal part to be 05
turned/machined on turning/milling. How would you do it?
Q.2: An EDM machine operator used the water collected from bathroom tap 05
as dielectric medium. What would happen to the process?
Q.3: Why helical teeth are preferred over straight teeth on slab milling cutter? 05
Q.4: A slab milling cutter having diameter D in meter & number of teeth as Z 05
is being used at a given cutting speed (m/min) and feed/tooth to mill a plain
surface of a job. How will you, mathematically, calculate the table speed?
Q.5: A slab-milling operation will take place on a part 300 mm long and 20
40 mm wide. A helical cutter 75 mm in diameter with 10 teeth will be
used. If the feed per tooth is 0.2 mm/tooth and the cutting speed is 0.75
m/s, find the machining time and metal-removal rate for removing 6
mm from the surface of the part.
Q.6: The different types of the chips are generated during machining 10
processes. During an analysis, would you consider them as a ‘dependent
variable’ or an ‘independent variable’? Justify your answer.

Solution
Q.1: Cutting fluid for a metal part to be turned/machined on turning/milling can be selected based on
following factors;

Q.2: If tap water is used as dielectric fluid during EDM, then the controlled and stable conditions for
ionization within the spark gap may not be maintained due to presence of salts as impurities which will
cause early ionization.
When an EDM machine is commissioned, deionized or distilled water with very low conductivity is initially used. Afterward, operators can use
tap water as long as it has been passed through a deionizing resin bottle where electrically charged particles are neutralized, and all
contaminants are filtered out. The deionized water is then passed through a 3-micron to 5-micron filter paper to remove any residual
particles/impurities.

Q.3: Helical teeth cutters are preferred in slab milling since while milling there will always multiple teeth
in contact with the surface to be machined and the transition in contact from one tooth to another will
be smooth and it will reduce impact loading & generation of vibrations or periodic forcing functions
from the cutting operation.

Q.4: Known parameters > Cutting speed & feed/ tooth

Thus, V =π D N m/min and Table feed or speed = feed/tooth × No. of teeth × N

Thus, Table feed or speed = feed/tooth × No. of teeth × N (put N = V/π D)

= ft × Z × V / π D in m/min
Q.5:

Q.6: The different types of the chips production will be taken as as a ‘dependent variable’ because
it will be dependent on some independent variables like work piece material, cutting parameters &
cutting fluids.
